Queen's Commerce vs Western Ivey
direct BCom or the AEO route?
Queen's Commerce begins a four-year business degree in first year. Ivey AEO gives conditional pre-admission to the HBA, which normally starts in university Year 3 after two years in another program. For Fall 2027, choose between early business immersion and that two-stage route. An AEO offer still has university progression conditions.

Choose when you want business study to begin
At Queen's, Commerce is your degree from the start. Smith describes the first two years as a foundation across business areas, followed by more elective choice. You can assess the first-year course list before accepting. That can suit you if you want business to anchor your timetable and academic community as soon as you arrive.
Ivey uses a different sequence. AEO means Advanced Entry Opportunity, not a separate undergraduate degree. You first study in a Western program and normally enter HBA1 in your third university year. Those first two years are real parts of your education. They aren't simply a waiting room for the business school.
Pick the first program on its own merits. Would you enjoy its courses and be willing to finish it if your HBA plan changed? That question makes the AEO choice more concrete. A student who wants business every term may prefer Smith's structure. Another may value studying a different subject before the concentrated HBA experience.

Separate an admission offer from later progression
AEO status carries university conditions. It does not remove the need to keep the required academic standing or complete the right courses. Ivey's current material describes the later review and the role of Business 2257. Read the handbook attached to your entry year before registering for courses. High school admission and HBA entry happen at different stages.
The current published progression rules are useful planning evidence, but a Fall 2027 entrant would usually reach HBA later. The handbook for that cohort must control its exact conditions. Don't assume an older science or engineering exception applies to you. If a timetable choice could affect eligibility, ask Ivey before relying on it.
Queen's has its own degree and academic rules after admission. The distinction isn't that one offer has conditions and the other has none. It is that the programs place the main business-degree entry decision at different points. Compare those points honestly. An impressive AEO label shouldn't hide a first program you wouldn't otherwise choose.

Read the published average as part of a whole file
Queen's calls its table a Competitive Average for Admission Consideration. Commerce shows 90+. The explanation says the figures are the minimum averages considered for September of last year, based on prerequisite courses. It warns that they can be higher in another year. The table doesn't name the cohort year, so we retain the relative label.
Ivey says a competitive AEO application includes a low 90% average in the relevant Grade 12 course set, including English. It evaluates academics and leadership equally. That is a profile description, not a fixed minimum that guarantees an offer. It also cannot be compared directly with Queen's prior-year consideration figure as if both measured the same thing.
If your marks are a few points below either description, check course eligibility and what can still improve. Keep a business option you'd accept without a special exception. Do not attach a made-up probability to a stronger reference or activity. The official pages provide criteria; they do not offer a calculator for your individual admission chances.

Check your maths plan for both routes
Queen's Ontario Commerce requirements name English, Calculus and Vectors and another Grade 12 university-preparation maths course. Each of those three needs at least 80%. Your diploma and full six-course set still matter. Having a high average across electives doesn't cure a missing required subject or a mark below an individual course floor.
Ivey's secondary-school guidance asks for a Grade 12 university-preparation maths course. Your first Western program can require more. A Science or Engineering choice does not inherit the smaller Ivey list. Work backwards from both the first degree and the later HBA route when you choose Grade 12 subjects. Keep recommended courses distinct from required ones.
Use the Queen's Commerce requirements guide for the full Ontario set. The Ivey HBA admission guide explains the two-stage route. If a course change would shut one option, settle that before you drop it. An early timetable check is more useful than discovering the issue after your school has sent marks.

Compare the actual supplement instructions
Both routes look beyond marks, but their extra applications are different. Ivey's AEO material asks for leadership evidence and verifiable references, with a video component. Queen's requires a Commerce supplement. Do not submit one generic set of materials to both and assume every attachment or activity field is accepted.
Queen's format FAQ still says it applies to 2026 intakes and promises updated 2027 information by November 1, 2026. Some deadline answers on that same page retain 2024 dates. Smith's dated 2027 admission calendar supplies the current February 15 supplement deadline. The final new-cycle format should remain pending until Queen's updates it.
You write and submit your own answers. Queen's authorship rule should not be expanded into an invented ban on all feedback. Ivey's listed references must be able to verify the activities you name. Our Queen's supplement guide and AEO application guide keep those item-specific instructions with their sources.

Compare internships without assuming either has co-op
Ivey's FAQ says it does not offer a co-op program and instead describes summer internships. Career support is part of its program, but an employer still chooses whom to hire. Some outcome figures on the FAQ refer to old graduating classes. They shouldn't become a salary prediction or a job guarantee for a Fall 2027 high school applicant.
Smith's career-support page describes recruiting support for Commerce students. Its published curriculum is a four-year business degree, rather than a mandatory alternating work-term program. Ask about the opportunities that fit your interests and when you can access them. An optional internship, exchange or recruiting event is not the same thing as a required co-op term.
Consider how you would use the summer between academic years. You may want paid work near home, a role elsewhere or time for another responsibility. Keep those needs in the comparison. A business school's employer network can support a search, but it does not remove the work of finding, applying for and succeeding in a position.

Budget the whole sequence instead of one fee
Queen's lists 2026-27 Ontario Commerce tuition of $16,613.19 for thirty-three units in each of the first two years. Its upper-year load and fee basis differ. Student charges are separate. The Queen's cost guide explains those categories so that a first-year figure isn't silently repeated for every year.
Ivey's current 2026-27 HBA page lists $25,704 in Ontario tuition for each HBA year. It explicitly sends first- and second-year students to their own Western program's fee schedule. An AEO applicant isn't charged HBA tuition from the first day of university. Conversely, a low first-program fee doesn't represent the later HBA years.
For Fall 2027 entry, the exact later HBA-year price is still a future unknown. Build a reference budget with the published cycle clearly labelled, then update it when approved schedules appear. Add living costs and travel. Read the Western cost guide and the relevant aid pages before counting an award as money available for a deposit.

Build a shortlist that works if the preferred route changes
A student drawn to Ivey's concentrated case-based study should also like the first Western program. A student drawn to Queen's business immersion should examine the non-Commerce electives and later choices, too. Compare a typical week of required study at each stage. A general claim about reputation won't tell you which structure you'd enjoy.
Then compare the complete offers. An ordinary Western offer is not an AEO offer. AEO is not unconditional HBA entry. Queen's Commerce is distinct from other Queen's degrees. Keep the Queen's hub and Western hub handy for residence and support links, and read each school's own acceptance-data explanation for statistical context.
Put Ivey's January 15, 2027 AEO deadline and Queen's February 1 application and February 15 supplement deadlines in separate entries. A recommendation to apply early for an award is another task. Before paying a housing deposit, compare the academic conditions, total cost and alternative you would choose if the plan changed. That is a decision you can defend using the published rules.
