Concordia: SGW vs Loyola Campus

SGW is embedded in downtown Montreal around Guy-Concordia metro station. Loyola is 6.5 kilometres west of downtown in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, with a central quad and more green space. These descriptions help you picture the setting, but they do not assign every class in a degree to one campus.

Use the campus code on the course schedule and the building code on Concordia's maps. A program's primary campus identifies its usual academic base; electives, labs, services and activities can still create cross-campus trips.

Concordia's undergraduate campus guide says SGW holds most classes for business, engineering and computer science, fine arts, and many social-science and humanities subjects. Its SGW tour locates John Molson in the Molson Building and engineering, computer science and visual-arts facilities in the EV Building. This makes downtown the practical starting point for those routes, subject to the live timetable.

The same guide assigns most classes in applied human sciences, natural sciences, psychology, communication studies and journalism to Loyola. Loyola's Science Pavilion contains classrooms, labs and research centres for pure and applied sciences, while the campus tour identifies journalism studios and an Athletic Therapy Teaching Clinic. Department pages also locate Communication Studies and Journalism in the CJ Building at Loyola.

Faculty of Arts and Science spans both campuses, so the faculty name alone is not enough. Open the exact program page, note its primary campus, and inspect the location attached to each planned class. If you combine a major, minor or electives from different subject groups, draft a sample week before choosing housing.

For 2027–28 planning, Concordia states that Grey Nuns Residence at SGW will not be available. Do not build a downtown housing plan around that building. Concordia's current Loyola residence page describes Hingston Hall's HA and HB buildings and the Jesuit Residence. Hingston offers private rooms plus shared doubles in HA; most residents share floor bathrooms. Every Jesuit Residence room has a private washroom.

Hingston floors have kitchenettes with small appliances, but residents in Hingston and the Jesuit Residence must take a meal plan. A kitchenette is therefore a convenience, not evidence that residence students can replace the required plan with self-catering. Residence availability, application rules and rates belong in Concordia's residence guide; this campus comparison only shows how location changes the housing decision.

If most classes are at SGW, compare an off-campus downtown or transit-based plan with the actual Loyola residence commute. If most are at Loyola, living there reduces the need to cross the city for classes and labs. Check the timetable and housing terms before signing any lease or accepting a residence offer.

Webster Library is at SGW in the J.W. McConnell Building; Vanier Library is at Loyola. Concordia's live library page lists current hours by date and requires a valid Concordia student, faculty or staff ID during overnight access and university holidays when the library is open. Check the date-specific hours instead of treating a general 24-hour description as a year-round promise.

Recreation is also campus-specific. Concordia describes Le Gym as SGW's only recreational facility, with a conditioning floor, classes, drop-in sports, training and nutrition consultations. Loyola's Athletics Complex contains varsity, intramural and recreational facilities, including a stadium, fields, arena and gymnasium; PERFORM Gym is also at Loyola. Membership, booking and activity schedules can change, so confirm access for the facility you intend to use.

Concordia's shuttle provides free weekday travel between SGW and Loyola for students and employees. Riders must show a Concordia student, faculty, staff or alumni card. The current stops are the front doors of the Henry F. Hall Building at SGW and Loyola Chapel at 7137 Sherbrooke Street West.

Concordia estimates the ride at about 30 minutes, but says departure and travel times vary with traffic, weather and unexpected circumstances. Buses can leave early when they reach capacity. Permanent shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible, though Concordia warns that a replacement bus may occasionally be inaccessible. Check the live schedule and tracker on the day of travel rather than copying the currently posted term schedule into a future plan.

A cross-campus timetable needs more than the stated ride estimate. Include the walk to each stop, possible capacity delay and the trip from the arrival stop to class. If an accessibility need affects travel, review the current priority-boarding guidance and contact Concordia about the operating bus before relying on a particular departure.

Start with the program's primary campus, then map one plausible term. Mark class buildings, labs, library work, recreation, residence or off-campus housing, and any evening commitments. Count required cross-campus days and check whether the live shuttle covers those times. A campus tour can test the setting, but the current course schedule and housing terms should control the decision.
