Waterloo's AI and authorship rule

Waterloo says the applicant must complete the AIF. How Waterloo says the AIF is reviewed

Waterloo currently says trained human reviewers assess the form and an internal AI system is used alongside them. If the scores differ significantly, a second person reviews the submission. The AIF is not an Engineering-only form

Waterloo uses the common AIF for all Engineering programs except Architecture, all Faculty of Mathematics programs, Computing and Financial Management, Geography and Aviation, and Science and Aviation. Most other Arts, Environment, Health, and Science programs do not use it.

The common form does not replace faculty-specific requirements. Engineering and Math applicants receive a Supplementary Information Form, and Engineering applicants can receive interview and program-specific items.

Waterloo publishes university-level application and document dates, but the applicant portal lists the exact forms assigned to each choice. Complete the Declaration of Academic Experience promptly so the checklist can show the records and supplementary items Waterloo needs.

Applicants applying to both Engineering and Mathematics submit one AIF but should meet the earlier Engineering document deadline. A successful OUAC submission is not proof that Waterloo's forms are complete.

Specific evidence beats a generic activity list

Waterloo's prompts ask what you did, how you affected other people or a community, what you learned, and how your judgment changed. A job, family responsibility, independent project, long-term interest, or community role can provide stronger evidence than a title without action or reflection.

Use the word limit to prioritize one clear example and its meaning. Do not invent metrics, overstate leadership, or make every response a version of why Waterloo is prestigious.

Keep authorship with the applicant

Waterloo says another person or AI tool should not write the AIF. Support should focus on evidence discovery, prompt fit, clarity, accuracy, and final proofreading while preserving the applicant's experiences, reflection, wording, and decisions.
