McMaster Health Sciences (BHSc) supplementary application 2027: questions, deadline, scoring and the rules on outside help
Every applicant to McMaster's Honours Health Sciences Program (BHSc) must complete a supplementary application. It is a set of written questions. McMaster will post the 2027 questions on Tuesday, December 1, 2026. The answers are due in early or mid February 2027, inside a short portal window. McMaster scores your answers and weighs that score with your grades. Your answers must be entirely your own. McMaster bans AI, admissions consultants and talking about your answers with others.

What the BHSc supplementary application is
The supplementary application is a required part of applying to McMaster's Honours Health Sciences Program. McMaster calls it mandatory. It says the application is considered together with your grade point average, and that a high average alone does not guarantee a spot.
McMaster says the supplementary application lets applicants show their critical thinking skills and how they reflect on themselves. In its FAQ, the program adds that it shows things grades don't, like your experiences and how you think. This page covers only the supplementary application. For courses, the 90% minimum and tuition, read our McMaster Health Sciences admission requirements page.

Who has to complete it
All Level I applicants complete it. Level I is the entry route for students coming straight from high school. McMaster says the program gets over 8,000 applicants a year for only 240 spots.
Your answers are only reviewed if you meet the grade and course rules first. That means a minimum 90% average and the required Grade 12 courses: English, Biology, Chemistry, one of Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors or Data Management, one 4U or 4M course that is not math, science or technology, and one more Grade 12 U or M course.
Level II transfer students also write a supplementary application, on a later timeline. This guide is for high school students applying for Fall 2027.

The 2027 questions and format
McMaster's 2027 questions file for Level I and Level II applicants currently says the questions are coming on December 1, 2026. The supplementary application page gives the same date: Tuesday, December 1, 2026.
As of October 8, 2026, McMaster has not posted the number of 2027 questions, any choice between questions, or character or word limits. We won't guess them, and we won't repeat an older year's format as if it were current. Check the official questions file on or after December 1, 2026, and read the instruction email McMaster sends to the address on your OUAC application.
What McMaster does say about format is useful. The answers are written and submitted through an online portal. Portal access is time limited. McMaster also says you can cite sources informally, and you should keep your name and identifying details out of your answers.

Fall 2027 deadline and portal window
McMaster's list of supplementary applications says the Honours Health Sciences supplementary application is due in early or mid February 2027. The exact days of the portal window aren't posted yet. The BHSc page still lists the OUAC deadline, the instructions email, portal access and offer dates as not yet posted for 2027.
Apply on OUAC by the Ontario deadline for current high school students. Our Ontario university application deadlines page tracks that date. Then watch your email.
The window is short. For Fall 2025 entry, the last full timeline we could confirm on McMaster's page, the instructions email went out on January 30, 2025, and the portal was open from February 3 to 6, 2025. That was a different cycle, so treat it only as a sign of how short the window can be. McMaster says the deadline is firm and it gives no extensions if you miss it.

How McMaster scores it
McMaster says faculty, staff and fourth-year (Level IV) students in the program review and score the supplementary applications. Each application is scored by more than one reviewer. If reviewers' scores differ a lot, McMaster adds another reviewer.
Grades and the supplementary score are the only things McMaster uses to decide. It does not review any extra material, so don't send a resume, CV or reference letter. McMaster says extracurricular activities matter, but it doesn't use them as a factor because access to them varies so widely.
McMaster also says reviewers ignore a few small typos and focus on substance, unless errors get in the way of understanding. It does not publish a rubric, a weighting between grades and the supplementary score, or a cutoff score.
Applicants in the equitable admissions streams for Black and Latin American or Latinx students have their supplementary applications scored by a panel of Black or Latin American or Latinx students, faculty, staff and alumni. McMaster says these applicants meet the same academic and supplementary requirements, and there is no quota.

McMaster's rules on outside help, consultants and AI
McMaster is direct about this. Its FAQ says: "Your responses to the questions must be entirely your own. Discussion with others, including current program students, is not permitted. Posting answers to third party websites or online forums is strictly prohibited. Use of admissions consultants is prohibited."
It goes on: "Posting your answers on the internet, whether draft or final, use of paid admissions consultants, plagiarism, use of generative artificial intelligence, or otherwise working with others to prepare your responses is not permitted and may result in removal from the applicant pool or withdrawal of an offer of admission."
McMaster treats a breach as a breach of academic integrity. It can remove you from the applicant pool, or from the program if it finds out after you start. McMaster also says companies that claim "insider information" about its admissions are not endorsed, and their claims are unfounded. Students who turn out to be inconsistent with the person shown in the application will be asked to withdraw.
In plain terms: no ChatGPT or other AI tools, no tutors or consultants shaping your answers, no swapping ideas with friends or current BHSc students, and no posting drafts online.

What McMaster itself suggests
McMaster posts a short list of its own tips on the supplementary application page. They are quoted here as McMaster wrote them.
- "Review the questions and their intended meaning in advance"
- "Take the time to think deeply about what you want to say"
- "Be genuine to who you are and your life perspectives when responding"
- "Where appropriate, draw on your life experiences when answering"
- "Express yourself in a clear and compelling way"

Practical rules that trip people up
Don't put your name in your answers. McMaster also asks you not to give so much detail that someone could find out who you are with a web search.
If you have a technical problem, contact the Honours Health Sciences Program helpdesk before the deadline. Staff answer during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Don't leave submission to the last hour of a short window.
Keep the email address on your OUAC application current and check your spam folder around January and February. McMaster sends submission instructions by email.

Where McMaster's pages differ
McMaster's own pages don't agree on two dates. The Level I admission page says questions are posted in September. The supplementary application page and the 2027 questions file say December 1, 2026. Plan for December 1, 2026, since that is the specific date, and check the questions file in September too.
The Level I page says applicants get the instructions email in January. The equitable admissions page says early February. Watch your inbox from January on. If you're unsure, contact the program directly.

Indigenous applicants and equitable admissions
Indigenous applicants who want to be considered through the Facilitated Indigenous Admissions Program apply to the program the usual way, complete the same supplementary application, and send a separate self-identification application by the OUAC deadline.
Black and Latin American or Latinx applicants also apply the usual way. McMaster says the email with supplementary instructions includes a link to a form where you can opt in to the equitable admissions process. You can choose one stream, both or neither.

Other McMaster programs with a supplement
McMaster lists supplementary applications for several other first-year programs, each with its own format and deadline. Engineering, Computer Science, iBioMed and the Bachelor of Technology share one video-based application. Nursing uses Casper. Arts and Science and Integrated Science use written forms.
See our McMaster Engineering supplementary application guide for that table, our Casper test guide for Nursing, and the supplementary applications chapter to compare schools.
For parents
You can help with logistics: the OUAC deadline, the email address, a quiet place and a working computer during the February window. You can't help with the answers. McMaster bans discussion with others and paid consultants, and a breach can cost your child the offer.
With 240 seats and over 8,000 applicants, many students above 90% won't get in. Build a balanced list with other health and life science programs. Our McMaster Health Sciences pathway shows the planning steps.
