Programs and Pathways

Programs and academic fit

Compare StFX pathways before choosing prerequisites

The biggest planning difference is degree architecture. Arts and Science versions of Applied Forensic Psychology and Aquatic Resources carry different course preparation; Engineering is a diploma-to-degree pathway; and Human Nutrition's dietetic practicum is a later selection step.

Applied Forensic Psychology

A limited-enrolment BA or BSc that integrates psychology with criminal-justice, clinical, legal, and correctional contexts.

Selection: The program page calls it the only undergraduate program of its kind in Canada; the BSc requires senior mathematics and sciences.

Aquatic Resources

An interdisciplinary BA or BSc focused on freshwater and ocean systems, sustainability, resource management, and human–ecosystem relationships.

Selection: The BA follows Arts prerequisites; the BSc requires pre-calculus or calculus plus two senior sciences.

Public Policy and Governance

An applied BA housed alongside the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government and focused on policy, governance, and public leadership.

Selection: StFX describes the program as one of only a few of its kind in Canada and emphasizes small classes and experiential work.

Climate & Environment

A BASc joining scientific analysis with social, political, and economic study of environmental problems.

Selection: Fourth-year students work with community groups, governments, or businesses, and the program is eligible for co-op.

Engineering

A two-year diploma or a three- or four-year Engineering Diploma with BSc option, followed by degree completion at Dalhousie or another institution.

Selection: Completion of the StFX diploma makes a student eligible to apply for a Dalhousie engineering seat; it is not an automatic BEng award from StFX.

Human Nutrition

A BSc with concentrations including Dietetics, Health Sciences, Food Entrepreneurship, and Food and Society, plus lab, community, research, and co-op options.

Selection: Admission to the integrated dietetic practicum is a later competitive step, not guaranteed by entering the undergraduate degree.

Three StFX-specific distinctions

  • Applied Forensic Psychology is described by StFX as Canada's only undergraduate program of its kind.
  • Public Policy and Governance studies alongside the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government.
  • StFX pioneered academic Service Learning in Canada and continues local course-based and immersion models.

Co-op, Research, and Career Outcomes

Co-op and experiential learning

Build work experience through co-op, service, research, and exchange

StFX's undergraduate co-op is a later-entry pathway with a seminar and three work terms. It sits alongside distinct Service Learning, undergraduate research, international exchange, and Coady Institute opportunities.

When students enter

Second- or third-year students apply; the current 2026–2027 application deadline was April 9, 2026, and a Fall 2027 co-op deadline is not yet published.

Work experience

The undergraduate program combines one professional-development seminar with three work terms and 12 months of full-time experience.

Eligible degrees

Options span BBA majors; selected BA and BSc disciplines; Human Nutrition; BASc Health; and BASc Climate & Environment.

Current fee model

Each of COOP 140, 410, 420, and 430 carries an $825 co-op fee, for $3,300 total, paid as courses are registered; work terms also carry two credits of tuition.

Beyond co-op

StFX also offers course-based and immersion Service Learning, undergraduate research internships, international exchange, and Coady youth programs.

Do not treat co-op as direct entry

Students normally apply in second or third year. The live page still names the April 9, 2026 deadline for the 2026–2027 application, so a 2027 deadline remains pending. The current fee model is $825 for each of four co-op courses, $3,300 total, plus two-credit tuition on each work term.
