Direct entry from Grade 12
King's says its new Bachelor of Journalism and Media (Honours), or BJMH, admits students directly from high school, starting in September 2027. You can also choose to include King's Foundation Year Program as part of your studies. King's admission requirements and dates pages still list the current Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) for September 2027 entry, while the program pages say the BJMH begins that month, so ask admissions@ukings.ca which degree name your offer will carry.
King's processes applications on a rolling basis. This means the college makes admission decisions throughout the year as applications are received and completed. Apply early to improve your chances, especially before March 1 if you want scholarship consideration.

Course and grade requirements
For Ontario students, King's asks for ENG4U, NBE4U, ETS4U or EAE4U at 70% or higher, four more 4U or 4M courses with no grade below 60%, and an 80% overall average. Other provinces list the same pattern with their own courses, for example English Language Arts 30-1 at 70% in Alberta.

The average you need
King's lists 80% as the requirement for most Canadian provinces. This is your average across your counted courses. English must be at least 70%.
Meeting the minimum average does not guarantee admission, especially as King's has limited enrollment in its journalism program. The college encourages strong high school performance above the minimum threshold. Track your grades using our Top 6 average calculator.
Optional portfolio and references
King's journalism welcomes an optional portfolio and references to strengthen your application. Unlike some other journalism programs, King's does not require supplementary essays or interviews.
If you have journalism work, writing samples, or a portfolio you are proud of, submit it. Your references can speak to your communication skills and passion for journalism. However, these are optional, so your grades remain the primary factor.
King's journalism program overview
In 1978, King's created Atlantic Canada's only degree program in journalism, and it will mark 50 years of journalism education in 2028. In 2022, the university created the School of Journalism, Writing & Publishing to house journalism and publishing education together.
The program emphasizes hands-on learning and real-world media production. King's positions journalism graduates to contribute to media and cultural life across Atlantic Canada and beyond.

Residence and campus
King's College is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Residence applications have their own deadlines: to secure guaranteed on-campus housing, submit your residence application by April 1, 2027.
The college notes that enrollment is limited and offers are made on a rolling basis, so early commitment through your residence application helps secure a spot.
Tuition for 2026-27
King's 2026-27 fee sheet lists the current Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) only. Its tuition is $9,081.96 for year one (taken with the Foundation Year Program) and for year two, $10,062.90 for year three and $9,289.80 for year four. The sheet does not yet list the new BJMH, so check fees for 2027-28 before you budget. Additional fees for student union, athletic facilities, health services and administration apply to all students.
Eighty percent of first-year students receive a financial award from King's, which demonstrates the college's commitment to accessibility. Apply by March 1 to be considered for entrance scholarships and major awards.

Program features and pathways
King's lists the Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) as its current program and the Bachelor of Journalism and Media (Honours) as its Fall 2027 program. The new degree adds a wide range of electives and certificates, including digital media startups, AI in media, and investigative and data journalism. King's also has a one-year Bachelor of Journalism for students who already hold a degree.
The college also offers a minor in Journalism Studies and a Master of Journalism for graduate-level study.

Co-op and work experience
King's does not describe a co-op program with paid work terms. Instead, King's says every BJMH student completes a work placement. In year four you write an Honours Project for publication and take intensive workshops, a professional practice seminar and an internship.
From second year on, you publish text, audio, video and data stories in The Signal, the school's online media outlet. King's says students have interned at the Canadian Press, CBC, The Globe and Mail and Sportsnet.

Career outcomes and pathways
King's journalism graduates pursue careers in media, writing, publishing and communications across Atlantic Canada and beyond. The college notes its goal is to help 'students and alumni continue making contributions to the media, arts and cultural life' of the region.
King's says graduates work in reporting, editing and producer roles, and also in public service, media production, marketing and communications. For graduate study, King's points to its Master of Journalism and its combined law and journalism degree.

Advanced options after first year
King's says the BJMH also accepts transfers from other programs and universities. Students who already have a degree can apply to the one-year Bachelor of Journalism.
In first year of the BJMH, you can pair a deep dive into journalism's history and practice with electives in subjects such as history and economics. Because the admission pages and the program pages use different degree names for 2027, confirm your program choice with King's before you apply.

Independent application process (not OUAC)
Unlike many Ontario universities, King's does not participate in OUAC (Ontario's central application system). You apply directly through King's own online application portal.
This means you will need to track King's specific deadlines separately from other universities. Early application to King's is especially important since rolling admissions reward early submissions, especially for scholarship consideration before March 1.

For parents
An 80% average is a strong target for your child to aim for. Encourage performance in all courses, especially English, which has a specific 70% minimum.
King's rolling admissions mean early application is key, particularly before March 1 for scholarship consideration. Encourage your child to submit their application as soon as possible after October 1. Since King's uses its own application system (not OUAC), families need to track these deadlines separately.
Halifax offers a small-city university experience with a strong journalism tradition. King's report that 80% of first-year students receive a financial award shows the college is committed to making education accessible.
The optional portfolio can strengthen your child's application if they have journalism work or writing samples they are proud of. Even without a portfolio, strong grades are the most important factor.
