Ghanaian students can apply straight to Canadian universities. They use the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Some universities do publish the WAEC senior certificate. They list it as a credential they accept for admission. But Canada has no single national WASSCE grade conversion, document rule, English-test exemption, or application deadline.
Each university assesses your result. Often the faculty or program assesses it too. One school may publish a B3 rule. That rule is not automatically the requirement at another school. Build every application from that university's current pages. Use its Ghana, West Africa, program, document, and English-language pages.
Fast answer: apply with your school record and available predicted or final WASSCE results, match the correct WASSCE subjects to program prerequisites, follow the university's assigned WAEC verification route, and do not buy WES or book IELTS until the institution's rule shows that you need it.
Reviewed July 30, 2026 for students planning Fall 2027 entry. Fall 2027 dates are still being published by some universities. Recheck every deadline and fee on the official page linked below.
How to apply from Ghana to a university in Canada
Use this sequence:
- Choose a program before choosing a university. At the same school, Computer Science, Engineering, Nursing, Business, Arts, and Life Sciences can each need different WASSCE subjects. They can also need different supplements.
- Open the university's Ghana, West Africa, or international curriculum page. Check that WASSCE is an accepted credential and note how grades are assessed.
- Check every prerequisite. English is usually required. You may need Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or another senior subject. Which one you need depends on the program.
- Confirm English-language evidence separately. If you studied in English in Ghana, some schools may give you an exemption. But the university decides, not the applicant.
- Apply through the correct route. Ontario undergraduate programs commonly use OUAC; universities outside Ontario normally use their own portal or another application service.
- Complete the university portal checklist. Upload only what is requested. Complete supplements. Watch for missing-document notices.
- Arrange official WAEC results or verification exactly as assigned. These processes are different. They are a student upload, a scratch-card check, a certified Statement of Results, and direct examination-board transmission.
- Compare scholarships and full cost before accepting. An entrance award may cover only a small part of international tuition and living expenses.
- After an offer, obtain the PAL or TAL if required and apply for the study permit. Admission and immigration are separate decisions.
Canadian universities that accept WASSCE
These examples come from current official university publications. They show why a Ghanaian applicant must compare institutions instead of relying on a universal conversion table.
Canadian universities that accept WASSCE comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| University | Published WASSCE or WAEC requirement | Document or English-language note |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto | U of T lists the West African Examinations Council Senior School Certificate Examination as a minimum admission credential. Every applicant must also present senior-level English. They must also present the prerequisites for the chosen program. | You get a personalized document list after you apply. Ghana is on U of T's list of countries that may qualify for an English-test exemption. The university reviews at least four years of English-language study and supporting records. |
| University of Guelph | Guelph lists WAEC examination results for Ghana and currently states a minimum B3 on predicted grades. Required subjects still depend on the selected degree and major. | Guelph says scratch-card information is required to confirm final results. Meeting the published minimum does not guarantee admission. |
| Carleton University | Carleton's current international admissions viewbook lists WASSCE results for eight or nine subjects. It says it works out the admission average from the best six academic subjects. Prerequisites are part of those six. | Carleton says results must come directly from WAEC or be verified using scratch-card information. Applicants should recheck the live requirements for their intended entry term. |
| York University | York's 2026–2027 international handbook lists the West African Senior School Certificate Examination as an accepted credential. | York needs official transcripts. It also applies prerequisites for each program. It applies language rules and extra requirements where relevant. |
| University of Manitoba | Manitoba lists the WAEC Senior School Certificate as its general entrance credential. University 1 currently uses an equivalent C5 average across four senior academic courses. No grade may be below C6. Direct-entry programs publish their own subject and grade rules. | Some direct-entry routes are higher. Kinesiology, for example, currently publishes an equivalent B2 average across its named courses with no course below C6. These are Manitoba rules, not a Canada-wide WASSCE conversion. |
This is not a complete list of Canadian universities that may review WASSCE. Some institutions use interactive country selectors that do not expose a stable Ghana result in search, and others review the credential under a West Africa category. Before paying an application fee:
- locate the university's own Ghana, West Africa, or international high-school requirement;
- confirm that the page applies to undergraduate entry, not graduate admission or transfer;
- open the intended degree's prerequisite page;
- record the application and document deadlines separately;
- email the official admissions office if the credential or subject mapping is unclear.
What “minimum requirement” actually means
An accepted credential lets the application be assessed. It does not mean every passing WASSCE result is competitive.
Universities may consider:
- the best six or another defined set of academic subjects;
- all available school grades in addition to final external results;
- grades in required subjects;
- the strength of the applicant pool;
- program capacity;
- supplementary forms, essays, portfolios, auditions, or interviews;
- the consistency and authenticity of school and WAEC records.
The University of Guelph's published B3 minimum is useful evidence for a Guelph application. It should not go into a U of T, Carleton, York, Waterloo, UBC, or McGill prediction. A private table changes every WAEC grade into a Canadian percentage. It cannot copy how each university assesses.
For one full school example, see the University of Manitoba admissions guide. It compares WASSCE eligibility, University 1, and direct-entry requirements. It also compares program deadlines, tuition, and scholarships. It compares current official sources too.
Match WASSCE subjects to Canadian prerequisites
Start with the Canadian program's prerequisite list. Then ask the university how your final-year WASSCE subjects satisfy it.
Match WASSCE subjects to Canadian prerequisites comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| Canadian program area | Common prerequisite areas to verify | Ghana application check |
|---|---|---|
| Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences | English; sometimes no additional subject | Confirm which WASSCE English course satisfies the senior English prerequisite |
| Business or Commerce | English; often senior Mathematics or Calculus | Check whether Core Mathematics, Elective Mathematics, or another course is required and at what level |
| Computer Science or Mathematics | English, advanced Mathematics, and sometimes Calculus | Ask which WASSCE mathematics result satisfies each named prerequisite; do not assume one mathematics course covers both |
| Engineering | English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry; Calculus may also be named | Confirm every science and mathematics equivalency with the engineering faculty's international requirements |
| Life or Health Sciences | English, Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry; sometimes Physics | Check the exact degree because Nursing, Kinesiology, Biomedical Science, and general Life Science can differ |
| Architecture, Fine Arts, Music, or Design | Academic prerequisites plus portfolio, audition, or creative supplement | Track the creative submission as a separate deadline, not as part of the transcript |
A webpage may list only Ontario course codes such as ENG4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4U, or SPH4U. If so, do not convert them yourself. Use the institution's international curriculum page or ask admissions for a written answer. The faculty may interpret WASSCE subjects differently from another university.
Predicted grades, transcripts, and final WAEC results
Students often apply before final WASSCE results are available. A university may use a school transcript, current courses, and predicted grades. It may use these for an early or conditional review. It may then require final official results before registration.
Prepare:
- a transcript showing your senior secondary school record and courses in progress;
- predicted WASSCE grades issued through the method the university accepts;
- final WASSCE results when released;
- your exact examination name, month, year, and index number;
- a clear explanation for any difference in legal name across the passport, school record, and WAEC result;
- certified translations only if a requested document is not in the university's accepted language;
- postsecondary transcripts if you have attended any college or university, even if you do not want transfer credit.
Do not upload changed screenshots or edited result slips. Do not upload duplicate files. Do not upload a result from another examination sitting unless you label it correctly. Admission can be denied or revoked for false or incomplete academic information.
How WAEC confirmation and verification work
WAEC Ghana distinguishes several services:
- it does not issue duplicate certificates;
- it can issue a certified Statement of Results directly to an institution, public body, or employer;
- its verification service is available to organizations and institutions, not individual applicants;
- it can issue an Attestation of Results to an individual for their possession;
- its published fees can change and do not necessarily include courier delivery.
A Canadian university may use a different route. For example, Guelph and Carleton publish scratch-card verification language. Another institution may ask WAEC for results directly. Another may use its own applicant checklist. Follow the receiving university's instruction. Do this before you buy a service or send a document.
Do not order WES automatically
WASSCE acceptance and WES credential evaluation are separate questions. Canadian undergraduate universities usually assess secondary credentials under their own country and curriculum rules. A university may still request WES verification in a particular file, but an applicant should not assume that buying a report strengthens the application.
Use the credential evaluation guide to distinguish:
- a university's own admission review;
- official or verified examination results;
- document-by-document or course-by-course evaluations;
- transfer-credit assessment;
- an immigration-purpose Educational Credential Assessment.
Wait for a named provider, report type, recipient, reference number, and deadline before paying.
Do Ghanaian students need IELTS?
There is no Canada-wide answer. English-language proficiency and the senior English prerequisite are two separate requirements. They are not the same thing.
The University of Toronto's current English-language page gives a useful example. It says an applicant whose first language is not English generally needs evidence of proficiency. This is unless an exemption applies. Ghana is listed among the countries that may qualify when the applicant has studied in English for at least four years. But U of T makes the final exemption decision after reviewing the application and supporting records.
At another university:
- the required period of English-language education may differ;
- the school, country, curriculum, or language of instruction may affect eligibility;
- a letter from the school may or may not be accepted;
- IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo, Cambridge, or another option may be accepted with different scores;
- an English test may still be requested after review.
Check the rule before you book a test. But leave enough time to sit an accepted test and send official scores if required. A WASSCE English result can meet an academic prerequisite. It does not automatically meet the separate proficiency rule.
OUAC and applications outside Ontario
The Ontario Universities' Application Centre handles undergraduate applications to Ontario universities. A student at school in Ghana is normally in Group B. They are not taking Ontario high-school courses as Group A defines them.
OUAC transmits the application information to the selected Ontario universities. It does not create one shared international-document rule. After applying:
- each university normally sends its own applicant-portal login;
- the university assigns the supporting-document list;
- some records go directly to the university rather than to OUAC;
- supplementary forms can live in a separate faculty or university system;
- application, document, English-test, scholarship, and portfolio deadlines may all differ.
Waterloo's application guide shows the process. Full-time applicants apply through OUAC. Then Waterloo sends portal instructions after receiving the application.
For UBC, McGill, or another school outside Ontario, follow that school's own application steps. The student may also apply elsewhere in Canada. Even so, do not make an OUAC application for a non-Ontario university.
Fall 2027 timeline for a student in Ghana
Use this as a planning calendar, not as a substitute for the universities' date pages.
Fall 2027 timeline for a student in Ghana comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| Planning period | Work to complete |
|---|---|
| July–August 2026 | Build a program shortlist; confirm WASSCE acceptance, required subjects, English rules, total international cost, and scholarship eligibility |
| September–October 2026 | Open applications as they become available; prepare legal-name details, transcript requests, predicted-grade arrangements, and separate scholarship or nomination materials |
| October–December 2026 | Submit early enough to receive portal access; complete program supplements; check whether official or uploaded documents are required before the deadline |
| January–February 2027 | Meet university and program deadlines; submit assigned documents, English results, portfolios, interviews, and supplementary forms |
| February–May 2027 | Monitor portals and email; answer document requests; update results; compare offers, conditions, tuition, scholarships, residence, and refund rules |
| After accepting an offer | Follow the university's PAL or TAL process, prepare study-permit evidence, and verify the designated learning institution and program details |
| Before travel | Submit final official WAEC results, satisfy offer conditions, arrange housing and insurance, and carry the documents IRCC and the university require |
Some universities have already published Fall 2027 dates. For example, Waterloo lists January 15, 2027 for Engineering applications. It lists February 1 for most other programs. It lists February 1 for Engineering documents and February 15 for documents for most other programs. Those are Waterloo dates, not national deadlines.
Apply early enough to fix a document problem. Applying early does not allow a lower academic standard. A file that is incomplete can stay unreviewable even if the application was sent on time.
Scholarships for Ghanaian students in Canada
Costs and awards open now: Statistics Canada's preliminary 2026-27 average international undergraduate tuition is $42,062 across Canada and $50,088 in Ontario. This is before fees and housing. Our scholarships for international students page lists awards open right now from our Scholarship Finder. Each award has the university's own link and the date we checked it. Parents can use the guide for international families for proof of funds, custodians and health insurance.
There is no separate national scholarship application for every Ghanaian student. The strongest routes fall into four groups:
- Automatic international entrance awards based on the admission result.
- Separate university scholarship applications that may assess leadership, service, or financial need.
- Faculty or program awards for Engineering, Mathematics, Science, Business, Arts, or another area.
- External scholarships whose citizenship, nomination, school, subject, or return-home conditions you satisfy.
Current scholarship routes for a Fall 2027 applicant
Current scholarship routes for a Fall 2027 applicant comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| Route | Current application evidence | Value and caution |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship | For September 2027 entry, U of T requires school nomination by October 9, 2026. An admission application is due by October 16. The scholarship application and documents are due by November 6. | The award covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years. About 37 scholars are named each year. So eligibility is not a probability estimate or a guarantee. |
| UBC International Scholars Program | UBC says the 2027 application opens in September 2026. You must enter right from an accredited secondary school. You must work toward a first undergraduate degree. You must show leadership and very strong grades. You must also prove that you need real financial help. | A school or registered non-profit nomination and a detailed financial assessment are part of the process. UBC considers applicants for the applicable program category; do not describe every International Scholars award as automatically covering every cost. |
| UBC automatic international merit awards | UBC automatically considers eligible international applicants for IMES and OIS. This is after admission, if they apply by the stated admission deadline. Its current 2026–2027 IMES evidence lists CAN$10,000–$25,000 per year. It lists renewal for up to three more years. | The published value is current-cycle evidence, not a confirmed Fall 2027 amount. UBC says these merit awards do not account for financial need and may not cover the full cost of attendance. |
| York international entrance awards | York's current 2026–2027 schedule lists automatic award tiers. The totals are CAN$5,000, CAN$25,000, and CAN$37,500. The university decides curriculum equivalency. The high-value President's award needs its own application. | These values belong to the 2026–2027 award schedule. Do not carry them or its passed application dates into Fall 2027 until York publishes the next cycle. |
The Pearson schedule is already labelled for September 2027. UBC's International Scholars page is also clearly preparing for the 2027 Winter Session. But it has not yet published every date on the live page. The UBC merit and York automatic-award figures above belong to their clearly labelled 2026–2027 schedules. They are included only as current planning evidence.
For a Ghanaian student, the practical sequence is:
- ask the school head or counsellor about nomination-based awards before the admission application is due;
- separate awards that need financial evidence from automatic merit awards;
- submit the university application early enough to receive any applicant number required by the scholarship form;
- keep school-nomination, admission, scholarship, supporting-document, and residence deadlines in separate calendar entries;
- record whether the amount is one-time, annual, renewable, or intended to meet demonstrated need;
- build a full-cost backup plan because even a strong applicant may receive no competitive award.
Read the current award terms carefully:
- Is the scholarship open to international students?
- Is Ghana or African citizenship/residence relevant?
- Is a school nomination required?
- Does applying for admission automatically create scholarship consideration?
- Is there a separate form and earlier deadline?
- Is the amount one-time or renewable?
- What grades, course load, or tuition status must be maintained?
- Can it be combined with another award?
Waterloo's current entrance scholarship page shows why this detail matters. It lists automatic awards and international scholarships. It lists faculty awards and application-based awards. These include chances for students of African or Black descent. Values and eligibility vary by program and year. A passed 2026 award deadline is not a Fall 2027 deadline.
Never compare scholarship headlines alone. Calculate:
international tuition + compulsory fees + housing + food + insurance + books + transportation − confirmed renewable funding
A conditional or competitive scholarship should not be treated as money already secured.
After admission: PAL or TAL and study permit
A university offer is not a study permit. Most Ghanaian undergraduates also need immigration approval. They need it before they travel to study.
IRCC currently requires a study-permit applicant to assemble the applicable documents, including:
- a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution;
- a provincial or territorial attestation letter in most undergraduate cases, or a Quebec Acceptance Certificate where applicable;
- proof of identity;
- proof of financial support;
- an explanation of the study plan and other documents assigned by the online checklist;
- biometrics and, when requested, a medical examination, police certificate, or local visa-office document.
IRCC says the province or territory issues the PAL or TAL. Students should contact their school to learn the process. In many cases, the student accepts the offer and pays some or all tuition. This happens before the institution requests or releases the letter. Exemptions exist. Verify the current rule for the individual application.
Proof of funds
For a study-permit application submitted on or after September 1, 2026 outside Quebec, IRCC currently lists CAN$23,448 in first-year living expenses for one student. This amount excludes tuition and transportation. The student must also show how the full program will be funded when it lasts longer than one year.
IRCC examples of financial evidence include:
- first-year tuition or housing payments combined with other proof;
- bank statements for the past six months, including the month of the application or the month before, with documents that show where the money came from;
- a student or education loan;
- a Canadian bank account or qualifying guaranteed investment certificate;
- a bank draft;
- a sponsor letter supported by evidence of the sponsor's funds;
- a scholarship or Canadian-funded program letter.
The legal minimum does not promise that the budget is comfortable. A sudden deposit with no explanation is not a substitute for a credible funding history. Explain the source of funds and the plan for later years truthfully.
IRCC currently lists a CAN$150 study-permit fee and a CAN$85 individual biometrics fee. Fees, living-expense thresholds, PAL rules, and local document instructions can change. So check the government pages again right before submission.
Common mistakes to avoid
- using one university's B3 rule as a Canada-wide WASSCE cut-off;
- applying to a program without matching every required WASSCE subject;
- assuming WASSCE English automatically creates an IELTS exemption;
- ordering WES before a university requests it;
- sending a personal WAEC screenshot when direct or verified results are required;
- missing the document or supplement deadline after meeting the application deadline;
- describing an unconfirmed scholarship as guaranteed funding;
- choosing a school without checking that the institution and program support the intended study-permit and post-graduation plans;
- paying a third party that promises guaranteed admission, a guaranteed visa, or a job;
- hiding prior school, university, refusal, or financial information;
- waiting for final WASSCE results before researching prerequisites and application systems;
- copying a study plan or supplementary response that does not accurately represent the student.
Ghana-to-Canada application checklist
- Shortlist programs by academic fit, not ranking alone.
- Verify WASSCE acceptance on each university's official page.
- List every prerequisite and identify the WASSCE subject used to satisfy it.
- Save the current application, document, supplement, scholarship, and residence deadlines.
- Confirm whether Ontario choices use OUAC Group B.
- Ask the school how it issues transcripts and predicted results.
- Keep WAEC examination details and scratch-card information secure.
- Follow the assigned route for uploaded, official, confirmed, or verified results.
- Confirm the university-specific English-language rule.
- Complete essays, videos, portfolios, or interviews before their separate deadlines.
- Build a four-year cost plan and apply for every eligible award.
- Compare offer conditions before accepting.
- Obtain the PAL or TAL if required and use IRCC's current study-permit checklist.
- Keep copies of submitted forms, receipts, reference numbers, and portal confirmations.
