The two facilities

The David Braley Athletic & Recreation Centre (DBARC) is in R Wing at Fennell Campus. It has three gymnasiums, a fitness centre with weights and cardio, a multi-purpose studio, two outdoor basketball courts, social spaces and a Booster Juice. Mohawk calls it its second LEED Gold certified building.

The Stoney Creek Fitness Centre has weights, cardio equipment and accessible showers. It shares its space with the Mohawk Students' Association office, which runs a hygiene station with free products. Mohawk lists only these two facilities.

Who gets in, and what it costs

Full-time, fee-paying students get a free membership while they're enrolled in the current semester. You check in at the front desk each visit. A DBARC membership covers the fitness centre, gyms, outdoor courts and studio. Stoney Creek covers the weights, cardio equipment and showers.

The free membership is paid for through your fees. Mohawk's 2026-27 fee table charges every post-secondary student at its Hamilton-area campuses an Athletics and Recreation fee of $70.15 a semester ($140.30 for two) and a DBARC building fee of $101.00 a semester ($202.00 for two). Students can't opt out of compulsory ancillary fees.

  • Buy a paid membership at the DBARC or Stoney Creek front desk.
  • Borrow basketballs, soccer balls, badminton and cricket gear at the DBARC front desk.
  • Living in residence? There's no gym in the building, so residents use DBARC.

Intramurals, extramurals and drop-in

Intramurals are the casual option. Mohawk's athletics page lists intramural basketball, volleyball, cricket, dodgeball and indoor soccer "this year" without naming the year. Drop-in recreation runs Monday to Friday.

Extramurals are a step up. You play tournaments against other Ontario colleges without the varsity commitment. The same page lists coed volleyball, indoor cricket and powerlifting, but it labels that list as the 2025-26 offer. Check the Mountaineers recreation page for this year's sports and the current fitness class schedule.

Mohawk Mountaineers varsity teams

Mohawk's varsity teams are the Mountaineers. They compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). All teams are based at Fennell. Basketball and volleyball play in the DBARC gym, soccer at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School and softball at the Mohawk Sports Park.

Mohawk's athletics page gives two team counts. One paragraph says nine varsity teams across men's and women's programs. The next says 10 league teams: men's and women's soccer, volleyball and basketball, women's softball and a lacrosse sixes program. Lacrosse sixes is an OCAA exploratory sport for 2026-27. Curling and cross country are tournament sports with men's and women's teams, ending with a CCAA national championship.

Varsity athletes balance road games across Ontario, frequent practices and team meetings with their studies. For tryouts and team contacts, use the Mountaineers site or email the department.

Who to contact

General athletics and recreation questions go to athleticsandrecreation@mohawkcollege.ca. DBARC questions go to dbarc@mohawkcollege.ca. Mohawk's own page points to mohawkmountaineers.com for hours and membership details, so treat that site as the current source.
