Waterloo Residences: V1 vs REV vs CMH

Waterloo classifies all three as traditional-style residences: bedrooms are single or shared, washrooms are outside the bedroom, and a Traditional meal plan is required each term. The important differences are room inventory, washroom layout, cooling, contract periods and the facilities located in each community.

The figures below are published for 2026–27. They are useful for comparing the buildings, but they are not Fall 2027 prices. Waterloo says residence fees are updated each February.

V1 offers the most room formats. A standard double is one shared bedroom. An interconnecting room gives each student a separate sleeping space, but the resident in the back room must pass through the front room to enter or leave. Waterloo groups standard doubles and interconnecting rooms under the Traditional Double assignment label, then uses an f or b suffix to identify the front or back interconnecting room.

REV is simpler: every listed bedroom is a shared lockable double. Its four quads have mixed-gender floors divided into gender-specific sections, and each section shares its own bathroom. V1 also uses gender-specific floors and shared floor bathrooms.

CMH uses a different layout. Each floor has eight private lockable singles, 20 lockable semi-private doubles and 16 all-gender bathrooms. Fifteen bathrooms allow up to three users while keeping the toilet and shower in separate lockable stalls; one is a single-occupancy accessible bathroom. A semi-private double is still shared accommodation, so inspect the official floor plan rather than reading 'semi-private' as an ensuite room.

The room fee is only part of the total. Every V1, REV and CMH resident must choose a Traditional meal plan each term. Waterloo lists 2026–27 plan prices of $4,600 for Traditional A, $4,020 for B and $3,440 for C per four-month term. The university's published comparison uses Traditional B, producing eight-month totals of $16,294 to $18,132 across these room types.

Using another plan changes the total. With two terms of Traditional C, the current room-plus-plan range is $15,134 to $16,972. With two terms of Traditional A, it is $17,454 to $19,292. These totals are arithmetic comparisons from Waterloo's published room and meal-plan fees; check the official schedule and meal-plan terms before accepting a contract.

V1 and REV list first-year communities and no upper-year contracts. CMH lists both first-year and upper-year residents and offers Fall–Winter or Fall–Spring contracts for each group. Waterloo's traditional-style overview adds that CMH singles are typically reserved for upper-year students or students with documented needs for a single room. A first-year applicant should therefore treat a CMH single as limited inventory, not an expected assignment.

A housing accommodation request is the route for a documented functional need. It does not turn a building preference into a guaranteed room. Use the residence application and accommodation process for the relevant applicant group, and read the contract before accepting because the residence agreement is binding.

Waterloo also lists Minota Hagey for upper-year students and a New Residence Building scheduled to open in 2027. Those buildings are outside this three-way comparison. The new building's fee schedule says meal plans are optional, including for its traditional rooms, so do not apply the V1/REV/CMH rule to it.
