For Fall 2027, you can apply from Barbados with Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) results. You don't need an Ontario diploma to use a university's CAPE route. Ontario Grade 12 is another option, but choose it only after checking your remaining diploma credits, degree prerequisites and added cost.

Reviewed October 18, 2026. Compare CAPE in Barbados with an Ontario school transfer below. The Caribbean admissions guide explains the wider regional system. The country route depends on the curriculum you actually study, not just the passport you hold.

Compare the CAPE rules before moving

Start with your degree's required subjects, then check the credential total. A strong CSEC record doesn't replace a missing advanced subject. Nor does a general entrance minimum tell you the grades needed for a competitive program. Keep the subject level beside each result when building your shortlist. A single column headed “CXC grades” can hide the difference between CSEC, CAPE Unit 1 and CAPE Unit 2.

These eight universities publish different rules. “Current policy” means the checked admissions page, not a guaranteed Fall 2027 offer standard. The linked university hubs explain each institution's wider options.

Each row links to its official evidence in the source list below. Carleton's current viewbook sends readers to its requirements tool and doesn't reproduce the older CAPE table. A current numeric Carleton rule wasn't confirmed here. Don't use an old table to choose your subjects. Waterloo, Western and UBC also need their own current curriculum checks before you rely on a subject plan.

Build a useful CAPE subject plan

CAPE can be the more direct academic plan if your Barbados school offers the subjects you need. List the degree first. Then ask which Unit 2 subjects must appear in your final record. McMaster's four-subject rule has three at Unit II. Laurier permits some Unit 1 substitution, but not for a required Unit 2 course. Those are different routes, even when the same student could meet both.

For Engineering, compare the McMaster Engineering requirements with your actual mathematics and science choices. McMaster maps both Pure Mathematics units to Ontario Advanced Functions and Calculus. It maps both units of each named science to its senior Ontario course. Applied Mathematics has a different mapping. Don't enrol in it as a Calculus substitute without written confirmation.

McMaster also names the English route. It uses the better of CSEC English B or CAPE Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies. Check that wording against the English courses on your record. A pass in another English subject doesn't establish that you've met the rule. Ask McMaster about any gap before choosing your final subject plan.

Credit after admission can affect the choice too. McMaster may consider CAPE Unit 1 and Unit 2 grades of II or better for advanced credit. Laurier's credit policy uses Unit 2 results of III or better and can award up to the equivalent of six courses, depending on the program. Admission eligibility and degree credit are separate decisions. Ask whether credit replaces a required course, counts as an elective or changes your first-year timetable.

If you have CSEC only, make a plan for the missing level of study. Memorial names CSEC plus at least one year at a recognized college or university as an alternative to CSEC plus CAPE. That creates a transfer application, not a promise that every first-year course will transfer. Keep course outlines and report all post-secondary study. The college transfer guide helps you compare the receiving degree's rules.

What an Ontario Grade 12 move actually requires

An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) isn't awarded just for attending a school for one year. Ontario's transfer policy gives the receiving principal the job of assessing your past learning. The principal decides credit equivalents and what you still need to finish. Send complete Barbados school records before paying a deposit. Ask for the assessment in writing, with the expected graduation date.

The provincial transfer table is a guide, not a personal admission offer. It shows seven remaining credits after three completed secondary-school years, or four after more than three years, subject to the policy and your record. Your principal must assess the relevant category. The literacy requirement still matters. Community hours and online-learning requirements also need a recorded decision. Ask which rules apply to your Grade 9 entry year and transferred credits.

University entry is another check. U of T's Ontario route requires the OSSD and six Grade 12 university or university/college preparation subjects, called 4U/M courses, including English. A school can propose enough credits to finish the diploma yet leave you short of the six subjects or a degree prerequisite. Check both plans. For a science degree, trace each required science and mathematics course through the timetable.

Timing can decide the issue. Ask when each Ontario course is offered, which prior course it needs and when marks reach universities. A suitable course that starts after the document deadline may not solve the problem. Keep your CAPE place until you understand the Ontario offer and refund terms. Don't leave a confirmed study plan for an unwritten promise of a faster diploma.

Ontario applications and tuition status

The OUAC guide for 2027 uses three Group A tests. You must currently take at least one Ontario high-school course, be under 21 on or before December 31, 2026, and have or work toward an OSSD with six 4U/M courses. All must apply. The application assigns the group from your answers. Having an OSSD after leaving school doesn't by itself meet every test.

A move can therefore change the application group, but it doesn't settle every other question. Tell universities about both school systems. Ask how they'll review earlier CSEC or CAPE results and any repeated subjects. Read the Group A and Group B explanation and the Ontario application deadlines. Track the university's document and supplement dates separately from the OUAC application date.

UBC says citizenship status normally determines domestic or international tuition, with exceptions. An Ontario school address isn't a fee quote. Ask each university which category your actual status creates. This matters when comparing the added school year with direct CAPE entry. A lower academic hurdle, if a school claims one, is not evidence of lower university fees or a stronger admission chance.

A parent or custodian before the school year

Canada's immigration department, IRCC, says a child under 17 needs a parent or legal guardian with them, or a custodian in Canada. At 17 or older, an officer can still request a custodian while the person is a minor. Ontario's age of majority is 18. Discuss the school's care arrangements before choosing housing. A room booking alone doesn't answer who will support your child in an emergency.

Ask who can approve medical care, attend school meetings and respond if the housing arrangement ends. Request the school's own conditions as well as IRCC's form instructions. These are practical checks for the proposed move, not reasons to assume every student needs the same arrangement. The international family guide gives parents a wider planning checklist. A secondary-school place and a university offer remain separate applications.

English evidence and the cost of the extra year

Barbados appears on U of T's list of countries for a possible school-based English exemption. Its rule uses four or more years of qualifying English-language study. You request the exemption through the applicant portal. One new Ontario year doesn't automatically erase the rest of that test. Keep evidence of the language used at your Barbados school, and check the separate academic English prerequisite.

No single Ontario high-school price was confirmed for your proposed move. Ask the named school for its fee year, course load and refund schedule. Add housing, meals, insurance, travel and any care charges. Compare the complete extra year with staying for CAPE. Don't compare school tuition alone with the full cost of another route. Allow for a later university start if the assessed timetable needs more time.

For university planning, UBC publishes 2026-27 international Vancouver Arts tuition of CAN$51,530.40 for 30 credits and Science tuition of CAN$53,082. Those are 2026-entry figures before other costs. They aren't confirmed Fall 2027 starting prices. Use the UBC tuition guide for the campus and fee context. A four-year plan should also explain how later years will be paid.

Some future-cycle prices are already available. Carleton's current international viewbook quotes CAN$39,000 tuition for its listed Arts and Science degree group, CAN$45,000 for Commerce and International Business, and CAN$55,000 for the listed Engineering and computing group. It labels those amounts 2027/2028 and 2028/2029. Miscellaneous fees are separate estimates. Use the exact degree row and confirm its course-load basis before comparing it with another school's quote.

Scholarships that a Barbadian applicant can check

McMaster's Nicholas and Janice Brathwaite Award page lists Barbados among eligible countries. The checked page is the 2026 competition. Its November 1, 2025 award deadline has passed, and a Fall 2027 round wasn't confirmed. Keep it on a list to check again, rather than treating the old form as an open award. Academic admission and the scholarship decision remain separate.

Pearson at U of T has a September 2027 schedule. As of October 18, 2026, its October 9, 2026 school nomination and October 16 admission application cut-offs have passed. The November 6 scholarship deadline is still ahead for nominees who met the earlier steps. The page's lower FAQ still shows older dates. Use the explicitly labelled 2027 schedule and seek clarification about a file; don't assume an extension.

UBC's International Scholars Program is open for September 2027. It combines strong academic and community evidence with a financial-need assessment and a nomination process. Submit your UBC admission application before starting the award application. Both are due November 15, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PST. The program sets January 31, 2027 for required records and English evidence. These dates come from UBC's dated calendar. Applicants to this program won't be considered for merit-based awards. Compare the two award routes before choosing one.

Use the international scholarship guide to find other terms you meet. Check how an Ontario school move affects the nominating school and direct-from-secondary status. Don't start post-secondary study without checking awards that exclude it. Write your own scholarship answers and follow each award's assistance rules. Money that hasn't been awarded can't fill a gap in your confirmed budget.

Study-permit planning for the chosen route

Most first-degree study-permit applicants need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL. IRCC treats secondary school differently from degree study. A high-school exemption doesn't establish an undergraduate exemption. After university admission, follow the school's current letter process. Quebec uses the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) process. Check the rules for your institution and study level before arranging travel.

For applications made from September 1, 2026, IRCC lists CAN$23,448 for one person's first-year living expenses outside Quebec, plus tuition and transportation. Show funding without relying on work in Canada, and explain later-year support. Check the amount again when you apply. Keep the acceptance letter, financial evidence and identity records consistent with the study plan you've chosen.

Choose the route only when its key parts fit together. Your school should confirm the subjects and graduation plan. Each university should confirm the credential it will assess. Your family should understand the full cost and what remains conditional. That gives you a sound comparison between CAPE in Barbados and Grade 12 in Ontario, with a backup if a course, award or permit doesn't work out.
