For Fall 2027, Canadian universities accept South Africa's National Senior Certificate under their own admission rules. An IEB NSC is still an NSC. For Commerce, check the degree's maths and English requirements. Queen's offers first-year Commerce entry. Ivey's school-leaver route is AEO status before two university years and later HBA study.
Reviewed October 18, 2026. NSC means National Senior Certificate. IEB means Independent Examinations Board. Current country rules are useful for planning, but they aren't guaranteed Fall 2027 cut-offs.
NSC, IEB and the name on your certificate
Start with the qualification shown on your final school record.
The IEB runs Umalusi-accredited NSC examinations. It follows South Africa's national curriculum. The examination board and the qualification therefore answer different questions. Saying that you attend an IEB school tells admissions who assesses your work. Saying that you're completing the NSC tells it which credential to review.
Keep the school transcript and examination result together. A transcript can show current marks before the final certificate is ready. It should also make the subject names and levels clear. If you move schools or write through another body, explain that history. Don't relabel an award because a different name seems more familiar to a Canadian reader.
The IEB International Secondary Certificate is a separate qualification offered outside South Africa. If that's your award, ask about it by name. An NSC entry on a Canadian university website doesn't establish ISC acceptance. The same care applies if you're taking Cambridge A-levels or the IB Diploma at a South African school.
Toronto and Ontario Tech both ask for the NSC with matriculation endorsement. Send the part of your record that shows that status when requested. A general school pass and meeting a Canadian program's prerequisites aren't the same test. Before choosing an extra course, ask whether it would address the specific requirement missing from your file.

| University | Current published rule | What it means for Fall 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | NSC with matriculation endorsement. | Credential accepted; this country entry doesn't set a single competitive average. |
| Queen's | NSC; approximately 75% to fall within the general competitive range. Commerce names senior English and Mathematics at 80% or equivalent, plus its supplement. | The general range doesn't replace the Commerce subjects or its selection process. |
| uOttawa | NSC and at least 75%, with required senior subjects. | Higher program standards can apply; this current guidance has no intake year printed. |
| Manitoba | Umalusi-issued national certificate and five senior credits. Commerce lists an equivalent 80% across English, Pre-Calculus Mathematics and two academic courses, with at least 70% in each. | This direct-entry standard differs from University 1. It isn't a Canada-wide conversion. |
| Ontario Tech | NSC with matriculation endorsement. Non-English documents need its specified translation. | Check the selected degree's subjects separately; no national Commerce average is established. |
Each row links to a school guide. Its official country source is listed below. The figures are minimums or published competitive-range guidance as labelled. They don't predict your offer. In particular, don't convert Ivey's low-90s wording into a made-up NSC percentage by borrowing Queen's or Manitoba's scale.
Check Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy carefully. Queen's expressly excludes Math Literacy for Engineering and several Science or health routes. Its Commerce row names Mathematics. If you hold Mathematical Literacy, request a decision on the Commerce prerequisite before assuming it meets that wording. A strong total can't make an unaccepted subject equivalent.
Queen's Commerce: first-year entry from the NSC
Your academic file and supplement both form part of the application.
Queen's South Africa page gives a specific Commerce rule: senior English and Mathematics, each at 80% or equivalent. Use those course requirements when you speak to your school. The same page says grades vary by program and year. It doesn't promise admission once you meet the subject floors.
Choose the correct application route. If you're applying to another Ontario university too, Queen's directs you through OUAC, Ontario's university application site. International applicants applying only to Queen's can use its international portal. Common App is another published option for applicants outside Canada. Submit through one appropriate route, then follow the university's instructions.
Commerce requires one written response and one video response through Kira Talent. It remains a separate task after your admission application. Keep your Queen's student number and portal access available. Use the practice functions to check your equipment. Write and record your own work; Queen's application-fraud policy applies to supporting material too.
For Fall 2027, Queen's confirms February 1, 2027 for the Commerce application, February 15 for the required supplement and March 31 for documents. Track these as separate dates. The Queen's deadline guide keeps the wider calendar together. For the degree and its full supplement format, continue to the Queen's Commerce requirements.
Ivey: AEO now, HBA after university study
Apply to your starting program and Ivey through their separate processes.
Ivey's secondary-school route offers Advanced Entry Opportunity, or AEO. It's conditional pre-admission status. You spend the first two years in a Western or affiliate program before HBA study. That distinction matters when you compare it with Queen's direct Commerce entry.
Ivey publishes a low-90s average in Grade 12 courses, including English, and a university-preparation maths course or equivalent. Its page doesn't give an NSC-to-Ontario conversion. Ask how your exact maths subject and NSC marks will be assessed. You also need admission to the program where you'll study first. An Ivey application can't replace that university decision.
The AEO application includes essays and a video assessment. Its confirmed deadline is January 15, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. Check your local time before submission. Later HBA entry has its own process; don't select a university-student deadline while applying from secondary school. Save the instructions for the entry stage you're actually seeking.
AEO also has progression requirements during your first two university years. Read them before choosing your starting degree. Plan for the course load and required business course, not just the application you submit now. The Ivey HBA and AEO guide owns those detailed rules. The Queen's versus Ivey comparison explains the course structure once you've confirmed academic fit.
Compare the cost at the right stage
Ivey HBA tuition isn't the price of your first year after matric.
Compare the cost at the right stage comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| Route | Published international tuition | Cycle and exclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Queen's Commerce, Years 1 and 2 | CAN$60,839.46 for the normal 33-unit year; published total CAN$63,424.42 with listed levy, ancillary fees and UHIP. | 2026-27. Housing and meals extra. Fall 2027 pending. |
| Ivey, each HBA year | CAN$70,040; its page estimates international ancillary fees at about CAN$2,600 per year. | 2026-27. This is university Years 3 and 4. First two years use the starting program's rate. Fall 2027 pending. |
Use the Queen's fee schedule and Ivey HBA fee page as dated planning evidence. Don't multiply the HBA price by four and call that a four-year quote. Equally, don't price the full Ivey route using only the first two years at Western.
Put each university year on a separate line in your budget. Add a room contract and meals for the months you'll stay. Include health coverage, books and flights. Keep a record of which items are estimates. The Western tuition guide and Queen's tuition guide help you distinguish the billing categories.
Awards that can include South African students
Check entry stage and renewal rules before counting an award.
Ivey's international page says exceptional international AEO students entering Western in Year 1 are automatically reviewed for admission awards of CAN$2,500 to CAN$8,000. Those current figures have no year given, so they aren't confirmed Fall 2027 awards. It separately tells HBA candidates to complete the awards section. An HBA funding option shouldn't be added to your first-year budget.
For major financial need, UBC International Scholars is for eligible international school-leavers, including South Africans. For 2027, you must seek your first degree and have graduated no earlier than June 2026. You need strong academic results and evidence of financial need, plus nomination and a referee. Degree exclusions apply. Submit your UBC admission application before starting the award application. Both applications are due November 15, 2026; required admission and English documents are due January 31, 2027 under its 2027 calendar.
Toronto's Pearson scholarship is a separate international option, but new September 2027 candidates have missed its early steps. School nomination closed October 9, 2026 and the required admission application closed October 16. The remaining November 6 scholarship deadline serves applicants who met those earlier dates. Don't treat it as a fresh opening.
Compare other international entrance awards against the full cost. Keep competitive applications outside your confirmed funding total. Check the currency and payment year on an external offer. A large headline amount can cover only part of a Canadian business degree once annual tuition and housing are included.
English proof and your final NSC record
Ask about language evidence even if your subject marks are strong.
Toronto lists South Africa in its exemption guidance for at least four years of English-language study. It assesses your records after application. An English subject on the NSC doesn't alone prove the language used for every class. Ask your school for evidence of the relevant years and teaching language if it's requested.
uOttawa's country page uses a different test: at least three years of full-time study where English is the sole teaching language, apart from language courses, in a country where English is official. Don't send one generic waiver letter to every university. Check the rule for your degree's language and follow the delivery method the university accepts.
Arrange how the school will provide current marks and final records. Keep your applicant number with each request. If your final results arrive after a date in the portal, contact admissions before that date. Don't assume a school-leaver calendar in another country gives you an automatic extension.
From an offer to the study permit
Allow time for the school's attestation process after an offer.
IRCC requires your acceptance letter, identity evidence and funds. Most new undergraduate applicants also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, or PAL/TAL. Your school explains how to obtain it, often after acceptance and a payment. Check the deposit's refund terms before you pay.
For applications from September 1, 2026 outside Quebec, IRCC's living-cost amount is CAN$23,448 for one person, excluding tuition and transport. You must also explain how you'll fund later years. This matters for the higher-cost HBA stage. Check the threshold again when you apply rather than treating today's amount as fixed for your full degree.
The PAL validity page currently gives 2026 cap-year details. A 2027 expiry schedule remains pending. Ask the university which valid letter you'll need for your actual permit submission. An admission offer for Fall 2027 doesn't make an expired attestation usable.
