2026-27 tuition uses different domestic and international models

Read the billing basis before comparing the two columns.

Domestic rates are per three-credit course, not an annual degree fee. International amounts are annual Fall 2026-entry viewbook figures. Non-instructional fees and housing are additional; these aren't Fall 2027-entry prices.

Domestic tuition starts with the course fee index

The University of Alberta attaches a fee index to each course. A common three-credit course has index six. The 2026-27 index value is $121.56. Our calculation is $121.56 x 6 = $729.36 for that course. Ten such courses give $729.36 x 10 = $7,293.60, our calculation. These numbers describe a stated course mix rather than every Arts degree or every first year.

Some courses have faculty-specific rates. Business and Engineering are examples. Your degree can also include courses offered by another faculty. Count the actual required classes and electives before using an annual total. The Alberta university hub keeps the broader program overview, while the Computing Science guide covers that entry route and its program choices.

The domestic schedule groups Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It doesn't print a separate Ontario-resident tuition band. That doesn't make every Canadian applicant eligible for every Alberta award or aid program. Ask the university if your status needs an exemption or document review. Your Bear Tracks assessment follows registration, and the Registrar says Fall/Winter assessments become available in early July.

International tuition belongs to your admission cohort

The international model sets an annual tuition amount and a total program guarantee. Your admission letter states both. The current model normally gives the typical program length plus one year to finish under its terms. Tuition isn't simply a domestic course price with a surcharge. The guarantee covers instruction. Student fees, residence and textbooks sit outside it and can change under their own rules.

The 2026-27 viewbook's Arts amount is $39,233 each year for a Fall 2026 entrant. Its column headed 2027 is that same student's second year. It isn't a price for a new Fall 2027 applicant. The same point applies to the Science, Business and Engineering rows. The viewbook itself says the admission offer controls if its printed amount differs from the offer.

Taking fewer courses may not reduce your program-based charge. The model says a partial withdrawal doesn't reduce term tuition unless you withdraw from every course within the stated refund window. Repeated courses and courses outside degree requirements can cost extra. Ask how a transfer or program change affects your guarantee before making the change. A related change within a faculty has different conditions from a new unrelated program.

Fall 2027 international increases are approved policy

The Board approved changes for new international undergraduates starting in Fall 2027 on March 27, 2026. The published general increase is 5.5%. Computing Science has a stated 26% increase to align its tuition with Engineering. Nursing has a stated 20% increase. These are approved changes, so it would be wrong to describe every Fall 2027 tuition fact as unknown.

The checked page doesn't publish the resulting dollar table for each new program cohort. We haven't multiplied a viewbook price by a percentage to invent an offer amount. Computing Science and Nursing are named exceptions to the general change. A current student's protected cohort and a new entrant's starting price are different questions. Use the guarantee in the offer for the program and start term you actually accept.

The page also lists a 2% domestic increase for Fall 2026. That sentence doesn't approve a Fall 2027 domestic price. Its heading says 2026-27 while parts of the text cover Fall 2027 international entry. Read the date attached to each change. The Alberta Engineering guide and Business guide retain their admission tasks rather than becoming new tuition owners.

Don't pay annual health premiums twice in a budget

The on-campus full-time fee table shows $1,494.07. Its health and dental rows cover twelve months, so that whole total isn't a recurring amount to double for Fall and Winter. Our calculation adds the recurring rows to get $1,089.30 each term. It then counts the annual premiums once. The separate Arts association fee also applies in each Fall/Winter term.

The recurring rows include Course Material Access at $259 per term. The university describes flat-fee access to course materials, mainly digital, with print supplied where digital options aren't available. That program has an opt-out. An opt-out changes how you buy materials and may change costs, rather than proving books cost nothing. The example retains the charge and adds no guessed book allowance.

Extended health is $204.93 and dental is $199.84 in the published table. Our calculation is $204.93 + $199.84 = $404.77 for the annual plans. Permitted opt-outs have their own process. The campus wellness fee funds services and isn't that insurance premium. Augustana uses another fee table. Don't apply the North Campus subtotal to Augustana or an off-campus placement without checking those rows.

Treat residence recruitment estimates as estimates

The Canadian recruitment page gives a 2026-27 residence-and-meal estimate of $14,800 or more. Its footnote names a single room with a private washroom in Schäffer Hall for eight months. This is a broad planning estimate. It isn't an exact current quote for every Lister room. The same page's $7,200 general-Arts tuition estimate differs from ten standard courses at the detailed rate.

Lister's current page confirms an eight-month room-and-board contract with meals included. The meal-plan page separately confirms $6,332 for the 2026-27 seven-day plan in Lister and Peter Lougheed Hall. You can't opt out of that required plan in those residences. If your contract already includes food, adding another $6,332 would count it twice. Compare the offer's complete package before paying.

The Alberta residence guide remains the owner for buildings and housing choices. The Lister rate rows load separately and weren't returned in the current reads, so we haven't freshly confirmed an exact room subtotal. Request the room offer's rates. We keep living costs outside the worked academic example instead of presenting an approximate recruitment amount as an exact assessed bill.

The first-year example is an academic subtotal

The example assumes a domestic Arts student taking five standard three-credit courses in each of Fall and Winter. It keeps the full published fee slate and no opt-outs. Our calculation is $7,293.60 tuition + $2,178.60 recurring fees + $404.77 annual plans + $10.48 Arts fees = $9,887.45. That is the academic subtotal for this defined case, not a full year of living in Edmonton.

Room, food, travel and personal costs remain additional. Extra course equipment or materials outside the retained access program may also be needed. No scholarship is deducted. The $3,700 recruitment line combines books, supplies and fees, so we don't add it to a subtotal that already counts detailed student fees. That would mix an estimate with assessed components and risk counting the same fees again.

The cost calculator lets you enter your own budget. It has no saved Alberta preset. Keep a note beside each amount showing its cycle and scope. Replace the course assumption with your real registration and add the housing offer when available. International students need the annual offer amount instead of this domestic ten-course tuition calculation.

Academic and housing accounts have separate deadlines

The tuition page's current top table gives September 30, 2026 and January 29, 2027. Lower down, old duplicate content still shows 2021-22 dates. Use the current labelled table and the due amounts in Bear Tracks. A Fall/Winter course total doesn't mean every charge can wait until winter. Check how the university assesses each term and any instalment charge before choosing when to pay.

The residence page's standing term-rent rule says September 30 and January 30. Those dates have no cycle year. Its winter day differs from the dated January 29 academic tuition deadline. We retain that distinction rather than making both accounts share one date. The room offer identifies term or monthly rent. Monthly rent for certain housing contracts isn't a general monthly undergraduate tuition plan.

Loan or award expectations don't replace a payment arrangement. Check posted credits and pay any shortfall. Residence online banking has its own payee details, so use the housing instructions for housing payments. The Canadian application deadlines guide covers applying. An admission deadline, a response date and a student-account payment date each complete a different task.

A credited deposit still has cancellation conditions

The current offer-acceptance page lists a $500 Canadian tuition deposit. It lists $5,000 for international applicants, or $1,000 for international applicants already studying in Canada. Exempt applicants and professional programs have separate rules. The deposit credits tuition after assessment. Don't add it again to the full tuition total. Your Launchpad offer sets the response deadline that applies to you.

The general refund policy calls the tuition deposit non-refundable, with exceptions for a later admission denial after required documents or a study-permit refusal. Those cases need the school's process. They don't make a change of mind refundable. A second-choice deposit can transfer to a later accepted first-choice offer under the stated rules. Keep the university's record of the transfer rather than paying another assumed deposit.

Housing charges a separate $25 non-refundable application fee and a $500 deposit credited to first-month rent. The standing cancellation page gives July 31 for a Fall booking to avoid further contract fees, while keeping the deposit non-refundable unless an exception applies. Admission or visa refusal needs notice and proof within ten days and before move-in. New-cycle terms still need confirmation from the room offer.

A partial course withdrawal has model-specific refund rules

The general policy separates the registration deadline from the later refund deadline. A domestic course withdrawal after registration closes but within the refund window can reduce instructional fees by 50%. After the refund boundary, there's no reduction. Stopping attendance doesn't withdraw you. Check that Bear Tracks shows the course change and the changed assessment. Faculty receipt of a later withdrawal form can control its effective date.

The international program model has an important limit. Dropping only some courses doesn't reduce the set term tuition. Withdrawing from every course within the 50% window can reduce that term's tuition by 50%. Spring or Summer work-experience registration can create another term assessment, even while the total guarantee stays the same. Engineering co-op redistributes the remaining tuition under its rules rather than simply adding a new full guarantee.

The current refund page links a dated Calendar, but that Calendar read was blocked. We quote the policy boundaries rather than guessing exact refund days. Check the current academic schedule before dropping anything. A later academic withdrawal limit isn't proof of a refund. A credit also may cover another balance or return to a loan service centre, so it isn't always cash that becomes available for another school.

Apply for awards before waiting for a final cost total

The entrance-scholarship application for September 2027 opened October 1, 2026 and closes January 10, 2027. Apply to the university first so you can access the award form. The separate Discover University of Alberta and Turtle Spirit Pathway awards close February 15, 2027. Their page says offers begin in mid-April. Those dates are confirmed even though new tuition dollar amounts remain unconfirmed.

Automatic awards don't need that form. The current domestic Gold Standard award can pay up to $6,000 to the top 5% in each faculty. There isn't one fixed percentage that promises it across every faculty. The $30,000 National Achievement Scholarship pays over four years to selected out-of-province Canadians. The current page places it under Application-Based Scholarships, so don't assume it needs no form.

The Alberta financial-aid guide owns scholarship choices and fuller eligibility. Read an actual award offer before reducing the budget. The entrance page separates domestic awards from those for international students attending high school in Canada. Don't assume every award applies to your status. A printed viewbook's older award deadline also isn't the new Fall 2027 deadline.

Plan for aid timing and the next price check

Government funding needs completed loan agreements before release. Alberta's guidance says funds often arrive about ten business days after the agreement is processed. Award-letter dates are estimates. The usual split is at the start and middle of the academic year, often September and January. Your own lender and account determine the actual release, so don't promise a deposit can wait for a particular funding day.

Loan money sent to the university covers tuition and fees, never residence or book costs. Any eligible remainder can reach your bank account. You're responsible for an academic shortfall and for paying housing separately. The refund page says excess scholarship, award and bursary credits are normally processed automatically after the payment deadline. Credit on the account isn't immediate cash for the next housing payment.

The checked sources don't confirm 2027-28 domestic tuition or new international program dollar prices, non-instructional fees, room-and-meal prices, academic payment/refund dates or individual aid releases. Recheck February 1, 2027 and before a commitment. Keep the approved international increases, January/February award deadlines and April 30, 2027 North Campus housing-guarantee date separate from those gaps. A confirmed guarantee application date doesn't confirm next year's room price.
