The short version

Moving to Ontario does not double your first-year bill. Using 2026-27 prices, a Nova Scotia Arts student at Dalhousie pays about $25,100 for tuition, fees and a double room with meals. The same student would pay about $26,900 at Queen's and about $24,700 at McMaster before its own fees. All three totals are our calculation.

Residence is the biggest single cost at every school. Tuition is lower in Ontario for an out-of-province arts student than Dalhousie's sticker price. The Nova Scotia bursary then pulls Dalhousie back down.

What changes the picture most is what each figure leaves out. Our McMaster total has no ancillary fees. None of the totals include books, a laptop, phone or travel home. For a student from Nova Scotia, flights or long drives to Ontario add a real cost that staying in Halifax avoids.

Dalhousie tuition and the Nova Scotia bursary

Dalhousie charges by billing hour, and the rate follows each course's faculty. Halifax Arts courses are $301 per billing hour in 2026-27. A full year of 30 billing hours is $9,030, by our calculation. Take a Science elective and that course is charged at the Science rate instead.

Dalhousie's fee schedule gives a fall estimate of $5,798.05 and a winter estimate of $4,998.26 for a 15-hour Arts term. Those include society and incidental fees. Added together, the year is $10,796.31, by our calculation.

Nova Scotia gives its residents a bursary when they study at a Nova Scotia university. Where tuition is charged by course, it is $128.30 for each 3-credit-hour course. Ten courses make $1,283. You count as a resident if you went to high school in Nova Scotia right before university, among other routes. The bursary does not follow you to Ontario.

Ontario tuition at out-of-province rates

Ontario universities charge Canadians from other provinces a separate domestic rate. At Queen's, out-of-province Arts and Science students pay $258.76 per unit in 2026-27. For 30 units that is $7,762.80. With the student activity levy and ancillary fees, Queen's lists $9,329.31.

McMaster's 2026-27 schedule lists $7,715.70 for an out-of-province Level 1 arts or science student. The schedule's title calls the figures proposed. McMaster's supplementary fees are separate, so our McMaster total understates the real bill.

Program choice matters. Queen's Commerce, Engineering and Computing cost more than Arts and Science, and so do Dalhousie's Science, Commerce and Engineering courses. Use the same program at each school when you compare.

If you are not in Arts

Dalhousie's 2026-27 rates per billing hour are $341.50 for Science and Computer Science, $344.60 for Commerce and $373.40 for Engineering. For 30 hours that is $10,245 in Science, $10,338 in Commerce and $11,202 in Engineering, by our calculation, before fees and the bursary.

At Queen's, out-of-province Computing students pay $8,967.90 for 30 units in 2026-27. Commerce is $20,786.37 for 33 units in Years 1 and 2, far above the Arts and Science rate. Engineering is charged per unit too, at a higher rate.

So for Commerce, Dalhousie is much cheaper than Queen's. For Science or Computing, the gap is smaller and residence decides more of the total. Run the same sum with your own program's rate before you compare schools.

Who gets the Nova Scotia bursary

You count as a Nova Scotia resident for the bursary if you have a Nova Scotia student loan. Without a loan, you count if you went to high school in Nova Scotia right before university, or if you lived in Nova Scotia when you applied.

The bursary is paid even if you also get scholarships or other bursaries. Where a university charges by course, as Dalhousie does, it is $128.30 for each 3-credit-hour course, so a lighter load means a smaller bursary.

The province pays it only at a Nova Scotia university. If you choose Queen's or McMaster, that $1,283 disappears from your budget, which is why we show it as a separate row.

Residence and meal plans

Dalhousie's Howe Hall double is $9,380 for 2026-27. Traditional residences need a meal plan, and the Freedom Plan is $6,232. Together that is $15,612, by our calculation. Dalhousie's own estimate for residence with meals runs from about $12,877 to $16,792, depending on the room.

Queen's lists a double room with its required meal plan at a total of $17,618.80 for 2026-27. That figure already includes an $805 deposit, a $120 residence society fee, $150 in flex dollars and $91.80 for insurance.

McMaster's traditional double room is $9,220 for the eight-month year. Its page shows no year beside the room fees. Every resident must buy a meal plan, and the C plan, the default if you don't choose, is $7,740 for 2026-27. Together that is $16,960, by our calculation.

How we built the totals

Each total adds tuition, the fees the school lists with its tuition example, and a double room with the required meal plan. For Dalhousie we also subtracted the Nova Scotia bursary. We used Arts or Arts and Science so the programs match as closely as possible.

Dalhousie's total is $10,796.31 in tuition and fees, minus $1,283, plus $15,612, which is $25,125.31. Queen's is $9,329.31 plus $17,618.80, which is $26,948.11. McMaster is $7,715.70 plus $9,220 plus $7,740, which is $24,675.70 before its own fees.

These are estimates from published 2026-27 prices, not quotes. Fall 2027 tuition and residence rates are not set yet at any of the three schools. Rebuild the table next year with the new rates before you decide.

Scholarships and dates that change the math

Dalhousie's entrance scholarship application for September 2027 closes February 15, 2027, and offers go out in March 2027. Early entrance awards must be accepted by January 31, 2027. Apply early so your file is complete before those dates.

Dalhousie asks you to accept your offer by May 1, 2027 and to apply for guaranteed residence by May 15, 2027. Most Dalhousie programs keep reading applications while space remains, but Nursing and some health programs close February 15, 2027.

Queen's Arts and Science applications are due March 1, 2027. Ontario schools run their own entrance awards with their own dates. See the Ontario university deadlines guide for application dates. A strong award at one school can erase the gaps in our table.

Costs our totals leave out

Travel is the big one. A student from Nova Scotia at an Ontario school pays to get there in September and home at holidays. The totals above also leave out books, a laptop, a phone plan and personal spending.

McMaster's ancillary fees are not in our McMaster figure. Dalhousie and Queen's figures include their listed fees. If you want an exact comparison, add McMaster's supplementary fees from its fee pages.

Our table covers first year only. Costs in later years depend on where you live after residence, so price housing in Halifax, Kingston or Hamilton when you get there.

How to decide

If cost is the main factor, Dalhousie and the Ontario schools are close in first year, and the Nova Scotia bursary helps Dalhousie. Travel and later-year rent can tip it either way.

If you want a program Dalhousie doesn't offer, or a specific Ontario school, the extra cost may be small. Compare entrance awards before you rule anything out.
