UBC Libraries and Study Spaces: IKB, Koerner, Woodward and More

The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKB) is UBC Vancouver's longest-open study building, open 6 AM to midnight every day this fall. Koerner Library holds the humanities and social sciences collections. Woodward Library covers science, engineering, forestry, health and medicine, and land and food systems. You book group study rooms online for up to 2 hours a day. No official UBC page lists a 24-hour study space for 2026-27.

Which UBC library fits what you study

Hours below are UBC Library's regular Winter Term 1 hours, September 1 to December 22, 2026. Holidays change them. On September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, only IKB and Koerner open, with shorter hours at Koerner. Check the hours site before exam season, when branches often post changes.

Irving K. Barber Learning Centre: the default study base

IKB is open the longest of any UBC Vancouver library building this fall. The Chapman Learning Commons help desk on Level 3 lends equipment, helps with printing, and points you to tutoring and study support.

IKB is not a silent building. Its only designated quiet study areas are the Musqueam Reading Room on Level 4 and the Ridington Room in the Music, Art and Architecture Library. You can talk anywhere else, so pick your floor by the noise you can handle.

Booking a group study room

UBC Library rooms are booked online through its room booking system. You need a group of 3 or more. Each person can book up to 2 hours a day and 3 bookings a week. IKB and the Asian Library take bookings 7 days ahead; other locations take them 21 days ahead. If your group is more than 10 minutes late, you lose the room.

Some rooms have their own rules. Research Commons project rooms in Koerner are for graduate students and faculty. IKB's own page describes a tighter limit of 2 hours a day, twice a week, so read the notes on the room you pick. The AMS Nest has separate study rooms you book with your CWL: up to 3 hours a day, 3 times a week and 14 days ahead.

Printing and paying

UBC uses Pay for Print across campus. You pay with your UBC Card, and you can send jobs from lab computers or online at payforprint.ubc.ca. A letter-size page costs 7 cents in black and white and 40 cents in colour single-sided, or 35 cents a side double-sided. If you live in residence, you can also use meal plan Flex Dollars for Pay for Print.
