University Application Guide for Parents: How to Help Your Child Apply in Ontario

Your job is to support the application, not to run it. For Fall 2027, your student applies through OUAC, and current Ontario high-school students must submit by January 15, 2027 for equal consideration. The first three choices cost $159. You can help most with the calendar, the budget, RESP and OSAP paperwork, and spotting scams. Your student keeps the accounts, the writing and the final decisions.

What your role is, and what stays with your student

The OUAC application is built for the applicant. Your student creates the account, verifies their own email address and gets an OUAC reference number after paying. They'll use that number whenever they contact OUAC or a university.

Keep the logins with your student. Sit beside them while they work, but don't sign in as them or answer messages for them. The OUAC account has its own Message Centre, and your student needs to be the one checking it.

Writing has to be theirs too. UBC asks whether a personal profile authentically reflects the applicant's own words. Waterloo tells Engineering applicants to be honest and authentic on its Admission Information Form. You can ask questions and point out a confusing sentence. You shouldn't rewrite it.

  • Good help: a shared calendar, a budget, reminders and a quiet place to work.
  • Good help: reading a draft and asking what they meant.
  • Not your job: choosing their programs, writing answers or replying to offers.

Grades 9 to 11: diploma requirements and course choices

Every Ontario diploma needs 30 credits, 40 hours of community involvement, the literacy requirement and at least 2 online learning credits. Students who started Grade 9 in 2023 or earlier need 18 compulsory and 12 optional credits. Students who started in 2024 or later need 17 compulsory and 13 optional credits.

For most students, the literacy requirement means passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. The ministry also lists a financial literacy requirement, completed in Grade 10 Career Studies, for students who started Grade 9 in 2025-26 or later. Volunteer hours can start the summer before Grade 9.

Grade 11 is when course choices start to close doors. Toronto Metropolitan University, for example, asks for the diploma plus six Grade 12 U or M courses, including Grade 12 U English. Program prerequisites sit on top of that. Use the high school course planner and the Ontario academic requirements guide with your student before course selection.

Grade 11 marks matter more than many families expect. McMaster may use them in a preliminary review when Grade 12 marks aren't ready, though it says it won't refuse anyone based on Grade 11 grades alone. Read more in do universities look at Grade 11 marks.

Grade 12: the Fall 2027 OUAC calendar

OUAC's Fall 2027 instructions list late September 2026 as the opening of the undergraduate application. Your student will need their Ontario Education Number, a 9-digit number printed on their report card.

January 15, 2027 is the Group A deadline to submit a completed application for equal consideration. Supplementary forms often have their own dates. Waterloo's are February 1, 2027 for Engineering and February 15, 2027 for most other programs, for example.

Students who apply by January 15 can expect a response from each Ontario university by May 28, 2027. June 1, 2027 is the earliest date they can be required to respond and pay a registration or residence deposit. See the Ontario university application process, the deadline guide and how to accept an offer for the detail.

What applying and first year will cost

Applying is the small part. Five OUAC choices cost $261: the $159 base fee plus two extra choices at $51 each. Compare other provinces in the application fee guide.

Tuition depends on the program. Statistics Canada's preliminary 2026-27 average for Canadian undergraduates in Ontario is $9,306. At Carleton, a first-year Ontario student pays $7,624.02 for Arts and $12,290.12 for Engineering in 2026-27, with compulsory fees included.

Residence can cost as much as tuition, or more. Western's 2026-27 rooms run $8,900 to $13,620, and most first-year buildings add a mandatory meal plan. UTM's first-year rooms run $9,606 to $17,120 before food. Compare schools in the residence guide.

RESP basics: the grant, the bond and withdrawals

The Canada Education Savings Grant adds 20% to the first $2,500 you contribute each year, up to $500. With unused room from earlier years it can reach $1,000 in one year. The lifetime limit is $7,200, and grants stop after the end of the year your child turns 17.

Lower- and middle-income families get more. Using 2025 adjusted family net income, families under $57,375 get an extra $100 a year. Families between $57,375 and $114,750 get an extra $50. Above that, only the basic grant applies.

The Canada Learning Bond is for children from low-income families born in 2004 or later. It pays $500 for the first eligible year and $100 for each later year up to age 15, to a maximum of $2,000. You don't need to contribute anything, and the government adds $25 toward opening the plan. Your child must be under 21 to apply.

When your student enrols, the grant, the bond and the investment growth come out as educational assistance payments. Those are taxable income for the student, not you. Your own contributions can come out tax-free. In the first 13 weeks of a full-time program, these payments are capped at $8,000.

OSAP basics for families

OSAP is Ontario's student aid program. It offers grants, which don't need to be paid back, and loans, which do. Applicants are considered for both, and a student can decline the loan after approval. For programs starting on or after August 1, 2026, more provincial funding comes as loans rather than grants.

It's open to Ontario residents who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons. International students aren't eligible.

A single student who left high school less than four years ago and hasn't worked full-time for 24 months in a row is a dependent student. The application asks for parents' social insurance numbers and tax information. Ontario says a contribution may be expected from parents, depending on their income. For 2026-27, the student's own expected contribution is $3,600, though some students have it waived.

Right now the 2026-27 application is the one Ontario has published. The 2027-28 opening date isn't posted yet. The OSAP guide covers the steps, and the scholarship finder and scholarship application guide cover money you don't repay.

Privacy: what a university will tell you

Expect less information than you got from high school. U of T Scarborough says that under Ontario's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, a student must give permission before it releases their information to anyone, including a parent. That covers grades, courses, residence status and fees owing.

Carleton says the same law stops it from discussing a student's account with parents without the student's written permission, even when parents pay the bill. If you'll be paying, ask your student to show you the account, or to set up whatever consent the school offers.

During the application, have your student make the calls. They have the OUAC reference number and the portal logins. You can sit in and take notes.

Red flags to watch for

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada lists warning signs that apply to any family. Be wary of anyone who promises an acceptance letter for a fee or charges to apply for a scholarship. The same goes for anyone who guarantees a scholarship, offers discounted tuition for a fee, or asks for documents or payment over social media. Applying for a scholarship is usually free, and tuition should be paid directly to the school.

  • A consultant who guarantees admission or a scholarship. Universities make those decisions, and no one can promise them.
  • An offer to write essays or profiles. That breaks the authorship rules schools like UBC set out.
  • Anyone asking for your student's OUAC, email or portal password.
  • A deadline you can't find on OUAC's or the university's own site.

Notes for international and Caribbean families

Costs are much higher for international students. Statistics Canada's preliminary 2026-27 average for international undergraduates in Ontario is $50,088, and OSAP isn't available to them.

To get a study permit, your student needs an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution. In most cases they also need a provincial attestation letter and proof of funds. For applications made on or after September 1, 2026, outside Quebec, one student needs $23,448 a year for living costs on top of tuition and travel. IRCC updates that figure each year.

Use the international students guide and the Caribbean pathways guide for curriculum and document questions. The credential evaluation guide explains how non-Ontario transcripts are read.

If your student is also looking at college

Ontario colleges use a separate system, Ontario Colleges. For Fall 2027 programs, applications opened September 26, 2026, colleges start sending offers November 1, 2026, and February 1, 2027 is the equal-consideration date. Students must accept by May 1, 2027, a month before the university date.

One $150 fee covers up to five choices, with no more than three at one college. The Ontario Colleges application guide and the college directory cover the rest.
