UBC pharmacy admission requirements: 60 university credits, a 70% floor and a December 1 deadline

You can't apply to UBC pharmacy from high school. First you finish at least 60 university credits, with set science courses. That takes about two years. Then you apply to the four year PharmD. You need at least a 70% average on your last 60 credits. UBC takes up to 224 students a year.

The real route from high school

UBC says high school students cannot apply to the PharmD directly. You first apply to another direct entry bachelor's program. You apply to the PharmD once you have finished, or are registered to finish, all the prerequisite courses.

A science degree is the usual first step, because the prerequisites include second year cell biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry and microbiology. For September 2027 entry to a first year program at UBC, the application opens in early October 2026 and closes January 15, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific. University prerequisites

You need 6 credits of English at any year level, two terms of first year calculus and one term of introductory statistics. You also need one term each of second year cell biology, introductory biochemistry and microbiology, plus two terms of second year organic chemistry with labs.

Add 6 credits of humanities or social sciences, then electives to reach at least 60 undergraduate credits. Because most of the science is at second year level, plan your first year so you can take these courses on time in your second year.

The average you need

The minimum is 70%, or a 2.80 GPA. UBC works this out on your most recent 60 credits of undergraduate work. It checks the average twice: on courses done by the end of Term 1 (December) and again by the end of Term 2 (April).

UBC does not publish an admitted average or an acceptance rate for pharmacy. It admits up to 224 students a year. Treat 70% as the floor. For the wider picture, see the UBC admissions overview.

PIQS instead of Casper

UBC uses Pre-recorded Interview Questions and Scenarios (PIQS). It does not list Casper or an MMI. PIQS takes place in March 2027, and UBC says your answers count toward the final decision.

The UBC Calendar says the faculty looks for academic potential, motivation to study pharmaceutical sciences, and the qualities of a caring and competent pharmacist. Think about real experiences that show those qualities before March.

Who can apply

The UBC Calendar says applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee status with a work permit that does not limit work in health service jobs. International students are not eligible.

The tuition schedule matches this. It lists a domestic rate for the Entry to Practice PharmD and no international rate.

Dates for 2027 entry

The PharmD deadline is much earlier than most undergraduate deadlines. Apply by December 1, 2026 and send your residency declaration by December 10. PIQS runs in March 2027. Offers go out from May 2027 on a rolling basis, and you must register by July 15, 2027.

Students in Ontario often expect a January date. Do not wait. Compare other schools on our Canadian deadlines page.

Four years with practice placements, no co-op

The Entry to Practice PharmD is a four year, full time program. UBC says it cannot be done part time. It includes 42 weeks of experiential learning across the four years.

Year one has a four week outpatient placement. Year two has two introductory placements, one outpatient and one inpatient. Year three has another outpatient placement, and year four has three advanced placements. UBC does not describe a co-op stream for this program.

Tuition for 2026-27

UBC's Vancouver Calendar lists Entry to Practice PharmD tuition of $493.69 per credit for domestic students. First year Science is $206.69 per credit for domestic students, so your prerequisite years cost less per credit.

UBC says tuition is reviewed by the Board of Governors each year. Domestic tuition has recently gone up about 2% a year. Practice fees are charged on top of tuition, so check the calendar before you budget.

What the PharmD looks like

Years one to three are mostly classes. You learn medication management, study design, practice skills and leadership through lectures, labs, tutorials and simulations. In year three you choose 9 credits of electives. Year four is online seminars plus three practice rotations.

Placements can be anywhere in British Columbia, and some run in the summer. Sites range from community pharmacies and hospitals to government agencies, drug makers and universities. UBC tells students to budget for travel and housing during these rotations.

The degree meets the academic rules to register with the College of Pharmacists of BC. It also meets national standards set by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs.

How to use your first two years

Your average is taken on your most recent 60 credits, so your second year carries a lot of weight. Many of the required courses, such as organic chemistry and biochemistry, also sit in second year. Keep a full, steady course load and protect your grades in those terms.

Your application goes in on December 1, before Term 1 grades are final. UBC then looks at your average again after Term 1 and after Term 2. A strong finish in April still counts. Line up any experiences you want to talk about in PIQS early, since it comes in March.

For parents

Pharmacy at UBC usually means about six years in total: two years of prerequisites, then a four year PharmD. Your child chooses a regular degree first, and it should be one they would be happy to finish if pharmacy does not work out.

Mark December 1 on the calendar in your child's second year. Missing it means waiting a full year. The UBC university guide has more on campus life and costs.
