Yes, CSEC is recognised in Canada, but it's a secondary credential, not Grade 12 university entry. CXC quotes World Education Services as equating it to a Canadian secondary school diploma. For Fall 2027 planning, most universities we checked want CAPE units with it. Saint Mary's is a published exception for some degrees, and Memorial accepts a year of further study.

Reviewed October 19, 2026. The university rules below are current pages without a named intake year unless a date is shown. Use the CSEC-only guide if you don't plan to take CAPE. Use the CAPE requirements guide to compare CAPE units in depth.

What CSEC is and how CXC grades it

CSEC is the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate. The Caribbean Examinations Council, or CXC, sets the exams. CAPE is the council's later, advanced exam. People often say "CXC" when they mean CSEC. A Canadian admissions office reads the exam name on your results, so use the right one.

CXC reports each subject with an overall grade from I to VI. It also gives profile grades from A to F for parts of the syllabus. Its own descriptors run from Grade I, its top band, down to Grade VI. Grade II shows a good grasp of the key concepts and skills. Grade III shows a fairly good grasp. Grade IV is a moderate grasp, and Grade V is limited.

CXC has advised universities and ministries in its member countries that Grades I to III should count for matriculation. That advice is about tertiary entry in the region. It isn't a rule a Canadian university must follow. CXC also says Grades I to IV are satisfactory for entry-level jobs. So a IV can be useful at work and still fall short for a degree.

The scale changed in the May/June 1998 exams. Before then, CSEC used five points. CXC says Grades I to III in the current scheme match Grades I to II in the older one. If a parent or older sibling is comparing results, check the sitting year first. A pre-1998 Grade III isn't the same as a Grade III today.

What is CSEC equivalent to in Canada?

Two different questions hide inside this search. One is about level. The other is about admission. CXC's recognition page quotes World Education Services, an evaluation agency, as equating CSEC to a secondary school diploma in Canada. That speaks to level. A diploma isn't the same as the Grade 12 university-preparation courses most degree programs require.

Admission is decided by each university. Most of the universities in the table below treat CSEC as the base of your record, then look for CAPE on top. McMaster shows why. It maps CAPE Unit 1 and Unit 2 Pure Mathematics to Ontario's Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Calculus courses. CSEC sits a stage earlier, so it usually can't fill that slot.

That's also why CXC's own Caribbean advice doesn't transfer directly. In the region, CSEC can open a four-year degree. Canadian degree rules are written around Grade 12 courses. CAPE is the Caribbean exam that most universities treat as filling that gap. Treat CSEC as your foundation and plan the next layer for your intended program.

UniversityOfficial rule for CSECWhat still needs your attention
Saint Mary'sArts, Commerce and Science list subjects at CSEC level or higher; grades 1, 2 or 3 considered.Science needs CSEC Additional Maths or CAPE Mathematics. Confirm the 2027 term.
MemorialCSEC plus CAPE, or CSEC plus at least one year at a recognised college or university.Average of 2 in required CSEC areas. CAPE average rule changes from Winter 2027.
TMUCSEC grades 1 to 3 plus six CAPE units averaging 3 or higher.A named preliminary year can replace the CAPE diploma. Ask about your institution.
U of TSix CAPE units; English at CSEC or CAPE level for all programs.Calculus programs need CAPE Pure or Integrated Mathematics.
YorkCSEC results plus CAPE 2-unit results in most Caribbean country rows. The first-year alternative appears in the Bahamas row, not the Jamaica row.
LaurierThree CSEC courses and at least two CAPE Unit 2 courses.Without Unit 2, only Arts and BA Psychology are considered.
Queen'sCAPE diploma with at least six unit courses; competitive average II or B.Program subjects must be at the 2-unit level.
McMasterFour subjects, three at CAPE Unit II; CSEC English B can meet English.Science and math slots map to CAPE units, not CSEC.
ManitobaAt least two CAPE and three CSEC courses.Program averages use Manitoba's own Roman-numeral labels.
DalhousieFive subjects including English, with at least two 2-unit CAPE subjects.CSEC Math meets Academic Math 12; pre-calculus needs CAPE Math.
McGillConsiders CSEC, CAPE Unit 1, Unit 2 and school results. All grades count, including failed or repeated courses.
WaterlooAsks CAPE applicants for the CSEC awarded by CXC.CAPE credit normally needs a final 2; Engineering gives no first-year CAPE exemptions.

Read across the middle column. Only Saint Mary's lists degree subjects at CSEC level alone. Memorial and TMU name a further year as an option. The rest ask for CAPE. Your CSEC results still matter at all of them. They show your English, your earlier mathematics and the breadth of your record.

Each row is a minimum. TMU says that competition can push the required average above it. Memorial says competitive programs can need a higher average or extra information. Meeting the CSEC rule gets your file read. It doesn't promise a place in a limited program.

How universities read grades I to III

There's no national CSEC to percentage chart in Canada. A few universities publish their own scale. Use each one only for that university. Here is Laurier's published scale, which it says reflects a 50% pass:

How universities read grades I to III comparison table
Laurier's Canadian equivalentCSEC gradeCAPE grade
95%II
90%none listedII
85%IIIII
80%IIIIV
70%IVV
60%VVI

Laurier puts CSEC III and CAPE IV at the same 80%. That gap between the two exams is part of its scale. It also says a minimum average of V is required for all honours programs. Read that line with Laurier's table, not with another university's numbers.

Manitoba reads the numerals another way. Its program rules say "III (70%)", "IV (60%)" and "II (80%)". So a III that Laurier writes as 80% appears beside 70% at Manitoba. Neither figure is wrong. Each is that university's own label for its own minimums. Don't copy one into another application.

Other universities set grade floors without percentages. Saint Mary's considers CSEC grades of 1, 2 or 3. TMU wants CSEC subjects at General Proficiency with grades of 1, 2 or 3. Memorial asks for a minimum average of 2 in its required CSEC subject areas. U of T's English route needs a final CSEC English grade of A (I) or B (II).

Some floors apply to CAPE, not CSEC. Queen's lists a competitive CAPE average of II or B. Waterloo normally needs a final CAPE grade of 2 for transfer credit. Keep these apart when you plan. A strong CSEC record won't lift a weak CAPE result, and the reverse is also true.

Which CSEC subjects can count toward prerequisites

A prerequisite is a subject a program requires. Some universities let CSEC fill a few of them. Laurier accepts CSEC English or CAPE Unit 2 English for its senior English requirement. It also accepts CSEC Mathematics for its BA in Psychology and its Bachelor of Kinesiology. Other math slots at Laurier map to CAPE Unit 2 Pure Mathematics.

Dalhousie splits math in two. CSEC Math meets its Academic Math 12 requirement. Its pre-calculus requirement needs CAPE Math. U of T asks for English at CSEC or CAPE level for every program. Its calculus programs need CAPE Pure or Integrated Mathematics. Other prerequisite subjects there should be at CAPE level.

TMU allows program prerequisites at either CSEC or CAPE level. It highly recommends CAPE, though. It gives preference to math and science applicants who present mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology at CAPE level where the program needs them. A CSEC science may meet the floor and still leave you less competitive.

McMaster accepts the better of CSEC English B or CAPE Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies for English. Saint Mary's Science route needs CSEC Additional Maths or CAPE Mathematics, plus a CSEC science. BSc Access is available for students with CSEC Mathematics. Its Engineering award on that page is a diploma, not a degree.

Make a short grid for each program. Put the required course in one column. Put the CSEC or CAPE subject you hold beside it. Mark any gap with a question mark and ask admissions. The Engineering requirements guide explains why math level matters so much for those programs.

English proof from CSEC

Several universities use CSEC English as language evidence. U of T accepts a final CSEC English grade of A (I) or B (II). You upload the CXC statement of results to its portal. Saint Mary's says an English test isn't required on its CXC route. Memorial says further proof isn't normally required once you finish CSEC and CAPE.

McGill uses a schooling test instead. You're exempt if you've lived and attended school for at least four years in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language. Otherwise, it asks for official results. Compare each university's rule in the English test guide before you book or pay for a test.

Sending your CXC results

CXC sends transcripts only to institutions, evaluators or employers. It doesn't send them to you. You request them through the CXC portal. Have your candidate number, your name at the time of the exam, your date of birth and the exam years ready. Add the university's exact name, admissions office address and email.

CXC doesn't merge sittings into one transcript. If you wrote CSEC in two different years, list each sitting. Add your university application number in the comments so admissions can match the record to your file. Laurier, for one, needs final certifying statements sent directly from CXC to clear conditions.

Universities also ask for copies earlier. McGill wants all CSEC certificates uploaded with your application. Waterloo lists the CSEC awarded by CXC for CAPE applicants. TMU may ask admitted students for their CXC Examination Centre Number and ten-digit Candidate Number to verify results online. The credential evaluation guide explains when an outside report is needed.

If you hold CSEC only

You have three published kinds of route. Saint Mary's lists CSEC-level degree subjects. Memorial accepts CSEC plus a recognised postsecondary year. TMU names a preliminary year at the University of the West Indies, Barbados Community College or an equivalent institution in place of the CAPE diploma. The CSEC-only guide compares these routes in detail.

An extra year can change your scholarship options. UBC's International Scholars program for September 2027 needs direct entry from secondary school. Applicants must have graduated from high school no earlier than June 2026. Its application is due November 15, 2026, and documents and English proof are due January 31, 2027.

Your country guide and next steps

Each Caribbean country has its own school calendar and records. Use the guide for your country: Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Guyana, the Eastern Caribbean or the Bahamas. Bahamian students usually hold BGCSE, a different credential.

Then pick three to five programs. Check each one's CSEC role, CAPE rule and grade floor. Compare awards in the international scholarship guide. Read the international student guide for study-permit steps and current proof of funds. Put each university's dates into the application deadline guide before you request your CXC transcripts.
