There is no single King's cut-off. The overall average required runs from 70% for a general BA or BMus, to 75% for any Foundation Year Program route and the BSc, to 80% for the Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) — and all of them are eligibility floors, not guaranteed admission cut-offs. Match the exact route before applying, especially where a science prerequisite, a writing sample, or a music audition applies.

Published minimum averages differ by degree
There is no single King's cut-off. The published high-school minimums are 70% overall for the general Bachelor of Arts and general Bachelor of Music, 75% for any Foundation Year Program route (BA-FYP, BMus-FYP, BSc and BSc-FYP), and 80% for the Bachelor of Journalism (Honours). Every route also requires senior academic English at a minimum grade of 70% plus four additional senior-level courses with no grade below 60%—BSc routes substitute a senior math (in Ontario, MHF4U or MCV4U at 70%) plus three additional courses. King's repeats on every panel that meeting the minimum entrance average does not guarantee admission.
The old 75%-for-everything summary is wrong in both directions: general BA applicants clear at 70%, and journalism applicants need 80%.

Foundation Year Program applications require an academic writing sample. Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) applicants may submit a journalism portfolio and references, both listed as optional. Bachelor of Music applicants complete a supplemental music application inside the admission application and follow the Fountain School of Performing Arts application and audition procedures. BA Theatre (Acting) applicants flag their interest and are then prompted for a one-page declaration, a current photo, a resume of relevant experience, and two referee names. Any applicant with a break in studies is prompted for a letter of activities after first review.

Transfer credit requires the paid $200 admission deposit, a final grade of C or higher, a King's/Dalhousie course equivalency, and relevance to the program. CAPE applicants must hold CSEC results in at least five subjects including English plus a minimum of two 2-unit CAPE subjects, and 2-unit CAPE results of 1, 2 or 3 can earn transfer credit—one-unit CAPE courses cannot. Foundation Year, journalism, and combined honours
King's distinctive academic choices sit inside a much wider King's and Dalhousie course network. Build the application around the intended degree, then decide whether FYP or an upper-year interdisciplinary honours pairing fits the plan.
Foundation Year Program (FYP)
A full-year first-year program registered as KING 1001.12 + 1002.12 (24 credit hours) for BA, BJH and BMus students, or the abridged KING 1101.09 + 1102.09 (18 credit hours) for BSc students. The four-credit stream attends eight hours of lecture and four hours of tutorial a week — a two-hour lecture every weekday except Tuesday, then tutorial groups of about 15 — and writes twelve essays across six sections running from the ancient to the contemporary world.
What FYP unlocks
FYP satisfies the Humanities/Languages, Social Sciences, and Writing requirements of the College of Arts and Science, and English, History, Philosophy and Sociology waive their introductory-course requirement for FYP graduates. A B- or higher removes the introductory Political Science and Theatre requirements. Dalhousie’s Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and its School of Physiotherapy endorse FYP as appropriate preparation.
Bachelor of Journalism (Honours)
Four years: FYP plus Foundations of Journalism in year one; reporting, visual storytelling, and Indigenous Peoples and Media in year two; advanced reporting plus ethics and law in year three; and a capstone honours project, three nine-credit-hour workshops, and the required four-week approved internship in year four. Students publish through The Signal, the school’s own newsroom.
BA, BSc, and BMus
King’s students are taught in the same courses by the same professors as Dalhousie students and receive the Dalhousie BA, BSc, or BMus. A joint King’s/Dalhousie BA or BSc is conferred only where one of King’s combined honours programs is completed.
King’s combined honours
Upper-year interdisciplinary options are Contemporary Studies, Early Modern Studies, and History of Science and Technology, each paired with a program from the shared King’s and Dalhousie faculties and finished with a final-year research project. Each is also available as a minor.
Graduate journalism
The King’s/Dalhousie Master of Journalism runs roughly two years across five semesters, entered in September or — for those who already hold a journalism degree — in January, and built around a substantial professional project. A one-year Bachelor of Journalism and a Minor in Journalism Studies also exist.

Foundation Year Program: the actual weekly structure
FYP is a full-year, first-year program registered as KING 1001.12 + 1002.12 (24 credit hours / four credits) for BA, BJH and BMus students, or the abridged KING 1101.09 + 1102.09 (18 credit hours / three credits) for BSc students. The four-credit stream attends a two-hour lecture every weekday except Tuesday—MWRF 9:35-11:25—then breaks into tutorial groups of approximately 15 with a member of FYP's interdisciplinary faculty: eight hours of lecture and four hours of tutorial per week. The three-credit stream drops Thursday for six lecture and three tutorial hours. A further optional General Tutorial runs Friday afternoons with that week's lecturers. Both halves must be completed in consecutive terms; it is not possible to register for only part of FYP.

Foundation Year Program: six sections and the texts
First offered in 1972/73, FYP moves through six historical sections from the ancient to the contemporary world, roughly four teaching weeks each. Required reading in 2025/2026 included The Epic of Gilgamesh, Homer's Odyssey, Sophocles' Antigone, Plato's Republic and Virgil's Aeneid; the Qur'an, Augustine's Confessions and Dante's Divine Comedy; Pico della Mirandola, Machiavelli's The Prince, Shakespeare's Hamlet, Montaigne, The Broken Spears and Zara Yaqob's Hatata Inquiries; Descartes' Meditations, Hobbes' Leviathan, Rousseau, Austen's Emma, Cugoano and Kant; Wollstonecraft, Hegel, Marx and Engels, Darwin, Nietzsche, Pauline Johnson, Du Bois and Dostoyevsky; and Eliot's The Waste Land, Freud, Heidegger, Primo Levi, Arendt, de Beauvoir, Césaire and selections from the Summary of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
King's labels these as 'some of those required in 2025/2026' and says required reading 'may include' them—the list rotates, so treat it as representative rather than a syllabus.

Foundation Year Program: workload and grading
Grading is based on attendance, essays, oral examinations, and tutorial work, and no student can pass without completing all requirements. Students in KING 1001.12 + 1002.12 write twelve essays across the six sections; students in KING 1101.09 + 1102.09 write ten. Tutorial attendance is required, and each group keeps a main tutor for three of the six sections plus three other tutors for the rest. FYP is not a complete first year on its own: the four-credit stream must add one further full credit and the three-credit stream two, from the King's/Dalhousie College of Arts and Science or King's Journalism.

How FYP feeds the degree
FYP satisfies both the Humanities/Languages and the Social Sciences requirements of the College of Arts and Science, and also satisfies the Writing course requirement. English, History, Philosophy and Sociology waive their introductory-course requirement for FYP graduates; Classics, German and Spanish admit them to introductory and non-language advanced courses. A grade of B- or higher removes the introductory Political Science requirement and PERF 1000.03 / PERF 1002.03 for Theatre, and FYP may substitute for GERM 1020.06. Dalhousie's Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and its School of Physiotherapy have endorsed FYP as appropriate preparation for admission to their professional programs. King's requires FYP in the first year of the BJH degree.

Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) year by year
Year one pairs FYP with Foundations of Journalism I and II (JOUR 1002.03 / 1003.03). Year two adds Introduction to Reporting, Intermediate Reporting, Introduction to Visual Storytelling, and Indigenous Peoples and Media (JOUR 2704.03 / INDG 2704.03) alongside 18 credit hours of arts or science electives. Year three requires Advanced Reporting 1 and 2 and Ethics and Law for Journalists, two journalism electives, and another 18 credit hours of electives. Year four is the capstone honours project—a major feature story about the news media—plus a News or Advanced News workshop and two more nine-credit-hour workshops from audio, video, creative nonfiction, investigative, or online features, and the internship. Students must also complete at least three credit hours in Canadian history or Canadian political institutions.

The three King's honours programs
King's offers three interdisciplinary humanities-based honours programs for upper-year students: Contemporary Studies, Early Modern Studies, and the History of Science and Technology. Each leads to a combined honours degree, meaning it must be paired with a program from the shared King's and Dalhousie faculties of Science or Arts and Social Sciences, and each is also available as a minor. Final-year students complete a research project or thesis with a faculty advisor. Completing one of these combined honours programs is what triggers the joint King's/Dalhousie BA or BSc.

Which programs require King's enrolment, and how switching works
The calendar names the exceptions to the shared-course rule: students taking the Foundation Year Program, the Bachelor of Journalism (Honours), the one-year Bachelor of Journalism, the MFA in Creative Nonfiction or Fiction, or the Master of Journalism must be enrolled at King's. In all years of undergraduate study any course in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or the Faculty of Science is available to King's students, the two institutions share one student information system, and a student may switch enrolment between King's and Dalhousie at any time up to and including the last day to register for the fall term. Dalhousie students cannot take FYP, but can take King's CSP, EMSP and HOST courses and many journalism courses.

Graduate journalism at King's
The King's/Dalhousie Master of Journalism takes roughly two years across five academic semesters. Most students begin in September taking introductory reporting courses alongside BJ students; applicants who already hold a journalism degree or deep working experience can join in January. Coursework covers journalism research, reporting fundamentals, audio and video, journalism and society, advanced reporting, the professional journalism environment, and data journalism methods, plus two required electives at King's, Dalhousie or another institution. The core is a professional project—a substantial in-depth piece of journalism—and two semesters may be spent away from campus. Enrolled MJ students can apply for awards including the $4,000 Peter Mansbridge Investigative Writing Award.

King's residence, meal plans, and 2026–27 planning
Residence sits around the King's Quad beside Dalhousie and is filled first come, first served — but King's does publish a guarantee: new-from-high-school and transfer students are guaranteed a space, pending availability, until April 1, and King's states it has always been able to accommodate all of its first-year resident applicants. Room preferences are never guaranteed. The residence application fee is $50; after a room offer, a $400 non-refundable confirmation deposit reserves the space.

King's does publish a residence guarantee. New-from-high-school students and transfer students are processed first come, first served with a residence guarantee, pending availability, until April 1, and King's states it has always been able to accommodate all of its first-year resident applicants. Returning and upper-year residents draw on a set allotment of bed spaces and then go to a waitlist, with priority to residents of an equity-deserving group. Non-King's students are waitlisted; King's generally houses between 5 and 15 of them per year, usually at the last minute.
The guarantee is conditional—'pending availability'—and room preferences are never guaranteed, so the April 1 date is a hard planning anchor rather than a formality.

The four payments that secure a room
A $50 residence application fee activates the application. A $200 admission deposit ($2,500 for international students) confirms admission and is required before a NetID can be set up, which is itself required before applying for residence. A $400 residence confirmation deposit must be paid before a residence offer can be sent; the first round of assignments and offers goes out in late May. All three are non-refundable, and a student who cancels forfeits the full deposit. A deferred offer carries the $400 forward, but the $50 application fee is payable every year.

Buildings, bays, and capacity
King's can provide residence accommodation for up to 271 students in the stone buildings nestled around the College's Quad—Alexandra Hall, the Bays, and Angels' Roost, with Cochran also priced in the rate table. Accommodation is largely double rooms, which King's says most students prefer; a very limited number of singles is generally reserved for upper-year students and those with medical needs. Residents share Prince Hall dining, kitchens, common rooms with TVs, and fitness facilities, and King's describes each residence as having its own distinct charm on every bay and floor.

Every King's residence student must hold one of four residence meal plans. Published 2026/27 totals: 7 Day All Day Dining $5,747.00 with $150 dining dollars; 5 Day All Day Dining (Monday to Friday) $5,445.00 with $100; 14 meals per week $4,747.00 with $75; and 10 meals per week $4,478.00 with $75. Plans can be upgraded at any time, but the deadline to downgrade for the academic year is September 22, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ADT. The example is based on Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences courses (Foundation Year Arts plus one elective), a double room in Alexandra Hall, and a 7 Day All Day Dining meal plan. Nova Scotia students are additionally eligible for a $1,283 bursary from the Province of Nova Scotia at a full course load.

The international tuition guarantee and the two waivers
International students entering the BA, BSc, BMus or BJH are covered by King's International Student Tuition Guarantee: $37,992 per year in 2026/27, the same price in each year of the program, held for up to five years (a four-year standard length plus one if needed), irrespective of how many courses the student takes, plus incidental fees and the international health plan. Two waivers sit alongside it. Nova Scotia International Student Program graduates coming to King's directly from high school pay out-of-province domestic rates, renewable up to four years, which King's puts at savings over $20,000 per year. The International Mobility Award applies up to a $12,000 tuition waiver automatically after a successful visa application and course registration, with no application, for full-time registered international undergraduates, renewable up to four years—but it excludes students eligible for the NSISP waiver.

Guaranteed Year 1 amounts by admission average: 80-84.9% earns $1,000, 85-89.9% earns $2,000, 90-94.9% earns $3,000, 95-97.9% earns $4,500, and 98%+ earns $5,000. No scholarship application is required—every secondary student who applies for September entry in the BA, BSc, BJ(Hons) or BMus is considered automatically, provided official first-semester or mid-year grades arrive by the March 1, 11:59 p.m. AST deadline. All students are then considered for automatic merit-based in-course scholarships in years 2, 3 and 4 at scholarship standing (3.7 GPA), reduced to a 3.3 GPA for students moving from FYP into year 2.

The Sobey Scholarship is worth $50,000 total—$17,000 in year one and $11,000 in years two to four—with two available, an 85%+ requirement, and preference for Canadian citizens, Atlantic Canadians, and students entering FYP. The Carrie and Ralph Wright Memorial Scholarship is $39,000 ($12,000 then $9,000, one available, FYP, 85%+). The Debra Deane Little and Robert Little Academic Scholarships for Varsity Athletes are $20,000 each ($5,000 a year, fourteen available, 80%+, no application—recommendation from the Director of Athletics). King's combines its Quad, residence, societies, traditions and eight Blue Devils varsity teams with access to Dalhousie facilities. A King's ID provides access to Dalplex, Wickwire Field, Dalhousie fitness classes, and intramural programs — but King's varsity teams, intramurals, societies, scholarships and student employment are for King's students only, as Dalhousie's are for Dalhousie students.

King's states that nearly every King's student participates in a group or society, that it fields 8 varsity sports teams plus non-competitive athletic programming, and that 1 out of 3 students holds an on-campus job during their time at King's. The chapel community is open to people of any faith or none and runs wilderness retreats, community outreach, social justice and volunteerism, plus two choirs. The traditions that actually run
Matriculation formally makes new students members of King's: in traditional academic gowns they inscribe their names in the Matricula, whose first volume dates to 1803. Classics in the Quad stages a Greek tragedy drawn from the FYP curriculum on the library steps, with first-year students given preference for roles. Formal Meal is held twice a year, once per semester, with gowns, Latin graces and students standing until the head table arrives. The student body votes by ballot to choose the Alex Fountain Memorial Lecture speaker—past lecturers include Tanya Tagaq, Miriam Toews, Michael Ondaatje and Emily Wilson. The Wardroom
The HMCS King's Wardroom is a student lounge and study space by day and a campus pub and music venue by night, with a wet/dry liquor licence so students of all ages can attend. Published hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., closed Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. King's notes that readers of The Coast have ranked it the #1 'Best Student Hang' numerous times. The Wardroom also houses the Galley, a daytime café; both are student-run businesses that employ students.

KTS, the choirs, and the dance collective
The King's Theatrical Society is entirely student-run and is described as one of the oldest theatrical societies in North America and the largest per capita campus society of its kind on the continent, staging commercial plays, musicals, original student-written work and experimental pieces each season. The King's Chorus is open to the broader King's community, runs roughly 60 members, and performs one concert per academic term. The King's College Chapel Choir comprises 24 student choristers plus four section leads, sings weekly Evensong and Eucharist, and performs a large-scale choral masterwork in concert at least once per term. The King's Dance Collective offers non-competitive workshops and open studio time.

Journalism internship and program-specific work experience
King's does not operate its own universal co-op program: its experiential learning page states that co-op opportunities exist through the partnership with Dalhousie and the King's/Dalhousie shared College of Arts and Science, so eligibility and sequencing are set by the specific Dalhousie department. The structured work requirement at King's itself is Journalism: all BJ and BJH students complete a non-credit, four-week internship at an approved news-media outlet. Outside journalism, King's publishes paid Internships for Public and Applied Humanities valued at $7,500, ten TECHNATION-funded Infuse internships, and Mitacs placements.

Where journalism internships have gone
King's states that BJH students have interned at newsrooms including the Canadian Press, CBC, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, Elle Magazine and Sportsnet, and also at smaller outlets such as alt-weeklies and video production houses. Most students complete internships in Canada, but placements have also run in New York, Chile and Beirut. Student work published on The Signal regularly wins regional and national awards including Atlantic Journalism Awards, Emerge Media Awards and Canadian Online Publishing Awards.

King's Experiential Learning Program publishes Internships for Public and Applied Humanities as paid summer work placements valued at $7,500. In partnership with TECHNATION, King's holds Infuse Program funding for ten summer internships lasting 8 to 16 weeks in communications, research, social media, website and database work, each at least 50 per cent digital skills.
