What ontariocolleges.ca is and who uses it

Ontario Colleges (ontariocolleges.ca) is the central application service for Ontario's public colleges. It's run by OCAS, a non-profit organization. You fill in one application, and it goes to every college you choose.

The Canadian applicant route is for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, including those living outside Canada. That covers most Ontario high school students. It's a separate system from OUAC, which handles Ontario university applications.

Start with the college directory to compare schools before you add choices. Profiles for colleges such as Humber, Seneca, Sheridan, Algonquin and Conestoga link to their official program pages.

How much the application costs

The application fee is $150. It's non-refundable and there are no exemptions. It covers up to five program choices that start in the same academic year, August to July. Changing choices within that cycle costs nothing extra.

Paying the fee doesn't guarantee an offer. Your application isn't active, and nothing goes to the colleges, until it's paid. Once paid, Ontario Colleges sends it to the colleges within two business days.

Other charges can apply. Some schools charge to send a transcript, and Ontario Colleges adds a $5 processing fee to each transcript order. Some colleges and school boards hand out prepaid vouchers at fairs and open houses, which you redeem on the payment page.

  • Pay online by Visa, Visa Debit, Mastercard or American Express.
  • Pay by phone with a credit card, or mail a certified cheque or money order.
  • Budget for a new $150 fee if you later apply for a different academic year.

Choosing and changing your five program choices

You get up to five program choices, with a maximum of three at any one college. You can't pay extra or submit a second application for more. All choices must start in the same academic year.

You can edit choices any time in that year. Log in, resume your application and select Edit Programs. Removing a choice tells that college you're no longer interested. Changes made after the equal consideration date can affect how colleges consider you.

Spread your choices wisely. If you're aiming at a program that fills fast, pair it with an open program you'd genuinely attend. The programming college programs guide shows how to compare credentials before you choose.

The February 1 equal consideration date

For Fall 2027 programs, apply and pay on or before February 1, 2027. Every application received by then is considered on an equal basis. After that date, colleges consider applicants first come, first served until programs fill.

February 1 isn't a hard deadline for most programs. Many stay open, and colleges keep accepting applications to open programs until classes start. Use the program search on ontariocolleges.ca to check which programs are still open.

Ontario Colleges says site traffic peaks just before February 1. Aim to finish in the fall or early winter so a login problem doesn't cost you.

Highly competitive programs and extra requirements

A highly competitive program has more qualified applicants than fall seats. You must apply by February 1 to be considered. Ontario Colleges names nursing, health sciences, computer science and IT, engineering, media and culinary arts among its examples.

Seats go first to permanent residents of Ontario, then to permanent residents of other provinces and territories, then to applicants from other countries. Some programs are open only to Ontario residents. Colleges can also set subject prerequisites, minimum grades, portfolios or essays.

Sheridan's Honours Bachelor of Animation requires a portfolio with an assessment fee. Instructions and the due date appear in your Sheridan Application Portal. Selection combines your top six senior credits with the portfolio result. Algonquin's Practical Nursing sets 65% minimums in four named subjects, and says eligibility may be decided by academic testing, for which it charges a fee.

Transcripts and supporting documents

If you're taking at least one Ontario high school course, tell your guidance counsellor you're applying. Most high schools send your grades to OCAS automatically through the year. You still have to check them.

Former Ontario high school students order transcripts inside the application, and fees vary by school. Out-of-province schools and Ontario private postsecondary institutions must send official transcripts to OCAS directly. OCAS won't process transcripts you email yourself.

Colleges can also ask for test results, proof of citizenship or residency, portfolios or certifications. If you studied outside Canada, see the credential evaluation guide.

  • Check your grades under Docs in early December, early March, mid-May and mid-July.
  • Tell your guidance counsellor right away if a mark is missing or wrong.
  • If you take night, summer or online courses, ask that school to send your results to OCAS.

How international applicants apply

If you're not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you apply as an international applicant. That includes students already in Canada on a study permit. The five-choice Canadian application doesn't apply to you.

The route depends on the college. Some, including Conestoga, Mohawk, Canadore and La Cité, use the OCAS International Application Service. Others, including Humber, Seneca, Sheridan, George Brown and Algonquin, take international applications on their own websites.

You submit a separate application to each institution, and each sets its own number of choices. Fees vary by college. For English proficiency, check the college: Ontario Colleges names TOEFL, IELTS and CAEL but says each college sets the test and score. Priority rules for highly competitive programs also put international applicants last. Read the international students guide for study permit planning.

When offers arrive and what they mean

Colleges can start sending Fall 2027 offers on November 1, 2026. They keep sending them until programs fill or waitlists form. Offers appear under Offers on your dashboard, sometimes with a delay while the college transmits them.

A regular offer means you've met every requirement. A conditional offer lists what you still need to finish, such as final Grade 12 marks, and the date to prove it. An alternate offer places you in a similar program. A waitlist means you qualify but the program is full.

Ontario Colleges doesn't receive refusals or waitlist decisions. If you're waiting, contact the college directly.

Accepting an offer and paying the deposit

To accept, log in, select View Offers, choose the offer and select Accept. You can hold only one accepted offer at a time. Accepting a new offer cancels the old one automatically, and the other colleges are notified.

You can switch while an offer is still current, but only once per day. You can't defer an offer. For Fall 2027, accept by May 1, 2027. Colleges set their own deadline for offers made after that date.

The tuition deposit is paid to the college. OCAS says colleges can charge up to $500, it counts toward tuition, and it's due in mid-June at most colleges. The exact amount and date come from the college, as the table above shows.

  • Read every condition and deadline in the offer before you accept.
  • Tell your first-choice college you're still interested if you accept a lower choice first.
  • Ask the college whether accepting elsewhere affects a waitlist spot.

Mature students, university and transfer pathways

Colleges may grant mature student status to applicants over 19 without an Ontario high school diploma, CAEC or GED. Each college decides, so contact it directly. The mature students guide covers how that works in practice.

College and university applications run on separate systems. You can hold a college offer and a university offer at the same time without one affecting the other. See the Ontario university application process for OUAC.

Many students start at college and move on later. The college transfer guide explains how diploma credits can count toward a degree.

What parents should know and do

The account belongs to your child. Create one account only, using an email they check. Ontario Colleges will discuss the status of an application only with the applicant, so they'll need to make those calls.

Plan for three separate costs: the $150 application fee, any transcript fees, and the tuition deposit in June. OSAP grants and loans can cover eligible full-time and part-time college programs. Read the OSAP guide and the scholarship application guide.

Your most useful jobs are the calendar and the checks. Put February 1 and May 1 on the family calendar, and ask to see the grade updates. The parents' guide to university applications covers the university side.
