University of Waterloo programs and faculties

Choose a Waterloo program by its actual entry route, degree, curriculum, co-op structure, and later major rules—not by a broad faculty label or reputation alone. This guide was reviewed August 13, 2026 against the current Waterloo program directory, admissions, faculty, co-op, and individual program pages linked below.

Six faculties

Waterloo organizes undergraduate study through Arts, Engineering, Environment, Health, Mathematics, and Science. The School of Accounting and Finance spans specialized programs associated with Arts, Science, and Environment.

Up to three choices

An applicant may select up to three Waterloo programs and receives a separate decision for each. Only one Engineering program can be selected on the application; Engineering has a separate alternate-choice process with restrictions.

Entry program versus later major

Some applicants choose a named program immediately, while broader entries can contain multiple majors selected or confirmed later. The official program page—not a faculty label alone—shows the degree, entry route, co-op availability, prerequisites, and supplementary review.

Co-op is program-specific

Waterloo offers regular, co-op, and co-op-only routes depending on the program. Applicants normally apply directly to co-op where it is offered, and space to switch into co-op after first year is very limited.

How Waterloo program selection works

Waterloo's current admission FAQ allows up to three program selections and gives a separate decision for each. Ranking Waterloo higher or lower does not change its review. Engineering is the main exception: an applicant selects one Engineering program on the application and can later identify an alternate through the Engineering form, subject to availability and restrictions.

A program name can describe a direct-entry degree, a broader entry that contains several majors, or an interdisciplinary route shared by faculties or universities. Before using one of the three choices, record the degree, faculty, campus, co-op or regular stream, prerequisites, admission range, supplemental requirements, and when a major or specialization is chosen.

Students are admitted to co-op when admitted to Waterloo by applying directly to a co-op program from high school. Space to switch into co-op after enrolment is very limited, and an applicant refused from co-op may be considered for the regular version of the program only if space is available.

Common Waterloo program decisions

A named Engineering discipline or a flexible first year?

Waterloo Engineering is direct entry. Use the curriculum and work-term sequence for the exact discipline, because changing Engineering programs later can be difficult and is not promised.

Computer Science, Mathematics, or Software Engineering?

Computer Science and Mathematics sit in the Faculty of Mathematics; Software Engineering is an Engineering program. They differ in prerequisites, degree requirements, interviews, professional accreditation, and the one-Engineering-choice rule.

Compare Waterloo Computer Science and Software Engineering

Health Sciences or Life Sciences?

Health Sciences is offered by Health and combines biological and social approaches to human health. Life Sciences is offered by Science and contains Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Psychology majors. Future professional-school prerequisites must be planned separately.

A business degree without a standalone business faculty?

Waterloo business-related options cross Accounting and Finance, Arts, Environment, Mathematics, Science, and Laurier-Waterloo double degrees. Compare the degree awarded, home university, co-op system, specialization, professional designation, and quantitative depth.

Regular study or co-op?

The answer is attached to the program. Some choices offer both routes, some are co-op-only, and some are regular-only. Compare work terms, study sequence, fee, job-search workload, relocation, and time to graduation before selecting the stream.

Aviation through Science or Environment?

Science and Aviation and Geography and Aviation combine a Waterloo degree with flight training, but they use different academic foundations. Confirm screening, medical certification, flight-training costs, start timing, and the exact degree before applying.

Include tuition and program-specific costs in the comparison

Co-op belongs in the program decision

The current Waterloo co-op guide describes four to six work terms depending on the program, normally alternating with study terms. It also says employment is not guaranteed, a co-op fee applies, and switching into co-op after first year is very limited. Compare the exact sequence and graduation requirements rather than treating “Waterloo co-op” as one university-wide schedule.
