For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities with ZIMSEC or Cambridge A levels, but their entry rules aren't identical. Laurier names a Zimbabwe route with two A levels and five O levels. Memorial now requires B averages. Check the board, subject count and degree prerequisites before using any general A-level advice.

Checked October 18, 2026. The table separates named Zimbabwe qualifications from British-pattern curriculum rules. Standing policies remain subject to the university's review. York's handbook and some credit guidance cover an older cycle. Those labels matter when you plan a September 2027 start.

ZIMSEC and Cambridge need different records

Start by identifying who issued each result.

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council is ZIMSEC. It runs national exams and provides confirmation and certifying-statement services. Cambridge International is a different exam board. Your school may offer one system or records from both. A subject called Biology doesn't establish which board assessed it. Give the university the qualification and board exactly as printed.

ZIMSEC's official statement form is used for certifying statements and verification. Cambridge distinguishes a certificate from a statement of results and offers its own verification service. Use the service assigned by your university. A Cambridge order can't verify a ZIMSEC sitting, and a school prediction isn't a final certificate from either board.

For a mixed record, list each examination sitting separately. Include the O levels that came before your advanced study. Ask admissions whether the combination meets its credential rule and how it will count repeated subjects. Don't change a ZIMSEC qualification into “Cambridge” on a form because the application menu looks easier to complete that way.

Compare ten undergraduate admission routes

Use the national entry where published, then check the program's required subjects.

Wilfrid LaurierZimbabwe: at least two A levels and five O levels, seven academic courses.Requires final Zimbabwe certifying statements directly from ZIMSEC. MemorialZimbabwe O and A levels. Required areas include English, Mathematics, laboratory science, Social Studies or language, and an elective.Winter 2027 onward: O-level required-area average B, plus at least two A levels averaging B. All courses used must be passed.Explicit rule for Winter 2027 and beyond. Competitive degrees can require more.
University of ManitobaExplicit ZIMSEC route: two A-level courses and three O-level courses.University 1: equivalent C (70%) average, no course below D (60%). Engineering: B (80%) average, none below C (70%), in the named four-course group.Current Zimbabwe block. Percentages are local equivalents, not a Canadian scale.
University of GuelphNational Zimbabwe O/A-level entry names a minimum A/B combination. Cambridge GCE framework normally requires two A levels and three O levels.GCE framework needs five distinct subject areas. Two AS subjects may replace one A level. Required courses are encouraged at AS or A level.Standing country and curriculum rules. General Paper isn't accepted.
Canadian Mennonite UniversityZimbabwe: three Advanced and two Ordinary subjects.English at 75/100; four other passes at C or 69/100 in CMU's published wording. English-test conditions also apply.Current country entry. Don't transfer its percentage equivalents to another school.
University of TorontoCambridge/British-pattern route: five different O-level subjects and three different A-level subjects.English at O, AS or A level. Maths at AS or A level for Calculus; other prerequisites at AS or A level.Standing curriculum rule. Confirm a national ZIMSEC record separately if the country rule isn't clear.
Queen'sBritish-pattern route: three A levels and two GCSE/IGCSE subjects; General Paper excluded.Competitive A-level grades B or higher; O-level grades C or 4 or higher. Science and health degrees name their own subjects.Current curriculum page. Board-specific national equivalence still needs confirmation where not named.
YorkGCE: two Advanced passes plus three GCSE/IGCSE Ordinary passes.C average across both levels; E grades excluded. Prerequisites at Advanced Level with at least C unless otherwise stated.Latest available 2026-2027 handbook. Confirm Fall 2027 conditions.
McMasterBritish-pattern route: three distinct A2 or International A-level subjects plus two O-level subjects.Maths and science prerequisites must be A2 unless stated otherwise. Two A2 plus at least four AS subjects receive individual consideration.Standing rule. The alternative is individual review, not automatic entry with two A levels.
McGillThree A levels or equivalent, or two A levels and two AS subjects, across three different subjects.Mathematics and Further Mathematics count as one subject. Science needs A-level Mathematics and at least one A-level Biology, Chemistry or Physics.Standing framework. Its country list flags a new Zimbabwe certificate programme as under review.

Choose subjects for the degree you want

The number of A levels is only the first check.

McGill's treatment of Mathematics and Further Mathematics can change your plan. They count as one subject for its three-subject rule. Don't assume that three certificates always mean three distinct subjects. Its Science framework also names Mathematics and a laboratory science at Advanced Level. The O-level science record still matters, so keep those results in the file.

Queen's Health Sciences gives another useful example. Its British-pattern page requires English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. Biology and Chemistry must be Advanced Level, and it specifies IGCSE English at A or 7. It also requires a supplement. This is a first-degree health program. Its admission offer wouldn't be an offer to medical school.

For Engineering, compare the science levels directly. Queen's requires Mathematics and either Chemistry or Physics at Advanced Level, alongside its other named subjects. McMaster normally puts all required maths and science at A2. A combination suitable for one degree may leave a gap at the other. Use the program source before deciding to stop a subject at AS.

Some alternative combinations are available, but the wording matters. Toronto considers four AS subjects instead of three A levels for most programs. McMaster's two-A2 alternative requires at least four AS subjects and individual review. Neither statement supports a general claim that two A levels will work everywhere. Get a decision on your intended degree before paying for extra examinations.

McGill's country list names Zimbabwe GCE Advanced Levels and says a new certificate programme is under review. It doesn't explain every new award title. If that wording could describe your credential, ask McGill to identify the rule for it. Its existing Cambridge subject framework and its ZIMSEC credit table don't resolve an unspecified new award automatically.

A-level advanced credit by board

Credit depends on the final result and the faculty you enter.

TorontoA-level final B or better; no AS credit. Named recipients are Arts & Science at St. George, Daniels, Mississauga and Scarborough.Up to 3.0 full credits. Assessed after you accept an offer, with official final board results. Don't extend this ceiling to Engineering.
McGillIts tables list Cambridge/CIE and ZIMSEC separately. General advanced-level threshold C or better, with B in Mathematics for BCom.Up to 30 credits depending on the faculty and subjects. Page labels Fall 2026; Fall 2027 credit confirmation pending.
GuelphIts GCE policy considers final A-level subjects at C or better.Up to 3.0 Guelph credits, subject to course assignment. This isn't the same unit as 3.0 full credits at Toronto.
McMasterA2 subjects with B or better may be considered for advanced credit.Faculty discretion; no fixed entitlement from a predicted result.

Use your own board's course table. A Cambridge syllabus code can lead to a different assessment from a ZIMSEC course with the same name. Credit might replace an elective, a required course, or neither. Ask how the result changes your degree plan. Don't budget for one fewer year until the university confirms the courses and sequence you can skip.

Think ahead if medicine is a goal. A course waived by your first university might still be relevant to a future medical faculty's prerequisites. Check how that medical school treats examination credit before declining the university course. Keep the board result and the credit assessment, so a later admissions office can see what you actually completed.

A bachelor's degree and an MD are separate applications

Plan a first degree you would want even without a later medical offer.

The health sciences and pre-med guide compares first-degree choices. MD means Doctor of Medicine. A Biology or Health Sciences degree is university study, not a guaranteed MD place. The medical school will later apply its own entry and academic rules. Your citizenship or residency category can matter even after you earn a Canadian degree.

Medical facultyCurrent rule for an international applicantWhat it means for a 2027 school-leaver
McGill MDCMExplicit Fall 2027 international category. Requires a qualifying bachelor's degree by July 31 of the entering year and all other conditions. Anticipates one seat.A possible later category to research, not direct entry from A levels or a reserved future seat. The published 2027 MD cycle is for degree-qualified applicants.
UBC MDThe faculty states it cannot admit international students. An international undergraduate BSc offer doesn't establish eligibility for UBC's MD. Check the medical rule again for your later application year.

These two policies don't describe every medical faculty in Canada. They show why neither a blanket ban nor a promise of access is sound advice. If you begin a bachelor's degree in Fall 2027, your MD cycle comes later. Check the schools again during that degree and before paying for medical entry tests or forms.

McGill has a further language condition. Its MDCM policy requires French at B2 for Montreal or C1 for Outaouais, with specified ways to prove it. An English-language undergraduate admission exemption doesn't meet that condition by itself. Include time for French study if McGill's medical route is part of your long-term plan.

Toronto's MD academic requirements also illustrate a wording trap. “Internationally educated” describes where someone studied; it isn't proof that every international-status applicant is eligible. Its academic page requires prior university study and says a particular pre-med program isn't necessary. Check the legal applicant category as well as the degree requirements at each faculty.

Build separate financial plans for the two stages. An undergraduate award letter can tell you which years of that first degree it funds. It doesn't secure support for a later medical course. Ask how you'll pay for the bachelor's degree and what you can do with it after graduation. Revisit medical-school costs once your later eligibility and application year are known.

Send results and settle the English requirement

Your final board records must match the qualification used for the offer.

Laurier expressly asks for final Zimbabwe statements directly from ZIMSEC. Memorial allows interim or predicted A-level documents for early review, then requires official certificates for verified acceptance. Keep your candidate details and each sitting's date available. Follow the receiving office's delivery instruction; don't pay for a general authentication service before you know what the university needs.

Cambridge sends certificates after the deadline to query results. Its current guidance lists end of October for the June series and end of March for the November series. Tell admissions which series you're taking so it can explain its final-document condition. Don't assume the physical certificate will arrive by the same date as the first result release.

English proficiency is another separate decision. Memorial normally asks for no further proof after two years in its listed curriculum. If your only final English is a second/additional-language subject, it requires a standardized test. Toronto may exempt applicants after at least four years studying in English in Zimbabwe, but decides after seeing the documents. Leave space for a test if you don't meet the stated condition.

Canadian Mennonite has a different country condition. It requires an English test if your school English result is below 75/100. It also requires one if you finished high school more than three years ago. The test result must be less than two years old. A strong earlier English mark may not be enough. Read the rule for your actual school-leaving date.

Compare tuition and usable scholarship deadlines

Price the undergraduate degree before treating medicine as the next funded step.

Memorial's published international tuition is CAN$22,500 for a new student in its 2026-2027 example. The standard example covers ten courses over two semesters; compulsory fees are extra. Fall 2027 tuition is not confirmed here. Carleton's live viewbook explicitly lists CAN$39,000 for BA or BSc in 2027-2028 and 2028-2029, before its estimated miscellaneous fees. These aren't prices for an MD.

Compare the Memorial university guide and Carleton fee guide for the costs beyond tuition. Add housing and travel. Check the charges for the actual subject load you plan to take. A scholarship must cover the years and expenses you need. Meeting the conditions for a competitive award doesn't mean you have money to spend.

UBC's International Scholars Program is open for September 2027. It considers eligible international secondary-school entrants with significant financial need. Complete admission first, then the award form. The deadline for both is November 15, 2026; the deadline for admission documents and English evidence is January 31, 2027. Nomination and degree exclusions also apply.

For Pearson, the October 9, 2026 school-nomination deadline and October 16 admission deadline have already passed. November 6, 2026 is the remaining award-form step for eligible nominees. It doesn't allow a new candidate to start all stages now. Use the scholarship planning guide to compare live opportunities and a plan without a major award.

Study-permit funding and provincial letters

The undergraduate offer doesn't replace the immigration application.

IRCC's financial rule for one person outside Quebec is CAN$23,448 in annual living costs for applications from September 1, 2026. Add tuition and transport. You must also explain funding for the full program, without relying on work in Canada. IRCC updates the amounts yearly. The amount that will apply to your 2027 submission needs a fresh check.

Show the source of your funds. Match any sponsor letter to the financial records. IRCC accepts a guaranteed investment certificate among several forms of evidence. It isn't a universal purchase requirement.

The study-permit checklist also asks for acceptance and identity evidence. Most undergraduates need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, a PAL or TAL, unless exempt. Your institution directs that process. The official attestation page doesn't confirm a 2027 expiry schedule, so confirm it with your school before you apply. Quebec has its own CAQ and financial rules.

Plan the next application step

Match one board record to one degree before paying an application fee.

Read the McGill university guide alongside its application deadlines. Use the Guelph deadlines or Laurier deadlines for those applications. Keep the supplement and final-result dates beside the main closing date. A November exam sitting or a nomination process can need a different schedule from a Canadian school calendar.

For course choices, use the Health Sciences and pre-med guide. Keep a second degree or career option that makes sense for your interests. A sound plan can include medicine as a goal while still treating future medical admission as a separate, uncertain decision.
