Yes—some Canadian universities use Grade 11 marks when enough Grade 12 evidence is not yet available, especially for early or conditional review. That is not a universal formula. Treatment changes by institution, campus, program, applicant curriculum, review round, and the results available at that moment.
Fast answer: Grade 11 marks can help an admissions team make an earlier decision or estimate a missing Grade 12 prerequisite. They do not replace the final Grade 12 prerequisite, diploma, final transcript, or conditions stated in an offer.
Reviewed August 31, 2026 for Fall 2027 planning. This guide uses current first-party university and OUAC sources. Recheck the exact program and applicant portal because a faculty-specific rule can be narrower than university-wide guidance.
Why universities can use Grade 11 results
Applications open before most students have six final Grade 12 U or M results. An early file may contain:
- completed Grade 11 courses;
- a small number of final Grade 12 courses;
- first-semester or non-semestered interim Grade 12 marks;
- courses currently in progress;
- predicted or self-reported results for some applicant curricula; and
- the student's planned second-semester courses.
An institution can use Grade 11 evidence to understand the record while waiting for the corresponding Grade 12 course. It can make an early conditional offer, defer the file to a later round, request more evidence, or decide under a program-specific process.
The key word is conditional. An offer based partly on Grade 11 evidence normally requires later Grade 12 results, completion of the prerequisites and diploma, and satisfaction of the exact conditions in the offer.
Use the admissions-strategy hub to keep this evidence beside extracurricular and grade-context planning. Use the Ontario academic requirements guide for the OSSD, course codes, Top 6 differences, repeats, grade transfers, and final offer conditions.
A current example: U of T Mississauga
U of T Mississauga's admissions FAQ says its selection process considers Grade 11 and Grade 12 academic records. It places emphasis on Grade 11 results when marks in the required number of Grade 12 courses are not yet available.
The same FAQ says early consideration can use Grade 11 marks plus available or predicted Grade 12 marks, while later rounds in March, April, and May use all available evidence. Its current requirements page says that when a Grade 12 prerequisite result is unavailable, the corresponding Grade 11 result can be used.
That temporary evidence does not replace the final Grade 12 prerequisite or the conditions attached to an offer.
This does not create a U of T-wide promise for every division. It is current UTM guidance. An applicant to St. George or UTSC must check that campus, faculty, and program.
A current applicant-type example: Queen's
Queen's high-school applicant guidance says applicants who are not studying in an Ontario school may receive an offer based on Grade 11 marks after submitting their transcript. This is an applicant-type-specific statement, not a Queen's-wide rule for current Ontario high-school applicants. “May” also does not mean every qualified student receives an early offer.
Queen's separate conditional-offer page controls what happens later. For Ontario applicants, it describes the final average calculation, OSSD completion, course-specific minimums, and final grade submission. The applicant's own offer remains the controlling document.
That sequence is the correct mental model:
- Grade 11 evidence can support an early decision.
- The offer lists future conditions.
- Grade 12 and diploma evidence must satisfy those conditions.

Six published patterns to compare comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| Institution | How Grade 11 evidence can enter | What still controls later |
|---|---|---|
| U of T Mississauga | Grade 11 and Grade 12 records are considered; Grade 11 receives emphasis when enough Grade 12 marks are unavailable | More Grade 12 evidence in later rounds and the final prerequisites and conditions |
| Queen's — applicants not studying in an Ontario school | An offer may be based on Grade 11 marks after the applicant submits a transcript | The correct curriculum requirements, later records, and the applicant's offer conditions; Ontario applicants must use the separate Ontario process |
| McMaster | Grade 11 marks may be used in preliminary review when Grade 12 results are unavailable; applicants are not refused based on Grade 11 marks | Midwifery is the stated exception: corresponding Grade 11 prerequisites and minimum grades can affect preliminary eligibility and interview selection when final Grade 12 prerequisites are unavailable |
| Western | Current OUInfo guidance describes Grade 11 and available Grade 12 evidence in early review | Required Grade 12 courses, later review, and final conditions |
| Guelph | When six completed Grade 12 U/M results are unavailable, the calculation can combine completed or in-progress 4U/M courses and completed 3U/M courses, including required subjects | The program's requirements, later available results, and conditions in any offer |
| uOttawa | The current first round relies more on Grade 11 results; round two uses at least two Grade 12 results among six final grades | The third round uses six Grade 12 interim or final grades and all prerequisites |
These rows deliberately do not assign an “early-admission score.” Each institution owns its process, and program-specific supplements or capacity limits can still matter.
Early review is not one national round
“Early admission” is informal language. Universities may publish rolling offers, several named rounds, an early-consideration document date, or no separate early application at all. The ordinary application deadline may still be the only application deadline.
An early decision can be:
- an offer with academic and document conditions;
- no decision yet because more marks are needed;
- a request for another document;
- a refusal under a program's policy; or
- an alternative offer.
Do not assume that another applicant's February result predicts the status of a different program or file.
How Ontario grade transfers fit
The current OUAC 2026–2027 school schedule includes several grade-update points. Schools make early Grade 12 data available in November 2026, add completed and full-year evidence in February 2027, provide another major update in April, and send final results in the summer under the schedule.
OUAC transmits marks; it does not decide how a university evaluates them. The selection rule comes from the university and exact program. A transmitted Grade 11 result can be visible without carrying the same weight in every file.
Applicants outside the current Ontario school workflow can have different transcript, predicted-grade, self-reporting, document, and final-record requirements. Use the university's page for the exact curriculum and applicant type.
Grade 11 prerequisite proxy versus final prerequisite
Suppose a program requires Grade 12 Chemistry, but the applicant is taking it in the second semester. An institution might use Grade 11 Science or Chemistry evidence during an earlier review if its policy allows. That temporary proxy answers “What evidence is available now?” It does not answer “Has the applicant completed the required Grade 12 course?”
Before dropping, switching, or delaying a course, confirm:
- the exact Grade 12 prerequisite code;
- any minimum grade in that subject;
- whether the course must appear in the calculated average;
- when the university expects an interim or final result; and
- the conditions in any offer already received.
Never rely on a Grade 11 proxy to waive a published Grade 12 requirement.
What if Grade 11 marks are lower?
A lower Grade 11 result can reduce the evidence available for an early offer at an institution that uses it. It does not create one Canada-wide rejection.
The most useful response is to:
- keep every required Grade 12 course on schedule;
- understand which Grade 12 results will arrive before each review round;
- improve the underlying knowledge, not only the percentage;
- use an extenuating-circumstances process only when the official eligibility fits;
- monitor the applicant portal for missing documents; and
- maintain balanced program choices rather than treating one competitive route as guaranteed.
If the file remains active, later Grade 12 evidence may give the institution what it needs. Do not send an unsolicited explanation, résumé, or recommendation unless the institution asks for it.
What if Grade 11 marks are stronger?
Strong Grade 11 evidence can support early review, but an applicant should not relax after an offer. Final conditions can require:
- a minimum overall average;
- a minimum in one or more prerequisites;
- completion of the diploma;
- final official records by a stated date;
- completion of a supplement or document checklist; and
- accurate disclosure of course changes.
Read the offer line by line. A scholarship issued with an early offer can also carry conditions separate from admission.
A planning timeline for Fall 2027
Before Grade 12 course selection
- Map prerequisites for every program.
- Protect the Grade 11 courses needed to enter the Grade 12 prerequisites.
- Identify programs that add a supplement, interview, portfolio, audition, or test.
Summer and early fall 2026
- Confirm the final Grade 12 timetable.
- Check application opening and scholarship dates.
- Record which Grade 12 results will be available in each likely review period.
November 2026 to February 2027
- Confirm Ontario school grade transfers or submit the required transcript for another curriculum.
- Complete applications and supplements by their separate deadlines.
- Do not interpret a missing early decision as a final outcome unless the portal says so.
March to May 2027
- Confirm the major Grade 12 updates have been received.
- Read every new checklist item.
- Compare offers by program, cost, conditions, residence, and response date—not only arrival order.
Final results
- Verify the diploma and prerequisite conditions.
- Send final records through the required official route.
- Keep a copy of the offer and proof that conditions were met.
Applicant checklist
- Exact institution, campus, faculty, program, and applicant type recorded
- Current official statement on Grade 11 use saved
- Grade 12 prerequisites and subject minimums confirmed
- Expected grade-transfer or transcript dates recorded
