Confirmed Fall 2027 application timeline

Applying to both programs means tracking two faculty schedules. Waterloo allows up to three program selections but only one Engineering selection; Computer Science is in Mathematics, so the two can be selected together under the current rule.

A five-question decision check

A reliable choice still makes sense after removing prestige and salary assumptions. Read the official course sequences, then answer these questions from the mandatory curriculum.

  1. Do you want a regular-study option, or are you committed to co-op?
  2. Do Chemistry, Physics, circuits and prescribed Engineering design support your goals?
  3. Can you truthfully document programming, debugging and testing experience for SE?
  4. Would you use CS's added elective and specialization flexibility?
  5. Does Engineering accreditation matter to your intended professional path?

Choose the degree structure before comparing prestige

Computer Science is administered through the Faculty of Mathematics and emphasizes computing, algorithms, systems, mathematical foundations and elective breadth. Software Engineering is an accredited professional Engineering degree supported by the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Mathematics, with a prescribed Engineering sequence, natural science, digital circuits, design, professional practice and team-based software development.

The employment overlap is real: graduates from both programs can become software developers or software engineers. The better question is which required curriculum, workload, flexibility, co-op sequence, credential and application process fits you.

  • Choose Computer Science for greater computing and non-Math elective flexibility, regular or co-op choice, and no admission requirement for prior programming.
  • Choose Software Engineering for a prescribed co-op-only Engineering degree, structured design and professional-practice requirements, hardware exposure, and an accredited engineering pathway.
  • Do not choose Software Engineering because the title sounds more advanced; compare the official course requirements.

Compare the Ontario prerequisites course by course

Both programs calculate an admission average from six Grade 12 U or M courses, including every required course. Computer Science requires Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, a Grade 12 U English and one other Grade 12 U course. Software Engineering requires Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Chemistry, Physics and ENG4U, each with a minimum final grade of 70%, plus one additional 4U or 4M course.

Waterloo recommends Grade 11 U Introduction to Computer Science for CS but says prior coding is not required. Software Engineering requires programming experience from a course or self-study and evidence of interest in open-ended problem solving, debugging, testing and learning languages.

Treat the low-to-mid-90s range as evidence, not a cutoff

The current Waterloo pages list both programs as individual selection from the low to mid-90s. Waterloo explains that individual-selection programs use grades with supplementary forms or interviews and have no absolute admission cutoff. Applicant strength, capacity and the review process can change the effective threshold each year.

A 95% average does not guarantee admission, and a student should not reverse-engineer a fake acceptance probability from anonymous online results. Use the official range to build an ambitious, aligned and lower-risk program list.

Apply to both programs without merging their deadlines

Waterloo lets an applicant select up to three programs, but only one can be an Engineering program. Computer Science is a Mathematics program and Software Engineering is an Engineering program, so an applicant can select both while staying within those rules. Each program receives its own admission decision.

For Fall 2027, Software Engineering uses the Engineering schedule: January 15 to apply and February 1 for documents and required application components. Computer Science uses the schedule for programs outside Engineering: February 1 to apply and February 15 for documents. If you apply to both, use the earlier Engineering deadline for shared and Engineering-specific checklist items.

Complete one AIF plus the required faculty forms

Waterloo requires the AIF and a Supplementary Information Form for both Engineering and Mathematics applicants. The AIF is submitted once and used for every Waterloo program that requires it. The applicant portal can also assign faculty- and program-specific forms.

The current AIF page says trained people and an AI system review AIF responses, with a second human review when scores differ significantly. It also says applicants are responsible for truthful, original answers and that untrue, incorrect or plagiarized AI-generated content can lead to denial or withdrawal of an offer.

  • Inventory the last 12 months of work, family responsibilities, projects, service, clubs, interests and awards.
  • For each example, record the context, your action, a concrete result and a genuine reflection.
  • Explain repeated and non-day-school required courses in the faculty Supplementary Information Form.
  • Preview every portal form, save a copy before submitting, and verify the received status afterward.

Separate the general Engineering interview from the SE interview

All Engineering applicants see a general video interview. Waterloo's dedicated interview and AIF pages say it is optional for admission and required for Faculty of Engineering entrance-scholarship consideration. Software Engineering applicants receive a second, written program-specific interview that is required for admission.

Waterloo currently publishes the SE written prompt: list each programming language, months of actual use and the context in which it was used, within 150 words and five minutes. The general Engineering response asks what experiences motivated the chosen program, with a 90-second limit.

Waterloo's general Fall 2027 deadline page currently uses broader wording that calls online interviews required for all Engineering programs, while the dedicated interview page distinguishes the optional general interview from the required SE written response. The safest plan is to complete every interview listed in the applicant portal by the Engineering document deadline and follow any updated portal instruction.

Understand contests, repeats and course setting

For Computer Science, Waterloo strongly encourages the Canadian Computing Competition, Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest and Euclid Mathematics Contest. The current CS program page says these can enhance admission status, while the Engineering FAQ says contest scores are not used in Engineering applicant review; participation can still be discussed on the AIF.

Repeated-course treatment also differs. Waterloo says an Engineering applicant is not penalized for repeating a course and the highest grade is used. A Faculty of Mathematics applicant should avoid repeating a required Grade 12 course because it may reduce competitiveness. Both faculties may adjust the admission average when a required course is taken outside the regular day school or school board, subject to the published policy.

Compare regular study, co-op sequences and job-search risk

Computer Science is available as regular study or co-op. Its published sample co-op sequence starts after first year and contains five work terms over five years. Software Engineering is co-op only; the published sample sequence contains six work terms and a more prescribed academic calendar.

Waterloo says co-op students across programs complete four to six work terms, depending on the program, and that a job is not guaranteed. The current 2026–2027 co-op fee is $836 per school term in which it is charged. Current Canadian four-month earnings are published as $9,600 to $23,400, but these are not a promise and can change with the role, market, experience and location.

Compare curriculum flexibility, accreditation and tuition

The Computer Science degree supports BCS or BMath routes and optional specializations such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, business, computational fine arts, game design, human-computer interaction and software engineering, subject to current rules and capacity. Software Engineering follows a Bachelor of Software Engineering curriculum with required engineering science, design, professional development and complementary studies, plus its own specializations and Engineering options.

Software Engineering is an accredited professional Engineering degree; Computer Science is not an Engineering degree and does not need Engineering accreditation to prepare students for computing careers. Applicants who may pursue professional engineering licensure should verify the exact accreditation record and regulator requirements rather than infer them from a job title.

Waterloo's current first-year tuition page uses September 2026 estimates and places Mathematics and Software Engineering in different fee categories. Treat those figures as a comparison baseline only: retrieve the exact Computer Science regular or co-op and Software Engineering fees for the 2027 cohort when published, then add co-op charges, incidental fees, housing, travel and the fifth-year calendar.

Use a defensible CS-versus-SE decision test

Read the current first-year and upper-year requirements side by side. Mark every mandatory course you are excited to take, willing to take or would strongly prefer to avoid. Then compare elective space, hardware and science content, design and professional-practice requirements, co-op-only versus regular flexibility, program-transfer risk and total cost.

Apply to both only if you can explain why either degree genuinely fits. Waterloo Engineering is direct entry and says transferring between Engineering programs later is difficult and often impossible. Software Engineering is not available as an alternate Engineering choice, so it must be selected directly if it is the intended Engineering program.
