OSAP for mature students
age, independence and grants
Yes. OSAP is open to Ontario residents of any age, so you can apply as a mature student. For 2026-27, age alone doesn't make you independent. A single student usually needs 4 years out of high school for federal aid, 6 for Ontario aid, or 24 months of full-time work in a row.

Can you apply for OSAP as a mature student?
Yes. Ontario's own wording is that OSAP is open to Ontario residents of any age. You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person. There is no upper age cut-off in the published list. You also don't need to be a recent high school graduate. Adults use the same OSAP application as students coming straight from Grade 12.
More about can you apply for OSAP as a mature student
Age isn't on the list of reasons you may not qualify. That list includes a defaulted student loan and grant or bursary overpayments. It also names bankruptcy, a consumer proposal or a consolidation order. Missed academic progress rules count too. So does income reported to OSAP that is very different from what you reported to the Canada Revenue Agency. If any of these fit your past, ask your school's financial aid office before you count on aid.
There is also a lifetime limit. Full-time students can receive student aid for up to 340 weeks. Doctoral students can receive up to 400 weeks. Students with a disability may receive up to 520 weeks. If you used OSAP years ago, those earlier weeks still count. Ask your aid office how many weeks you have left.
Mature status for admission doesn't make you independent
This is the mix-up that costs adult applicants the most time. A university decides if you're a mature applicant. OSAP decides if you're a dependent or independent student. The two tests use different facts. You can pass one and fail the other.
More about mature status for admission doesn't make you independent
York and TMU both use age 21 by December 31 of the start year. Both also ask for at least two years away from school. OSAP doesn't look at either rule. On the 2026-27 full-time form, a single student needs 4 years out of high school for federal aid and 6 for Ontario aid. The other time route is 24 months of full-time work in a row. A 21-year-old who left high school at 18 may be mature at York and still dependent for OSAP.
Being dependent means OSAP asks for your parents' information. That can feel strange when you've lived on your own for years. Ontario does have an extenuating parental circumstances request for a serious family breakdown. It isn't a shortcut for adults who simply support themselves. Read the OSAP family-status guide if separated parents or a guardian are part of your story.
How OSAP counts your years out of high school
The form asks when you last attended high school full-time. It then asks if you'll have been out at least 6 years, and then at least 4, as of the start of your study period. The count runs to the start of your study period, not to the day you apply. A student starting in January can be in a different position from one who started the September before.
More about how OSAP counts your years out of high school
Full-time high school means taking 60% or more of a regular high school program. The 2026-27 form adds one line that matters for adults. It says this does not include completing high school as a mature student. So finishing your diploma later through adult courses doesn't count as full-time high school on the form. Your clock runs from the last time you were a full-time high school student. Ask the aid office if your record is mixed.
Use OSAP's academic year to find the right application. The 2026-27 year covers study periods starting from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027. A program starting in January 2027 uses the 2026-27 application. A Fall 2027 start uses the 2027-28 application, which wasn't published when we checked on October 30, 2026.
The 24-month full-time work route
Work history can make you independent sooner than the 6-year clock. The 2026-27 form asks if you expect to have worked full-time for at least 24 months in a row by the time your study period starts. If you answer yes, the form doesn't send you to the parent section.
More about the 24-month full-time work route
Full-time work has a set meaning. You must be in paid work for at least 30 hours a week. You also can't be a full-time student at the same time, in high school, college or university. The form tells you not to count months of full-time study. Part-time jobs, unpaid work and stretches with gaps may not add up to 24 months in a row. Keep pay stubs, records of employment or a letter from each employer in case the aid office asks.
Four to six years out: the federal-only gap
Many adults in their early twenties fall into this middle band. At 4 years out you're independent for the federal calculation. You aren't independent for the Ontario calculation until 6 years. The form treats these as two calculations inside one OSAP application.
More about four to six years out: the federal-only gap
If you're in this band, the form gives you a choice. You can tick a box saying you don't want to give parent information. The form spells out the cost. You won't be considered for the Ontario portion of the integrated student loan, the Ontario grant or Student Access Guarantee funding. That can be a large share of the package. Run the numbers both ways in the OSAP Aid Estimator before you tick that box.
If you're married, common-law or raising children
Marriage changes the questions. If you're married or common-law, OSAP asks for your spouse's information instead of your parents'. To apply, you'll need your spouse's SIN and tax information. Ontario counts you as common-law after at least 3 years of living together without a break. You also count if you're in a relationship of some permanence and share a natural or adopted child. The weekly maximum for a married, common-law or sole-support student is $875 in 2026-27. A single student with no dependants has a $530 maximum. Ontario says you may get more aid than these amounts, and you'll know how much when your full-time application is processed.
More about if you're married, common-law or raising children
A sole-support parent has a dependent child living with them at least half of the study period. They have never married, or are separated, divorced or widowed. Ontario says the expected student contribution can be waived if you have one or more children. The federal grant for full-time students with dependants is listed at up to $280 per child per month. OSAP can also help with child care for both full-time and part-time students with children.
If you're separated, divorced or widowed with no children living with you, the form has its own question. If you answer yes, the form also skips the parent section. Proof of your marital status is listed in the required documents. Our family-status guide covers custody proof and parent sections in more detail.
What OSAP counts from your savings and income
OSAP is needs-based. It compares allowed school and living costs with what you and your family are expected to put in. For 2026-27, Ontario lists the student contribution as $3,600. It can be waived in some situations, such as having children. A contribution may also be expected from your assets or your spouse's.
More about what OSAP counts from your savings and income
Adults often have savings a teenager doesn't, so read the asset rules closely. The form asks for the savings part of bank accounts, including a TFSA or a First Home Savings Account. GICs, stocks, mutual funds and cryptocurrency count too. It tells you not to report your vehicle, your home, an RESP or an RDSP. RRSPs have their own question, which asks for the net value. The form also notes the Lifelong Learning Plan, which lets you borrow from an RRSP for full-time study.
Income during your study period is reported too, including Employment Insurance and other government income. If you receive social assistance, Ontario says to report it on the application and tell your caseworker how much OSAP you get. Using money from an RESP won't change your OSAP amount.
Is there an OSAP mature student grant?
None of the official grant lists we checked includes a grant named for mature students. You don't apply for a separate adult grant. One OSAP application considers you for grants and a loan together. The federal full-time grant is open to students in financial need, and its limits depend on family income and family size. The table uses the previous year's gross family income. For a family of one, the August 1, 2026 table gives the maximum grant below $38,474. No grant is paid at $69,987 or more.
More about is there an OSAP mature student grant
The two governments show different yearly limits for that grant. Canada's page says up to $4,200 a year until the end of 2026-27. Ontario's 2026-27 list says $6,300, subject to a weekly maximum. Your OSAP assessment decides which figure applies to you. Ontario also moved more of its own aid from grants to loans for programs starting on or after August 1, 2026. An estimate made before that change may not match your 2026-27 package.
If you lost your job, look at Better Jobs Ontario as well. It's a separate Ontario training program, not part of OSAP. It funds programs of up to 2 years. It offers up to $28,000 for training of one year or less and up to $35,000 for longer programs. You apply through an Employment Ontario service provider. It supports the most cost-effective training option. Since it funds programs of 2 years or less, a four-year degree is outside its range.
Part-time OSAP while you keep working
Many adults study part-time so they can keep a job. For OSAP, part-time means 20% to 59% of a full course load. Your school sets what a full load is. Part-time aid uses its own application, and your living expenses aren't covered. Child care can still be covered.
More about part-time OSAP while you keep working
The 2026-27 yearly maximums are $2,520 for the federal part-time grant and $500 for the Ontario part-time grant. The federal grant for part-time students with dependants goes up to $2,688. Your part-time Canada Student Loan balance can't go over $10,000 at any time. The federal grant is never more than your assessed need.
Part-time students must pass every course OSAP funded. If you fail or don't finish one, you'll need to complete at least one term on your own money before part-time OSAP returns. Pick a load you can finish around your work hours.
Going back after earlier college or university
Your old transcript can affect new aid. Full-time OSAP pays only for the length of your program plus one more study period. A four-year program can get up to five years of funding. If you took a long break and the course content changed a lot, OSAP may fund one repeat of that course.
More about going back after earlier college or university
Missed progress has a cost too. A first missed requirement puts you on academic probation. Later ones bring funding restrictions of 1 year, then 3 years, then 5 years. The fourth restriction lasts until your loans are fully repaid. If illness or a family crisis caused the problem, you can ask the aid office for a review. Bring documents.
One old worry no longer applies. Before 2023-24, OSAP ran a credit check on first-time applicants older than 22. Ontario says a credit check is no longer part of the application. Your credit history may still come up in an audit or investigation.
Timing an adult application for Fall 2027
Apply for university and OSAP as two separate tasks. Your admission route may be mature, transfer or regular. Check the school's rules in our mature student admission guide and our routes without Grade 12. OSAP then needs its own application each academic year, even if you received aid last year.
More about timing an adult application for Fall 2027
For 2026-27, full-time applications are due 60 days before your study period ends. Documents must reach the aid office 40 days before it ends. Expect about 4 to 6 weeks from a complete file to an answer. Ontario hadn't published the 2027-28 application when we checked on October 30, 2026.
