Quebec R-score explained

calculation and program cutoffs

An R-score compares your college result with its evaluation group, then adjusts for that group's school background. Universities use it differently. For Fall 2027 planning, compare the exact program and score type. McGill Arts' September 2026 overall minimum was 27.5; Mechanical Engineering's was 34.4. Neither sets a guaranteed future cutoff.

What the R-score adds to your course mark

Your percentage shows the mark you earned in a course. The R-score adds the context of the group assessed with you. It also uses information about that group's secondary-school results. This is why two equal percentage marks can lead to different R-scores. A percentage-to-R-score chart with one fixed result for every student would leave out required parts of the method.

The Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire (BCI), Quebec universities' coordinating office, publishes the method. For normal Quebec college records, the Ministry of Higher Education calculates the official CRC statistics. Your college or a university where you have applied can provide your score. BCI does not issue each student's record. The French-system programs at Marie de France and Stanislas are an explicit exception to the usual calculation arrangement.

The stated scale runs from zero to 50, with most course R-scores between 15 and 35. That describes the scale, not a universal good score. A program can have several required subjects and a core score as well as an overall score. Start with the exact university program you want, then read which measure it uses.

The current course formula has two group corrections

The published course formula is CRC = ((Zcol × IDGZ) + IFGZ + 5) × 5. Zcol starts with your mark minus the evaluation-group mean, divided by that group's standard deviation. In plain language, it measures how far your result sits above or below the group's centre, using the spread of its results.

IDGZ adjusts that result for the spread of the group's secondary-school Z-scores. IFGZ then adjusts for group strength using the mean of those secondary-school Z-scores. These inputs use final marks in Secondary IV and V subjects with ministerial exams. The marks combine exam and school-year results. The formula is not a college prestige score. It does not assign one fixed bonus to every student at a named CEGEP.

The revised method has applied since Fall 2017. Older explanations can show a formula without IDGZ or a different secondary-school correction. Use the current documents. The detailed method also has bounds and a special rule for very high marks. A quick calculator using only your percentage and a printed class average cannot reproduce all the official inputs.

Your evaluation group may differ from one timetable class

The group used for CRC can include several class sections. They must share the relevant course and common assessment within the same college, term and year. The college forms the group under the rules. Your result therefore does not always use only the people sitting in your particular classroom. Ask the college about an unclear group rather than guessing from a timetable.

Marks below 50 are left out when the method calculates the benchmark mean and spread. That does not remove a failed course from your own record. It can also make the CRC group mean differ from the class mean displayed on a transcript. This distinction matters when a student tries to reconstruct a course score from incomplete class information.

Course units weight the average

The average CRC is weighted by the units attached to each contributing course. It is not a simple average that gives every course equal weight. The method multiplies each course CRC by its contributing units, adds those products, then divides by the total contributing units. A course with more units can therefore affect the average more strongly.

Failed courses receive reduced weight: one quarter of their units in the first college enrolment term, and one half in later terms. Those are weights in the calculation. They are not a 25% or 50% deduction from the R-score number. Universities can still consider failures and repeated courses in their own review; McGill explicitly says that it does.

Physical education can count. It has been included since Fall 2007 when a valid CRC can be calculated. Earlier physical-education courses and remedial or upgrading courses are excluded. Don't use the old claim that gym never affects an R-score. Read the record's actual course period and the rules for which courses contribute.

Overall CRC and program CRC answer different questions

Overall CRC describes the contributing college record as a whole. Program CRC tracks courses tied to your Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC), a college diploma, under BCI's rules. The score used can depend on whether you have completed a DEC and how many courses contribute to the latest program. Switching programs does not simply erase all earlier results or let you select only a few high marks.

Without a completed DEC, BCI normally uses your latest program CRC if at least 16 courses contribute. Otherwise, it uses your overall CRC. If you completed a DEC before returning in another program, it retains the higher eligible program CRC. That compares your completed DEC with your latest program. The latest program still needs 16 contributing courses. A historical exception lowers the count to 12 for people taking at least four college courses in Winter 2020. Relevant prerequisites and general-education courses have their own inclusion rules. Each university's policy still matters; McGill uses overall CRC as explained below.

McGill expressly uses overall CRC rather than program CRC. It also calculates a prerequisite core. Science and Engineering don't use the same subject set, and Management has its own maths core. Read both the overall and subject requirements. Meeting an overall figure does not settle every subject requirement. McGill also has an exceptional review for significant improvement after a program change. You select Extenuating Circumstances and provide your own personal statement. It may then assess selected CEGEP grades; this is discretionary, not a promised reset.

Use McGill and Concordia figures with their labels

McGill labels its table September 2026 admission. Arts shows 27.5 overall, while Mechanical Engineering shows 34.4 and Software Engineering 31.0. Those programs also have core requirements. The school explicitly says past figures don't represent future requirements. Use the McGill admission guide to compare the full applicant route, including prerequisites and documents.

Concordia calls its figures indicative minima. Its English pages show 25 overall and 26 maths for the usual pre-university Computer Science route. Eligible technical DECs have a separate prerequisite exception. The 26 maths requirement applies if those prerequisite courses were taken. Its French table calls the matching number program CRC. The figures match, but the measure label differs. If you have changed DEC programs, ask which score applies rather than assuming the difference is harmless.

Aerospace Engineering's pre-university DEC row uses 30 overall, with 27 in maths and physics on the English page. The technical-DEC route is separate. Concordia does not name an entry year beside these current figures, and it warns that the applicant pool can change the result. Treat these figures as current guidance, not a confirmed Fall 2027 cutoff.

Laval offers and Montreal admitted averages are not the same measure

Laval's program pages identify the last college applicant who received an offer as of August 15, 2026. Architecture shows 30.158, Law 30.701 and Criminology 27.841. These are dated offer results. They are not average scores for everyone who enrolled, and they don't tell you the number of offers or a personal admission probability.

Montreal's program pages describe people admitted on the basis of college studies as of July 9, 2026. Law shows a 32.463 minimum and a 34.378 mean. Architecture shows 30.962 and 33.091. International Studies shows 28.042 and 31.012. Keep the mean separate from the minimum, and keep all three decimal places where the source publishes them.

The universities warn that historical admission figures don't guarantee a later offer. Compare the right applicant category as well as the program. A university applicant may be assessed through a different measure. Laval's explanation distinguishes college CRC from its university-record CRU or cote Laval. A university GPA and a college R-score should not be treated as the same scale.

Ask about a missing score instead of treating it as zero

The code 99.999 means a CRC could not be calculated and is left out of the average. It does not mean an R-score of 99.999 or a mark of zero. BCI lists several causes, including an evaluation group with too few qualifying marks or identical marks. A missing code needs an explanation from the college before you use it in a planning calculation.

One unusual case remains unclear across the official documents. BCI's January 2025 questions and answers says too little qualifying Quebec secondary-school data means no group CRC. Its detailed explanation instead describes setting the group corrections to neutral values. The documents describe this case differently. Ask the college how your official result was handled; don't choose the more favourable interpretation yourself.

Check your record and the Fall 2027 cycle

BCI describes recurring calculation periods in early October, mid-January, early February and mid-June. These are general processing periods, not exact release dates promised for Fall 2027. The method also allows recalculation of previous terms. A corrected mark or group record can therefore change an earlier CRC. Obtain the updated official record when you make an application decision.

None of these universities has published a numeric Fall 2027 cutoff yet. Check the program requirements again as new admission results appear. Laval had not yet posted its 2027-2028 limited-enrolment list in October 2026. That is why the figures above come from individual program pages. Montreal's general-statistics links lead to older brochures. Those older brochures don't show results for the new cycle.
