Direct entry or a prep year

This is the main difference. Regina's nursing degree is the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or SCBScN. The University of Regina and Saskatchewan Polytechnic run it together. Grade 12 students can apply for direct entry, with no pre-professional year, and you work with patients from Year 1.

USask's Bachelor of Science in Nursing is four years too, but Year 1 is a pre-professional year of university courses. USask says plainly that you cannot begin the program from high school. Most students take that year on the Nursing Prep pathway in the College of Arts and Science.

So at USask you apply twice. You apply to Nursing Prep from Grade 12. Then, during your prep year, you apply to the College of Nursing for Years 2 to 4. A USask offer in Grade 12 is not a nursing seat yet.

Grade 12 courses each school wants

From Saskatchewan, Regina asks for English Language Arts 30, one of Foundations of Math 30, Pre-Calculus 30 or Calculus 30, Chemistry 30 and Biology 30. You need at least 70% in each one. Fransaskois and immersion students can use a Français 30 course in place of English.

USask's Nursing Prep page asks Saskatchewan students for Foundations of Mathematics 30 or Pre-Calculus 30, with a 70% admission average. Its nursing page says you also need Biology 30 to take the prep courses, and it strongly recommends Chemistry 30. If you take Chemistry 30, you keep Regina open too.

From Ontario, Regina asks for ENG4U, one of MDM4U, MHF4U or MCV4U, SBI4U and SCH4U, each at 70%. USask's Nursing Prep only names MDM4U or MHF4U. Grade 12 chemistry is strongly recommended for USask, because first-year chemistry needs it.

How seats are filled

Regina calls nursing a competitive-entry program. For students still in high school, the SCBScN works out a competitive average using Regina's early conditional admission rules. That average uses an English course, a higher-level math or calculus course and two more approved courses.

USask ranks students twice. First it fills Nursing Prep seats on an ongoing basis until they are full. Then for Years 2 to 4, you need at least 60% in the prep courses, but seats go to the highest averages at each site. USask says the real competitive average may be higher than 60%.

USask has 150 early admission seats across the province. To be considered, you need at least five of the ten prep courses done by December. USask also designates 16.6% of seats for Indigenous candidates who meet the minimum rules. If you aren't admitted, you can raise your average and apply again the next year, and repeated courses count at the highest mark.

The USask prep year, course by course

The pre-professional year is ten 3-credit-unit courses, 30 credit units in total. At USask they include Indigenous studies, biology, nutrition, psychology, English or philosophy, statistics, sociology and human anatomy. Anatomy is NURS 120, offered online through USask.

You can take these courses at USask in Saskatoon or Prince Albert, at the University of Regina or at several regional colleges. USask publishes the matching course at each school. Courses from other provinces can count if they transfer to USask.

Plan to finish the prep courses by April 30 if you want to start Year 2 in September. Keep your marks high in every course, since your average across all ten decides your rank. There is no Casper test for Fall 2027 nursing applicants at USask.

Deadlines that are easy to mix up

Regina's SCBScN window for domestic students runs from October 1 to February 15, and transcripts are due March 15. Regina's pages show these dates without a year. There is one intake each year, in the fall.

USask's Nursing Prep deadline for Fall 2027 is July 15, 2027, and USask makes offers on an ongoing basis until seats fill. Your nursing application comes later, during your prep year. For students now in their prep year, USask lists December 15, 2026 for early admission, with documents by January 15, 2027.

USask's own pages differ on the regular nursing deadline. The admissions page lists April 30, 2027, with documents by June 1, 2027. The College of Nursing's parents page says the regular deadline is March 31. If you are applying for Years 2 to 4, go by the earlier date until USask lines them up.

Where you would live and train

Regina's SCBScN asks you to apply to one site, Regina or Saskatoon. You live in that city for the whole program. Placements can mean travel outside both cities, at your own cost. If you are waitlisted, you may be offered a seat at the other site.

USask offers its nursing years in Saskatoon and Prince Albert. It also teaches by distributed learning at sites including Île-à-la-Crosse, La Ronge, Lloydminster, North Battleford, Swift Current, Weyburn and Yorkton. You list a first-choice site and can name alternates.

For a student who wants to stay near home in a smaller community, USask's site list is a real advantage. For a student who wants nursing from the first week of university, Regina's direct entry is the bigger draw.

What it costs

USask's 2026-27 estimate for Nursing Prep is $8,449 in tuition for Canadian students. With student fees of $1,331.66 and $1,500 for books, it lists a total of $11,280.66. Its estimate for a nursing year is $9,980 in tuition.

Regina's fall 2026 schedule lists nursing at $310.75 per credit hour. Five standard classes in a term come to $5,300.65 with mandatory fees. The SCBScN site adds about $3,000 for required items such as a laptop, and placement travel is extra.

These are 2026-27 figures. The Fall 2027 rates are not posted yet. The Saskatchewan universities guide sets both schools' dates and tuition side by side.

Scholarships and the dates behind them

USask gives 600 Entrance Scholarships of $5,000 each year. Students entering direct-entry colleges, including Arts and Science, are considered automatically by admission average. Nursing Prep sits in Arts and Science. To be considered, apply with your fee and send your transcript and other documents by December 1.

USask's larger Best and Brightest awards need a separate application in PAWS by December 15, after you apply for admission by December 1. That is months before the July 15 Nursing Prep deadline. If money matters, apply early instead of waiting for the summer date.

Regina's automatic entrance scholarships need no form, but you must apply to the SCBScN and send transcripts by March 1. Its application-based awards, which can ask for a personal statement or activities, close March 15. Saskatchewan Polytechnic posts its own awards as well.

After you get in

The SCBScN is cohort based, so you follow a set schedule with little flexibility. Before your first term, you complete checks such as a criminal record check and vulnerable sector search by August 1. Those carry their own fees and must be dated in your year of acceptance.

At USask, an early nursing offer can be withdrawn if your marks drop in the remaining prep courses. You still have to finish all ten. Over half the student contact hours in the USask nursing years happen in labs or clinical settings, and some clinical work can be away from your home site.

How to choose

Pick Regina if you are sure about nursing and want to start it in Year 1. Make sure you take Chemistry 30 and Biology 30, keep 70% in each, and apply by February 15.

Pick USask if you want a broader first year, a wider choice of sites, or more time to decide. Treat the prep year as a competition and keep every mark strong.

You can apply to both, since the dates are months apart. Read the full guides: USask nursing requirements and Regina nursing requirements. School hubs cover housing and aid: USask and Regina.
