Queen's vs Western

how to compare the degree you would enter

Queen's and Western both offer broad first-year routes where later subject choices depend on university courses and marks. Compare the degree and its plan rules, not one school-wide cutoff. For Fall 2027, Western Science publishes a low-to-mid-80s guideline; Queen's lists low-80s Arts and Science consideration figures for September of last year, without naming that cohort.

Compare a degree rather than a campus stereotype

An overall Queen's or Western choice becomes clearer when you name the degree on each offer. Queen's Arts, Queen's Computing and Queen's Commerce are different entries. Western Science, Social Science and Engineering are also different. A story about one friend's business degree cannot describe the subjects, cost or entry rules of every other program at the same university.

Use one main academic interest and one possible second interest to test the choices. Look for the courses you would take in the first two terms. Then trace the path into the later subject you want. The answer may favour Queen's for one student and Western for another because their subject combinations, entry stages and personal needs differ.

This page uses broad Arts and Science routes to explain that decision. If business is the real choice, use our Queen's Commerce versus Western Ivey comparison. Direct Commerce entry and conditional AEO pre-admission need their own analysis. They should not dominate an overall school comparison for a student who wants physics, history or psychology.

Keep the school labels on the grade ranges

Queen's lists low 80s for Arts and Science in its Competitive Average for Admission Consideration table. The explanation calls these the minimum averages considered for September of last year and warns that a later year can be higher. The table does not name the prior cohort. We keep that relative label instead of inventing a year or a guaranteed Fall 2027 cutoff.

Western's Science and Social Science recruiting pages name September 2027 and show low to mid 80s as the Admission Average Guideline. Each says a mark in the suggested range does not guarantee admission. Western's general Ontario page also describes ranges for last year's incoming class. A guideline, an incoming-class range and a minimum for consideration are not identical measures.

A small difference between those figures should not decide your whole list. Check the individual subject floors and any extra selection first. If you are a few points below the description, work on the marks you can still change and keep a sound alternative. Neither school's table provides enough information to calculate a personal probability from a single average.

Build the high school subjects for your later goal

Queen's Arts requires English within the six-course Ontario set. Its Science route requires English, Calculus and two of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Those are different academic starting points. If you want to preserve a science option while applying to Arts, check the later gateway subjects as well as the high school requirement. A broad degree offer does not create a missing course background.

Western Social Science names English as the required course, while recommending maths for later subjects. Its page notes that Psychology needs university maths and Economics modules need Advanced Functions and Calculus. For Science, Western requires English, Calculus and two subjects from a wider named maths and science list. It also explains why Biology and Chemistry matter for certain first-year courses.

The short entry list can therefore hide a longer preparation plan. A student may meet faculty admission requirements while being unable to take a course needed for the intended module. Before changing Grade 12 subjects, compare both the admission list and the first-year timetable. Ask the department about any uncertain course chain early enough to act on its answer.

Understand Queen's plan selection after first year

Queen's Arts & Science explains the distinction between the degree program you enter and the plan that becomes your main subject focus. Many students request a plan after first year, or after completing at least twenty-four units. Some entries already have a plan. The first-year guide names those exceptions, so the broad structure should not be applied to every Queen's offer.

Gateway courses help keep a plan available. Queen's says that missing the right gateway can block entry to the plan you want. Its selection page sets out academic thresholds for automatic acceptance or a pending list. A pending-list threshold is not a reserved seat. The rules also differ for upper-year students seeking a change of plan.

When you compare Queen's with Western, write the later plan beside the original degree. Ask what you would do if you missed the first choice and which other plans your courses preserve. That is a practical test of flexibility. Being free to request a subject is different from being guaranteed entry to every popular plan in that faculty.

Read Western's module system with the electives

Western describes four module types: Honours Specialization, Specialization, Major and Minor. A module is a group of courses in a subject. The degree type and module combination affect how much room remains for electives. Combining two interests does not always mean taking more courses, but it can use the room you might otherwise keep for open choice.

The university calls first year flexible in several listed faculties, including Science and Social Science. Students take the early courses for possible modules plus electives. It separately says Engineering, Medical Sciences, Music and Nursing have more structure. Do not treat the most flexible example as the experience every Western entrant will have.

Choose first-year courses that support two plausible module paths. Then check each module's university-grade conditions in the relevant calendar. A high school offer to a broad faculty is the first stage, not the final approval for every honours option. Use our Western Science guide and Queen's Arts guide to follow the named examples in more detail.

Match the work experience to the faculty

Queen's Undergraduate Internship Program, QUIP, is a long paid internship route for eligible faculties. The current description gives twelve to sixteen months, typically after third year, followed by a return to complete degree requirements. It is not a short work term inserted after every academic term. Check eligibility and whether the longer time away suits your academic and housing plans.

Western Science has its own co-op process, while Social Science lists a separate work route among its experiences. Those faculty options cannot be extended to every degree without checking. Ask about entry timing, required standing and the sequence for the exact program. An internship title alone tells you little about whether it is mandatory, optional or limited enrolment.

For both schools, make room for the job search. A supported work route does not guarantee a role, employer or wage. Compare what happens if you need another search round and how a placement elsewhere would affect housing. Work can add valuable experience, but assumed income should not be the only way your first-year budget balances.

Use the right tuition example and a dated budget

Queen's 2026-27 Ontario table lists $6,204.60 tuition for thirty units in Arts & Science excluding Computing. It assesses tuition per unit, so a different load can change the bill. Student charges are listed separately. Computing, Commerce and other faculties have different rows. Do not use the ordinary Arts amount to price a selected professional or computing route.

Western's 2026-27 full-time domestic schedule lists $6,171 Ontario tuition for Science excluding Computer Science and for Social Science. Other charges sit beside tuition. Computer Science and Management and Organizational Studies use a different row. Compare the Queen's cost guide and Western cost guide using matching residency and degree categories.

Fall 2027 prices remain pending in this comparison. Use the current cycle as a reference, then add housing, food, supplies and travel. Check whether an award needs its own form and when funds reach the student account. The Queen's hub and Western hub lead to residence and support pages for that fuller plan.

Keep program extras and the main application apart

Queen's confirms March 1, 2027 for most first-year applications, with February 1 for Commerce, Health Sciences and Nursing. Those three also have a February 15 supplement deadline. March 31 is the general document deadline. Their current supplement FAQ still carries older format labels and promises a November update; the final new-cycle format should remain pending until that appears.

Western's Ontario application deadline is January 15, 2027. Its ordinary Science route has no supplement, but Western Integrated Science is an exception. The current Ontario page gives April 2027 as TBC for WISc, without a confirmed day. Arts portfolios, auditions and other program assessments have separate rows. Do not assume every applicant either needs the same test or needs no extra material.

Some Western pages returned a verification challenge to direct fetching. We read the separate official web versions for the grade and degree details used here and retained both receipts. Before acting, check the Queen's deadline calendar and Western deadline calendar, then the actual offer conditions. Choose a degree route you can explain in courses, access rules and total cost, rather than a campus stereotype.
