College co-op in Ontario
paid work, placements and diploma PGWP rules
For 2027, an Ontario college can offer paid co-op or an unpaid work placement. Check the exact program. A co-op place isn't a job guarantee. If you're an international student, check the rules for work after you graduate. Language and field-of-study rules can apply to a diploma. They're separate from the rules for work while studying.

Read the placement type before comparing colleges
Work-integrated learning is a broad label for learning through work or practice. Fanshawe distinguishes paid co-op from unpaid clinical placements. Mohawk also describes clinical placements and practicums as unpaid, while field placements are generally unpaid with some exceptions. A program advertising experience doesn't therefore promise wages. Read the actual placement type before adding income to a budget.
Look at how the work fits the course sequence. Fanshawe's Accounting co-op example places paid work in the break between first and second year. A health program can instead require clinical learning during a semester. That difference changes when you can work elsewhere, whether you'll need to travel and which housing months you must cover.
Keep the academic outcome clear. An assessed placement can be a graduation requirement even when it isn't paid. A capstone project can develop useful skills without being an employer placement at all. For programming diplomas in more detail, read the college programming comparison. The sections below compare work models and the extra checks for international students.

Find out whether co-op entry happens before or after admission
Some colleges let you apply to a named co-op version. Others admit you to a general program and assess a co-op application later. Conestoga's January 2027 programming page describes the second route. Its academic threshold is a condition for consideration, not a promise of a co-op place. The number of places also depends on the labour market.
Algonquin's Mechanical Engineering Technology page describes co-op and non-co-op versions. It says academic requirements and available places affect the work route. Ask how a missed requirement changes your graduation plan. Do you move to a non-co-op version, take another course or wait for a later work period? The answer must come from that program, not a different college's policy.
Match the intake in your notes to the intake on the source. Conestoga's January 2027 schedule doesn't establish a September 2027 sequence. Fanshawe's page displays a September 2027 London intake, but that availability can change before you apply. Record the campus and credential as well as the program name before sending an application through the Ontario college process.

Expect to apply for jobs even when you pay a co-op fee
Fanshawe says a student must conduct a personal job search and isn't guaranteed a co-op job. Its fee pays for employment-service support. Algonquin also expects students to search for and secure work terms. Treat a job board, consultant or interview workshop as support for your applications, rather than a college promise that an employer will choose you.
Ask what happens if you don't secure work in time. Conestoga's 2026-27 Business handbook describes an alternative course in specified situations. That is a program-specific academic route. It doesn't prove that a health program, another college or a different intake has the same fallback. Ask the co-op office about your exact course code and sequence.
Prepare a budget without wages until you have a real employer offer. Include co-op fees and the cost of searching, then travel or temporary housing if a job is elsewhere. Read withdrawal and refund rules before changing streams. Paying a support fee isn't the same as buying employment, and accepting a co-op admission offer doesn't decide the employer's recruitment process.

Compare outcomes only when the measures match
None of the example colleges publishes a comparable, program-level placement rate on these pages. That doesn't mean every college publishes no outcomes. It means these sources don't support a numeric ranking here. A graduate employment percentage describes a different period and population from a co-op job-search result. Don't substitute one for the other just because both involve work.
If a college supplies a rate, ask what it counts. Does the denominator include every eligible co-op student or only active job seekers? Is it one work term or any placement before graduation? Does the numerator include self-arranged roles? You need the year and program scope before comparing the figure with another institution's percentage.
A wage claim needs the same care. None of these colleges posts one pay range for every co-op job, and single job ads or graduate surveys can't stand in for one. Ask the program office for officially published work-term data, if available. Then check whether the roles and hours match the work you could take. Your own plan still needs to work if the search takes longer than expected.

Budget differently for clinical training
Mohawk Cardiovascular Technology describes two eight-week unpaid clinical placements. They occur in the third and fifth semesters of the published sequence. Its placement FAQ warns that students may have limited location choice and may face travel or relocation costs. Ask about those costs before assuming that a local college means every required learning day will be close to home.
Clinical sites can also require preparation beyond grades. The program and placement office control the health checks, documents and other non-academic requirements. Mohawk says incomplete requirements can prevent a placement. Find out which checks expire and which costs you must pay. Don't wait until the work period begins to discover that a required document is missing.
The current cardiovascular page displays September 2027 but warns that a new program application code will apply from Fall 2027. The page doesn't give the replacement code yet. Use the live college application instructions when that intake opens. A familiar older program number, the credential title and a federal field-of-study code are different identifiers.

Use the April 2026 rule for international work placements
IRCC is Canada's immigration department. From April 1, 2026, it says qualifying post-secondary international students don't need a separate co-op work permit. Secondary-school students still do. The change doesn't cover every student job. The placement has to be required for your study program and approved by the college. You still need the right documents.
Ask the college's international office to check your study permit. It must be valid, or you must have applied to extend it before expiry. It also needs a condition allowing on-campus work. You need full-time study at a designated learning institution, a school approved to host international students. Get its letter saying the placement is required. Placements can't total more than half the program. Hospital or other public-health placements need an immigration medical exam unless you've already had one. Check the rules before starting work, including any final-semester exception.
Qualifying placements have no weekly hour limit, but the half-program cap still applies. You must stop during an authorized leave or while switching schools without studying. Keep the academic placement separate from a regular off-campus job. Each has its own eligibility rules.
Some college pages still tell every international co-op student to obtain the older separate permit. That conflicts with IRCC's current post-secondary instruction. Use the federal page for the legal rule and ask the college for its placement letter and process. Don't treat an optional job outside the academic placement as covered simply because the program also offers co-op.

Check the diploma's field code instead of its marketing title
A post-graduation work permit, or PGWP, is separate from permission to do a placement while studying. For an affected diploma route, IRCC uses the six-digit Classification of Instructional Programs code, called CIP. Ask the college for the code attached to your exact credential and intake. A broad title such as business or engineering technology isn't enough to assign it yourself.
The current field table has dated eligibility columns. A code can qualify based on the relevant study-permit application date or the PGWP application date. Read the conditions beside the code, including historical dates. IRCC's freeze covers calendar 2026 only. It doesn't promise that the same list will apply when you start in Fall 2027 or when you finish.
Mohawk publishes CIP 51.0901 for the current cardiovascular program, and IRCC's table lists it as eligible. That is a useful cross-check, not an individual permit promise. The other example pages don't show exact program codes. Ask each institution for its evidence and keep the dated record rather than assuming every paid co-op diploma meets the federal field rule.

Plan the language evidence and the rest of PGWP eligibility
Current rules for other college, polytechnic and non-university graduates require Canadian Language Benchmarks, or CLB, 5 in English, or NCLC 5 in French, in every skill. The language rule uses the PGWP application date, with its November 1, 2024 transition. The eligible-field exception instead looks at the study-permit application date. Don't merge those two clocks.
IRCC accepts specified tests such as IELTS General Training and CELPIP-General. Check the per-skill conversion table; a single overall test average isn't enough. The documents page says results must be less than two years old when you apply and warns that an online checklist can label required language evidence optional. Use the actual requirement rather than that upload label.
A college bachelor's degree follows the degree rule. It has no field-of-study requirement, but the current language floor is CLB/NCLC 7. All other PGWP rules still apply. An approved institution can have a program that isn't eligible. Check the program and how you'll study. Confirm the IRCC rules before applying. The current window is within 180 days of confirmation that you've finished.
Under current general rules, the program must last at least eight months at a PGWP-eligible institution. Keep full-time status each semester; your final semester can be part-time. Your study permit must have been valid at some point during the 180 days after completion. You can't receive another PGWP if you already had one. Check IRCC's special cases if your study record includes a leave or a change of school.
The distance-learning rule uses the earlier of your program start and the date IRCC received your study-permit application. IRCC calls that the lock-in date. For a date on or after September 1, 2024, you must finish at least half the program in class within Canada. A diploma studied mostly online doesn't become eligible merely because its field code is listed.
A private college delivering a public college's licensed curriculum is generally ineligible. For a same-province arrangement, a program begun after May 15, 2024 doesn't qualify. A new 2027 start falls outside both historical licensing exceptions. Check the actual delivering campus before paying a deposit; a public college's name alone doesn't settle the program's PGWP status.
