Programs and Pathways
University of Calgary programs and selection pathways
Program choice changes both prerequisites and the way applicants are selected. Engineering has a common first year, Health Sciences adds a supplement, Nursing uses a threshold-plus-lottery model, and some Science programs publish much higher estimated competitive averages.
Schulich School of Engineering
A common first year leads to eight accredited majors including biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical and software, engineering physics, geomatics, mechanical, and sustainable systems engineering.
Students who complete all 10 technical common-core courses in first year are guaranteed their first choice of major, and the practical-experience requirement can be met through a paid 12- to 16-month internship.
Haskayne School of Business
The Bachelor of Commerce combines core business study with concentrations and optional experiential learning.
Haskayne co-op uses paid full-time work terms totalling at least eight and at most 16 months; employment is competitive rather than automatic.
Health and Nursing
Health Sciences requires a supplementary application, while direct-entry Nursing enters applicants at or above an 82% incoming average into a lottery from Fall 2026.
These are different selection systems. Complete each program's live requirements, English rules, and deadlines separately.
Arts and Science
Applicants can compare broad Arts and Science choices, including Psychology routes with different degree and prerequisite structures.
UCalgary currently estimates a low-90s competitive average for Psychology BSc, but the live program page—not an old average—should drive application planning.
Current structure
Engineering common first year with a first-choice guarantee
All Schulich students complete a common core program in first year before choosing from eight accredited majors. UCalgary guarantees first choice to students who successfully complete all 10 technical common-core courses.

Current estimate
Psychology BSc estimated competitive average
The Psychology BSc program page currently estimates a low-90s competitive admission average alongside English Language Arts 30-1 and Mathematics 30-1 in the five-course pattern.
Estimated averages are planning guidance, not cut-off promises; the live program page governs.

Selection models differ by program
The calendar attaches different selection machinery to different degrees: Health Sciences (BHSc) adds a supplementary application and requires Mathematics 30-1 with at least 70%, Nursing uses the lottery, and creative programs add auditions or portfolios. The program choice—not the university—sets the real bar.
