High-school applicants must complete Grade 12, or the highest grade required for secondary graduation, with an overall average of 70% or higher including a minimum 70% in Grade 12 university-preparation English. An IB Diploma with a minimum grade of 24 is acceptable. CEGEP applicants need at least one full year of a DEC with a 70% overall average. GCE applicants need at least two Advanced Level and three Ordinary Level subjects with an overall 'C' average and no subject below 'D'.

Meeting the minimum is not an admission decision: the portfolio, process work, sketchbook, and essay are reviewed by faculty alongside the transcript.

NSCAD states that students are expected to provide materials for their classes, usually bought from the NSCAD Supply Store, and that where the university bulk-purchases materials the amount of the Materials Fee is published in the course outline at the first class meeting and charged automatically to the student account. The tuition tables carry an explicit note that some classes have a material fee not shown in the examples. New students also pay a $20 building access card fee, refunded $10 on return.

The page also states the university awards about $200,000 per academic year in one sentence and about $100,000 annually in the next, alongside more than 90 internal scholarships and bursaries and external funding that can top $40,000 per year.
