Scholarships for first-generation students in Canada

You're a first-generation student if you're the first in your family to go to college or university, though each provider writes its own definition. Our list has 1 award only for first-generation students and 5 awards based on financial need that you can use too. None of them has a published date coming up; they're automatic, rolling or waiting on next year's date. Each links to its provider, checked between September 11, 2026 and October 1, 2026.

Check each provider's definition

Being first-generation doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. Each provider writes its own rule about what your parents studied, so read the definition on the official page before you apply.

Some first-generation bursaries come from your school, not from a central form. Open “Who can apply and steps” in the table to see where each one starts.

Apply for student aid even if you're unsure

Government student grants don't need to be paid back. You apply through your provincial or territorial student aid program, and it works out what you can get from your costs and family income.

In Ontario, that's OSAP. Our OSAP guide explains who qualifies and how to apply.

Ask for help early

Your guidance counsellor and your future school's financial aid office answer these questions every day. Ask what first-in-family or need-based awards they know about once you've accepted an offer.

Run the Scholarship Finder to see every award you may fit, not only the group ones. For the overall plan, read how to apply for scholarships in Canada.

How this list works

Every award here comes from the same checked list as our Scholarship Finder. Each record links to the provider's own page and shows the day we last checked it. We never copy award details from aggregator sites.

Awards that are closed for this cycle are left out of the tables. They come back when the provider posts new dates. Dates refresh on their own, so a passed date drops off the page.

A listing isn't a promise that you qualify. Each provider sets its own rules and picks its own winners. Read the official page before you apply.
