Gap years and deferring a university offer in Ontario

Most Ontario universities let a first-year student ask to push an accepted offer back by up to one year, but none promise to say yes. The order is the same almost everywhere: accept on time, meet every condition, then ask. None of the 11 universities compared here let you take college or university courses during a deferral. York is the only one that names a gap year to travel or work as a reason to defer. McMaster, Queen's and uOttawa want extenuating or exceptional circumstances.

Key facts

How long
One year at ten of the 11, plus military-service exceptions. TMU's page gives no length.
Before you ask
Accept the offer and meet every condition. Approval is never automatic.
During the year
No college or university courses. High school courses are fine at Waterloo, Guelph and Laurier.
Without a deferral
You reapply on OUAC. Out of high school, you'll usually apply as Group B.

Deferral or gap year: know which one you're planning

A deferral keeps your accepted offer and moves your start date. A gap year without a deferral means your offer lapses and you apply again next cycle. uOttawa spells this out: offers are valid only for the program, year and term listed, so starting later normally means a new application and fee.

What happens after an approved deferral varies. Waterloo sends a new offer in early 2027 and says you won't reapply on OUAC. Guelph issues a new offer in December 2027. Laurier asks you to reconfirm with a readmission form. Western's timeline tells deferred students to reapply to Western through OUAC by January 15.

Don't request a deferral as a backup. Waterloo warns that an approved deferral removes you from your classes and residence.

What every policy has in common

The rules line up closely across Ontario. You accept the offer first, you meet every condition in it, and then the university reviews your request. U of T and Waterloo both say they decide only once conditions are met, and uOttawa waits for your final transcript.

A deferral also belongs to one program. TMU says deferrals can't be transferred to another program. Guelph and Laurier say you can defer only the program you accepted, and Laurier sends you back to OUAC if you want a different one.

  • Accept on time. TMU and Laurier won't consider a request without an accepted offer.
  • Meet every condition, including final grades and documents.
  • Don't enrol at another college or university during the year.
  • Drop any courses you registered in if the deferral is approved.
  • Keep the approval email and your new offer somewhere safe.

Reasons universities accept

York is the clearest. It lists a gap year to travel or work, a delayed study permit, attending a yeshiva or religious institution, and mandatory military service. TMU names illness, financial hardship or a refused study permit. uOttawa names illness, military service or a study permit that came too late.

McMaster grants deferrals only for special extenuating circumstances, and Queen's for extenuating circumstances that stop you starting in the fall. Western weighs your reason along with your final average and your faculty.

Whatever your reason, write it plainly and include your plan for the year. Waterloo and uOttawa both ask you to summarize your plans on the form, and McMaster limits its explanation to 250 words.

What happens to your scholarship

This is where universities differ most, so read your award letter before you ask. U of T says approved deferrals usually keep eligible entrance scholarships. Waterloo holds President's and Merit scholarships until you start. TMU defers automatic entrance scholarships but values them on the grid for your new start year.

Other schools recalculate. Western reconsiders you for an admission scholarship using the values for the year you arrive. Carleton and uOttawa apply the rules in force for your new offer. Laurier reassesses you. Guelph says entrance scholarships and bursaries can't be deferred at all.

Need-based aid resets too. Waterloo tells Ontario students with an entrance bursary to reapply when the application opens in February 2027.

Residence, deposits and fees already paid

Residence doesn't cancel itself. York makes cancelling residence and dining plans your job. uOttawa bills the whole residence contract if you cancel after August 15 for a September start. Waterloo tells you to cancel in its Housing Hub, choosing deferral as the reason, to find out whether the deposit comes back. Guelph refunds its $750 residence deposit if your deferral is approved, and you apply again next year.

Money you've paid the university follows its own rules. McMaster keeps your admission deposit for the deferred offer. Western asks for a $500 deferral deposit in September unless a tuition deposit already covers it. Waterloo warns that OSAP money already sent to the university may have to be repaid to the National Student Loans Service Centre.

What you can do during the year

Nothing on these pages stops you working, travelling or volunteering during an approved deferral. College or university courses are the line. Waterloo says a deferral becomes void if you take post-secondary courses, and hiding them counts as academic fraud. TMU and Laurier can cancel your offer and make you reapply.

High school courses are a different story. Waterloo lets you take them for personal interest. Guelph allows extra high school courses. Laurier allows them but reassesses your scholarship and wants an updated transcript. McMaster's rule is stricter: it expects you not to return to secondary school.

Guelph also suggests a part-time first year instead of a deferral, except for co-op students. Fewer than 1.5 credits counts as part time there, which can change scholarships and OSAP.

Gap year without a deferral: applying again through OUAC

If you skip the deferral and apply next year, OUAC's rules decide your group. For Fall 2027, you're Group A only if you're taking at least one Ontario high school course, are under 21 on or before December 31, 2026, and have or are working toward an OSSD with six 4U/M courses. Otherwise you're Group B. The application places you automatically.

Group A students have the January 15 deadline. OUAC says deadlines and requirements can differ for Group B, so check each university early. Our OUAC Group A and Group B guide explains the difference, and the Ontario deadlines guide lists the dates.

Scholarship nominations can still work. Queen's says a gap-year student can be nominated for its Chancellor's Scholarship by their last full-time high school.

Timeline for a Fall 2027 deferral request

Most requests happen in summer, after final grades. These are the published dates. Where a university hasn't posted Fall 2027 dates, the Fall 2026 window is marked as the latest available.

  • June 1, 2027: earliest date an Ontario university can make Group A students accept. Guelph's deferral form opens the same day.
  • June 4: Queen's starts taking deferral requests at 12:00 a.m. ET.
  • July 1 to September 4: Waterloo's request window (Fall 2026, latest posted).
  • July 1 to September 11: York's window (Fall 2026, latest posted).
  • July 15, 2027: TMU's request date for Fall 2027 offers. Decisions by July 30, 2027.
  • July 31, 2027: Guelph's application and $100 fee.
  • August 1: Western and Laurier fall deadlines.
  • Mid-July to October 16: McMaster's window (2026-27, latest posted).
  • End of October: most Carleton students hear back.

For parents: questions to settle first

A deferral is a money decision as much as a school one. Before your child submits, check which deposits are non-refundable, when residence cancellation becomes expensive, and whether the scholarship survives. Laurier, for example, charges tuition at the rates for the year your child actually starts.

Help write a real plan for the year. Several forms ask for it, and a vague answer is easy to refuse. Our parent guide covers the rest of the process.

International and Caribbean students

Study permit timing is the most common reason international students defer. uOttawa requires you to have paid the non-refundable admission deposit and received your study permit before you ask. If the permit is refused, uOttawa won't accept a deferral and you'll need to reapply. TMU lists a refused permit as a valid reason, and York accepts a delayed one.

Waterloo extended its Fall 2026 request deadline to September 25, 2026 for students with study permit delays. Waterloo and McMaster both allow longer deferrals for mandatory military service at home. See our international students hub for documents and deposits.
