For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities from St Lucia and the Eastern Caribbean with CSEC and CAPE. Match the university's subject and unit rules to your record. CSEC-only options also exist at named programs, including Saint Mary's Arts and Commerce. Plan housing and funding alongside the academic application.
Reviewed October 18, 2026. This guide covers CSEC/CAPE applicants in Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The university's rules for the qualification you actually hold come first. A passport country doesn't replace a missing academic subject.
Check your qualification before choosing a country category
Your school may offer CAPE, A-levels or another curriculum. Choose the matching system on the university application. Don't select a credential because its country label seems closest to your island. If a selector omits your territory, send admissions your school name and examination board. Ask which category to use before submitting.
The same care applies in Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands and Montserrat. These places appear on some university English-language lists, but that isn't an academic admission decision. Families using a French or another national curriculum need that curriculum's rule. This CSEC/CAPE guide shouldn't replace it merely because the school is in the Eastern Caribbean.
Name the award precisely. CSEC means Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate. CAPE means Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination. CXC is the examination council. A school-leaving certificate, CAPE diploma and associate degree describe different records. Tell the university what you've completed and what you're taking now, rather than writing only “CXC”.
Ten universities with published CSEC or CAPE rules
Use this table to narrow your choices, then check the degree's required subjects.
Ten universities with published CSEC or CAPE rules comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| University | Published route and subject detail | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|
| U of T | Six CAPE units. English may be CSEC or CAPE. CAPE Pure or Integrated Mathematics supplies its calculus prerequisite. | Current curriculum rule; faculty requirements remain separate. |
| Queen's | Six-unit CAPE diploma; prerequisites normally at the two-unit level, with Communication Studies treated separately. Competitive average II/B. | Current rule, with program-specific subjects. |
| York | CAPE diploma with at least six units including at least three Unit 2, plus three CSEC results. Required-unit grades I to III; overall minimum III. | Latest available 2026-27 handbook; check again for Fall 2027. |
| Manitoba | At least two CAPE courses and three CSEC courses in its published CAPE framework. Degree tables set different subjects and grades. | Current framework; ask admissions if your country isn't in the selector. |
| McMaster | Four subjects, including three at Unit II. Its own table maps English, Pure Mathematics and sciences. | Current published curriculum policy; don't import another school's equivalencies. |
| Laurier | Three CSEC courses plus two Unit 2 courses; limited substitution with two Unit 1 courses. Honours minimum average V. | Current rule under Laurier's scale, with exceptions for named subjects and degrees. |
| Memorial | Required CSEC subjects averaging 2 and two two-unit CAPE subjects averaging 3. Another route adds a recognised postsecondary year to CSEC. | Explicitly Winter 2027 onward; prior postsecondary study follows transfer rules. |
| McGill | Advanced-level framework uses three different subjects or its stated alternative. CXC review includes CSEC, school grades and CAPE Unit 1 plus predicted/final Unit 2. | Current review process; faculty ranges aren't a CAPE percentage conversion. |
| Dalhousie | At least five subjects including English, plus at least two two-unit CAPE subjects. CSEC Mathematics meets Academic Math; CAPE Mathematics meets pre-calculus. | Current CAPE page; selected degree may set higher requirements. |
| Saint Mary's | Arts: CSEC English plus four academic subjects. Commerce: CSEC English and Mathematics plus three. CSEC grades I to III considered; Science has extra mathematics rules. | Current policy with no intake year printed, and explicit country rows for the six countries covered here. |
The regional CAPE guide gives a wider credential comparison. For a CSEC-only record, read the direct-entry and further-study options. Neither a diploma title nor a count of passes proves you've met a program's prerequisites. Keep your intended major beside every university requirement you save.
Carleton's current viewbook refers you to its admission selector rather than repeating the older CAPE table. Its current country result remains pending here. Ask for your country-and-program result rather than using a search snippet from an older publication. A document checklist can name an exam system without showing the academic threshold for your degree.
Waterloo's selected Biomedical Engineering result does give a concrete CAPE rule. It asks for five subjects, at least two at Unit 2. Pure Mathematics and Physics must be Unit 2, with a minimum grade of 2 in each. Its listed English and Chemistry can be CSEC, with CAPE recommended, and need grade 2.
That result also requires another academic Unit 1 or Unit 2 course at grade 2. It recommends mostly 1s for selection and requires the AIF and interview. This is a Biomedical Engineering example. Check another program's own selector before applying its subject list or competitive guidance to your choice.
Plan sixth form and college study as different routes
You may study CAPE at an institution whose name includes “college”. That doesn't tell a Canadian university whether you're a secondary or transfer applicant. Describe the actual courses and award. If you've also started an associate degree, include it. Don't hide that study to preserve high-school applicant status.
This distinction affects documents as well as admission. A CAPE prediction comes from your current school process. A postsecondary transcript records college or university attendance. You can need both. Ask the receiving university how it classifies the study before you pay for an extra term or assume it will earn university credit.
For Engineering, keep the unit level visible. McMaster's equivalency table uses both Pure Mathematics units for functions and calculus. It uses both units of each named science for its senior equivalent. At Dalhousie, CSEC Mathematics and CAPE Mathematics fill different mathematics requirements. A good result at the wrong level can still leave a gap.
Credit after admission is another question. Dalhousie considers selected two-unit CAPE subjects with grades I, II or III; one-unit courses don't qualify for that credit. Your degree can limit how credit applies. Don't plan a shorter stay or fewer tuition payments until the university gives you an assessment for the actual program.
Arrange school records while final results are pending
Make a file for each university with your applicant number and requested records. Note who must send each item. Your school may be able to issue predictions for current CAPE units, while CXC sends the official examination record. A personal upload can help a review without meeting the final official-document condition.
CXC's current instructions tell you to identify each examination sitting and the institutional recipient. They say separate sittings aren't combined into one transcript. Check the registration number and name used at the time of each exam. Include your university reference where the order process permits it.
Keep the recipient's official email and postal address together. If records are delayed, contact admissions before the deadline and explain what's missing. A processing confirmation isn't the result itself. Ask whether interim school evidence can be considered, then keep that answer with the application. Don't assume an extension has been granted without a reply.
English evidence for the Eastern Caribbean
Saint Mary's marks its CXC curriculum as not requiring an English test. Its country table separately lists the six countries covered in this guide with that result. This is a useful current rule to check. It doesn't make the same decision for another university.
U of T accepts final CSEC English I or II as an English-proficiency qualification. It also names the covered countries on its possible exemption list for at least four years of full-time English-language schooling. You request an exemption through the applicant portal after applying. U of T reviews your records and decides.
If you moved between school systems, explain the dates and language of teaching. A country on a list doesn't prove that every school record meets the study-duration test. Use the English evidence guide to compare options. Check the academic English prerequisite separately, even when the language test is waived.
Price the degree and the time away from home
Carleton's current international viewbook quotes 2027/2028 and 2028/2029 tuition in Canadian dollars. Its listed BA/BSc group is CAN$39,000 a year; the business group is CAN$45,000; BEng and its listed computing/design group are CAN$55,000. These are program groups, not a single price for every international student.
The same table estimates miscellaneous fees at CAN$2,500 for those groups, with a separate Nursing figure. It doesn't include your full cost of living. Add the housing contract you actually choose and travel between home and Canada. Don't convert a current exchange rate into a fixed four-year promise. Leave room for changes in personal costs.
Compare the financial-aid guide with the offer's payment terms. Find out when a tuition deposit becomes non-refundable. Ask which fees a scholarship covers and when the credit reaches your account. A large award paid later won't necessarily cover the first payment you must make to accept a place.
Scholarships open through international eligibility
The universities' general international awards can be relevant to the covered countries. Check the actual entry conditions instead of searching only for an island-specific award name. Some require direct secondary-school entry. Others need a school nomination or detailed financial records. A community-college or associate-degree route may change which category applies.
For UBC's September 2027 International Scholars Program, complete the admission application first. The award application is due November 15, 2026, so both steps must fit before that deadline. Its required academic documents and English evidence are due January 31, 2027. Arrange the nominator and teacher reference early enough for you to finish your form.
UBC assesses significant financial need and academic achievement. Its IMES merit route is different. The listed CAN$10,000 to CAN$25,000 annual IMES range belongs to 2026-27; a Fall 2027 value is pending. Applying for International Scholars means you aren't considered for those merit awards. Review the choice before you submit.
Pearson's September 2027 award already passed its October 9 nomination and October 16 admission deadlines. As of October 18, only someone who met those steps should rely on the November 6 scholarship deadline. Don't mistake an active application page for an invitation to skip the earlier requirements. Use the international scholarship list for other eligible routes.
Confirm housing for 2027 and later years
Guelph's Fall 2027-Winter 2028 page says residence applications open February 1, 2027. International undergraduates have a degree-length guarantee if they apply, pay the CAN$750 deposit and accept admission by June 1. Its international transfer category also has these conditions. Read the category that matches your offer.
For later years, Guelph requires eligible international students to be currently living in residence and to apply and pay the deposit by April 15 each year. Its summer housing has separate eligibility, such as summer courses or a co-op work term. A degree-length guarantee isn't a promise of every summer room without further steps.
Carleton admissions publishes a first-year guarantee for secondary-school entrants admitted by May 31, 2027. Accept the residence offer and pay its required advance payment by June 7, 2027. Its Housing application page still gives 2026 first-year dates. Those pages describe different cycles; don't carry the older payment instructions into your 2027 calendar.
Carleton's current year-round international option can cover up to twelve months a year, for up to five consecutive years. It requires separate fall/winter and summer applications, good standing and no overdue account fees. The exact 2027 term instructions remain pending on that mixed-cycle page. Check them before booking travel around an assumed continuous room contract.
Compare room types in the Guelph residence guide and Carleton residence guide. Ask the housing office about any gap between term contracts. A room for the teaching year doesn't settle where you'll live during every break.
Study-permit funds and next steps
Most new undergraduates need a study permit and a provincial or territorial attestation letter. Follow the institution's process after admission, then use IRCC's document checklist. Quebec uses the CAQ process. The current attestation page doesn't confirm specific 2027 cap-year validity dates, so that detail remains pending.
For one person applying outside Quebec on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC lists CAN$23,448 in first-year living funds. Add tuition and transportation. You must explain funding for the rest of a longer program as well. This threshold can change before you apply. It isn't a complete university budget or a permit guarantee.
Keep evidence of where the money came from. IRCC's examples include six months of bank statements and supporting source records. A sponsor should explain the relationship and available support. Don't rely on future work in Canada to meet this requirement.
Before travel, satisfy your offer conditions and confirm the room's move-in date. Use the Ontario deadlines guide for Ontario choices and the international-family guide for household planning. Keep the university, housing and permit decisions separate in your calendar so one unfinished step doesn't disappear behind another approval.
