Accessible and gender-inclusive residence

compare the actual room and process

For Fall 2027, ask each university about the room features you need and its route for gender-inclusive housing. An accessible room, an all-gender washroom and a mixed-gender flat solve different needs. Send a request through the campus process before choosing a room. A building preference alone doesn't secure an approved accommodation.

Key facts

Room features differ
An elevator or ensuite doesn't establish that a bedroom, shower or route meets your access needs.
Gender requests aren't a diagnosis
Queen's uses self-report for gender requests. Guelph's gender-inclusive housing uses the ordinary application, with no accommodation form for identity alone.
Co-ed has a narrow meaning
A mixed-gender floor can still have same-gender bedrooms and gender-designated washrooms.
Dates belong to their cycle
Several deadlines are for Fall 2026. Fall 2027 accommodation dates aren't posted yet, and room availability depends on each request.

Reviewed against each row's official source. Recheck the source before you act, because dates and fees change.

Start with the feature you need, not just a building name

Write down what the room and route need to let you do. That could mean moving through a doorway with your equipment or using a shower safely. It could mean a visual alarm or a room without carpet. These are different requests. Queen's lists them separately, which is a useful reminder that the word accessible doesn't describe one standard room package.

Ask about the whole route as well as the bedroom. You may need to reach a kitchen or laundry room and travel to class in winter. A lift in the building doesn't answer every one of those questions. Share functional needs through the housing process and ask which features are confirmed for the offered room. A sample photograph isn't a measurement of that room.

Keep gender and privacy questions clear too. Co-ed can describe a floor where people of different genders live in separate rooms. An all-gender washroom describes who can use that facility. A private washroom describes the sharing arrangement. None of those labels alone confirms step-free access or a mixed-gender roommate match. Ask the question that matters to your daily life.

Waterloo: separate CMH's floor layout from room matching

Waterloo gives a useful example at Claudette Millar Hall. It lists an accessible single-occupancy all-gender bathroom on each floor. Its other all-gender bathrooms have shared sinks with lockable toilet and shower stalls. That is detailed washroom information. It doesn't establish that every bedroom has the same access features or that every bathroom is for one person at a time.

CMH has mixed-gender floors, but double rooms are assigned to occupants with the same gender identity. Upper-year mixed-gender roommate groups have a separate staff review. The first-year FAQ says Housing will discuss options with people whose gender is unspecified and won't require disclosure. Other Campus Housing residences have different washroom and suite rules. Don't apply the CMH layout to Village 1 or a suite elsewhere.

Apply for Accessible Housing alongside your residence application if you have disability-related needs. The process uses a qualified health professional's form and prioritizes approved needs over a conflicting roommate request. It doesn't offer a specific building or sole-use private bathroom as an accommodation. June 8, 2026 is the published prior-cycle deadline, not a Fall 2027 date. Affiliated university-college residences have their own teams, so contact them directly instead of assuming Campus Housing's process covers every residence.

Queen's: choose the health or non-health request route

Queen's separates health accommodations from non-health requests for gender identity/expression and creed/spirituality. Health requests use a provider form; a diagnosis is optional. Gender-related requests use your self-report, with provider information optional. You can explain the placement need without treating your identity as a medical condition. Use the form that matches the reason for the request. Standard multi-occupancy bedrooms use the same identified gender. Single Plus shares its bathroom with another room of the same identified gender and doesn't accept roommate requests. Use the non-health request route to discuss a placement need beyond those standard rules.

Its Accessibility Hub lists Leggett accessible single rooms with shared bathrooms and Watts accessible singles with private washrooms. It also says a Brockington tub with a grab bar isn't fully accessible. That warning matters more than a general building label. The hub says 17 buildings while current residence pages say 18. The counts conflict, so use the named room features and current admissions process rather than a total.

The current accommodation page gives June 1, 2026 at 4 p.m. ET for first-year Fall 2026 requests. It still considers later requests, but suitable placement before selection or move-in isn't guaranteed. An approved accommodation doesn't create a residence offer or move you up a waitlist. Fall 2027 dates and vacant accessible-room counts aren't confirmed in these pages.

Western: mixed-gender opt-in is an ordinary housing choice

At Western, select mixed-gender housing on the Residence Placement Questionnaire. Matching then disregards gender and uses lifestyle preferences. You could be matched with the same or a different gender. Opting in doesn't guarantee a mixed-gender group or your preferred building. The FAQ asks you to contact Housing for a mixed-gender shared double-room request.

Read the washroom rules alongside that choice. Western says traditional communal washrooms remain single gender, though some communities have additional all-gender washrooms. People in hybrid or suite accommodation decide how to share their suite washrooms. A room match and a washroom layout are related questions, but one doesn't establish the other. Ask what arrangement applies to the actual room you might receive.

For physical access, Western lists barrier-free suites in five named halls. It also names Medway-Sydenham and Alumni House as exceptions to its broad physical-access statement. Use the separate accessibility request to describe medical or functional requirements. Don't read the medical-document section as a condition for the ordinary mixed-gender opt-in. The official pages don't give a dated Fall 2027 accommodation deadline.

McMaster and uOttawa: ask beyond the co-ed label

McMaster lists elevators and washroom types by building. Hedden has single-use washrooms along its floors; Les Prince has ensuite bathrooms. Neither description proves a wheelchair-adapted shower or bedroom. Its accommodation form asks an appropriate professional to explain functional needs without requesting a diagnosis. The published June 5, 2026 deadline and $58 late-document fee belong to that cycle; Fall 2027 terms aren't posted yet.

McMaster's building descriptions don't establish a universal mixed-gender roommate request process. Ask Residence Admissions how your gender-related placement need would be handled. Don't assume that a co-ed building offers mixed-gender bedrooms. Its service-animal policy landing page confirms that animals can be part of residence accommodation but doesn't list the detailed approval steps.

uOttawa distinguishes co-ed units from co-ed floors in its residence comparison. Annex, Hyman Soloway and 45 Mann list co-ed units; other buildings have non-coed rooms or washrooms. Ask Housing about the specific gender-diverse placement process. Its medical documentation rule concerns disability accommodation. It doesn't establish that every gender-related request requires medical proof. It doesn't list available adapted rooms.

Guelph: rank gender-inclusive housing separately from a medical need

Guelph offers optional Gender Inclusive Housing, or GIH, across its residence types. It doesn't use gender as a matching criterion and includes access to an all-gender washroom. A shared room can include people of different genders. GIH isn't a promise of a single room. Trans and gender-diverse students don't have to choose it if another option suits them.

Its FAQ says to rank GIH first on both preference pages if you require it. Gender-related placement alone doesn't need an Accommodation Request Form. A separate medical or other functional need, such as requiring a single room, does use the form for that separate reason. The accommodation page gives June 1 without a year. Don't turn that into a confirmed June 1, 2027 deadline.

The access matrix also separates motorized-mobility needs from simply avoiding stairs. It lists doorway, ramp and shower features for the former, with potential locations at East Village and Lennox & Addington First Floor Commons. Don't substitute a first-floor room from another category without checking its features. Guelph doesn't publish exact GIH room locations on this page; ask Housing about your needs without expecting a public bed map.

Arrange service animals and personal care before committing

A service animal needs the residence's own approval process. Queen's distinguishes an animal that accompanies you to classes from one living only in residence, with different registration steps. uOttawa requires written Housing approval before arrival and lists supporting documents and an agreement. Guelph directs you through Student Accessibility Services and Housing, with approved service-animal placements listed at East Village Townhouses and West Village. Coordinate that location need with mobility and GIH requirements. Don't assume an academic registration automatically completes every housing step.

Ask separately about personal or attendant care. Guelph's official support page says the university doesn't provide attendant care, though its accessibility team can connect you with community resources. The named provider terminology on that page is older, so confirm a current referral. The other campuses' pages don't describe attendant care. An accessible room isn't proof that personal care comes with it.

Before accepting, ask for the approved features and any unresolved issue in writing. Keep the housing offer and accommodation decision as separate records. Use the residence planning guide for broader costs and the upper-year housing guide if you need another route. Published building features help you ask precise questions; they don't replace an individual access assessment or secure a bed.
