For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities with an Ethiopian school-leaving credential. Confirm its exact name and exam year first. Universities use both current and older labels. For undergraduate funding, UBC International Scholars is a separate route from UBC's current Mastercard master's program. Neither eligibility nor strong grades guarantee an award.

Reviewed October 18, 2026. The table below uses current university rules, mostly without a named intake year. Published 2027 scholarship dates are labelled. Older certificate names, pending award amounts and unresolved wording appear where they affect your decision.

Which Ethiopian certificate do you hold?

Start with the title printed on your final exam record. U of T names the Ethiopian Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination. It calls the earlier award the Ethiopian Higher Education (University) Entrance Examination and labels that route pre-2022. This distinction matters when an application menu still offers only an older exam name.

The official exam service, EAES, also separates EUEE from ESSLCE in its own exam list. Its dates use the Ethiopian calendar. Don't compare those year numbers with a Canadian page's calendar year without checking which calendar is meant. Include the sitting date as it appears on your record and explain it when asked.

Some admissions pages still say EUEE or use another school-leaving title. That wording doesn't establish that your newer award is rejected. It also doesn't prove the two awards receive identical treatment. Send the university the printed credential title and your graduation year. Ask it to confirm the correct application category and the documents it needs.

Keep the reply with your application records. For example, a new leaving-exam certificate and your school transcript may use different names for the same subject. Send both titles in your question. Don't edit the issued document to make them match. If a translation is needed, ask what form the university accepts and who may prepare it.

Your country of citizenship and school curriculum can differ. If your school offers the International Baccalaureate diploma, called IB, or Cambridge A-levels, use that curriculum's requirements. Don't select Ethiopia's national exam route merely because you live in Addis Ababa. The university reviews the record you've studied, including any earlier schools or university attendance.

Read the degree rule after the country row. Laurier links functions and calculus to the natural-stream Grade 12 Mathematics exam. It lists the relevant Grade 12 sciences by subject. A high overall result won't replace a missing required subject. Ask about your stream before choosing an Engineering or science program on the form.

Manitoba shows why a minimum needs a label. Its University 1 route uses a 70% equivalent average and no required course below 60%. Direct-entry Engineering instead uses an 80% equivalent average and a 70% floor in its required subjects. Those standards belong to Manitoba's assessment. They aren't a formula for converting every Ethiopian exam score.

There isn't a verified national EUEE-to-Canadian percentage table to apply here. Even a university's own conversion chart serves its own review. Keep the original marks on your record. Don't divide a total by a guessed maximum, call it a Canadian average, and use that figure to judge every program's chance of admission.

Make a subject check for each degree before you rank it. Write the required Canadian course beside the Ethiopian exam subject you think meets it. Put a question mark beside any gap. Then ask that university to check the gap. The Engineering requirements guide can help you understand why the exact mathematics and science content matters.

Prepare school records and English evidence

Laurier asks for transcripts covering Grades 9 to 12 and your enrolled subjects if Grade 12 is unfinished. Its final-condition instructions ask for an English-issued exam certificate sent by the named exam agency. Because the page retains older names, ask which current EAES service and delivery route will satisfy that condition for your certificate.

EAES publishes authentication and verification services. Those services confirm a record; they don't replace the Canadian university's admission decision. Ask the university who must send the document before paying for a service. Use the credential-evaluation guide to understand the difference between official records and an external report. Order a report only when the receiving school requests it.

English has two checks. A degree may require a senior English subject, while the university separately asks for proof that you can study in English. U of T explicitly distinguishes these requirements. Laurier requires proficiency evidence from its Ethiopian national-curriculum route. Saint Mary's country row also requires a test. Check accepted evidence before booking and sending a score.

Don't assume an English-medium school letter creates an automatic waiver. Give the university your full schooling history and use its own exemption process. If your result won't arrive by an award's language deadline, ask the school how it handles that situation. An admission application and a scholarship application can have different document deadlines.

Fully funded undergraduate scholarships: check the level first

The phrase “fully funded” should prompt a cost check, not a promise. Some awards cover tuition alone. Others include housing or a living allowance. A benefit list for a master's scholarship doesn't fund a new bachelor's student. Read the entry level before spending time on an application that cannot accept you.

UBC's current Mastercard application is a Winter 2027 master's route. It requires a completed bachelor's degree and an eligible master's program. The initial expression of interest was due September 6, 2026, which has passed. Later faculty-application steps are for selected candidates. They aren't a fresh opening for an Ethiopian high-school applicant to enter undergraduate study.

UBC's graduate support page lists tuition and books, along with flights, immigration support, room and board, a living stipend and health insurance. That describes the graduate award's scope. It isn't evidence of a current undergraduate Mastercard intake. Compare the current Canadian partners and levels in Mastercard Foundation Scholars in Canada. Check a partner's current application page rather than relying on an old scholar's story.

For September 2027 undergraduate entry, UBC International Scholars is a current option for eligible international applicants, including Ethiopians. It requires direct entry from secondary school into a first undergraduate degree. Outstanding academics and community leadership matter, but so does significant financial need. Your family must provide evidence of its finances. Admission and award selection remain separate reviews.

Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow is an award category within that program. You don't gain a second chance by treating the name as a separate open scholarship. UBC assesses the support you need after considering family resources. Read the final award terms to learn what is funded and what you'll still need to pay.

For this 2027 cycle, apply for UBC admission first. Both admission and the completed award application are due November 15, 2026. Arrange a school or eligible non-profit nomination and a different teacher referee early. Required documents and the English standard are due January 31, 2027. Nursing and several other named degrees aren't eligible for these awards.

If your final school certificate won't exist by January 31, UBC asks you to send it as soon as it becomes available. That instruction doesn't remove the other steps or the English deadline. Tell admissions which record is still due and when your school expects it. Keep using the award's document date rather than assuming the general admission email gives you extra time.

UBC's merit-award page is a different source. Its IMES range of CAN$10,000 to CAN$25,000 per year is labelled 2026-27; the Fall 2027 value is pending. International Scholars applicants aren't considered for those merit awards. Don't add the two amounts together to create a funding package that UBC hasn't offered you.

Pearson dates have already passed at the first stages

U of T's Pearson award covers tuition and books, incidental fees and full residence support for four years. The September 2027 school-nomination deadline was October 9, 2026. Its admission deadline was October 16. Both have passed as of October 18, 2026. The November 6 scholarship and document deadline serves candidates who met the earlier requirements.

If you weren't nominated and didn't apply by those dates, don't build your budget around starting Pearson now. If you did complete the early steps, follow your assigned application instructions. The listed coverage doesn't itself promise airfare or every personal expense. Compare the written award terms with your own costs before deciding that no other funds are needed.

Tuition, living costs and scholarship evidence

Carleton's current international viewbook gives actual 2027/2028 and 2028/2029 tuition figures. Its Arts and Science group is CAN$39,000 a year. The listed business group is CAN$45,000, and Engineering and computing groups are CAN$55,000. Use the program's exact group. These figures illustrate one university's costs, rather than a Canadian average or an Ethiopian fee category.

The same table estimates CAN$2,500 in miscellaneous fees for most listed groups and CAN$4,300 for Nursing. Housing and food need a separate budget. Use Carleton tuition and fees to examine those costs. Then compare the full program length with confirmed renewable support. A one-time award won't reduce every future year by the same amount.

Ask your family what it can pay if no award is offered. If that amount is zero, treat an unfunded offer as a decision that still needs funding. Don't pay a large deposit based on a hoped-for scholarship. Read the offer's payment and refund terms first, and ask the university about the order of award and deposit decisions.

IRCC currently requires CAN$23,448 for one person's first-year living expenses outside Quebec for applications from September 1, 2026. Tuition and transportation come on top. The required amount can change before you apply in 2027. Quebec uses its own financial requirements. You must show funds without relying on work in Canada and explain how you'll fund later years.

A scholarship letter can be part of that proof. It needs to show the amount, period and covered costs. If it pays tuition only, prove the remaining living and travel costs. IRCC assesses both availability and source of funds. Its bank-statement example covers six months, including the application month or the month before, with records showing where income came from.

An offer and an award letter don't issue a study permit. Read IRCC's document checklist and follow the school's process for a provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL, unless an exemption applies. The current page explains 2026 validity. Specific 2027 cap-year validity dates remain pending. Check that rule again before submitting your permit application.

Build a shortlist you can act on

Choose a few degrees that match your actual subjects and affordable backup budget. Get written answers about a newer certificate name before paying application fees. Keep the school's application deadline separate from final records and award deadlines. The international-family guide can help your parent assemble funding evidence. Use the application-deadline guide to compare the next steps, then verify each date with the university.
