Student Life and Support
Student life at the University of Alberta
The U of A publishes five campuses in two cities, 46,201 students from 159 countries, and 38,000 students on North Campus alone across 150 buildings and 50 city blocks. Scale is the point — and so is the fee bill that comes with it.
Student groups
Over 475
Recognised groups holding over 3,000 events a year, per the page updated July 2026. Two other U of A pages still say 450 and 425.
Varsity athletics
Golden Bears and Pandas
22 teams and over 500 student-athletes across 37 sports facilities on two campuses. Augustana runs 13 Vikings teams separately.
Mandatory fees
$1,494.07
The 2026-2027 on-campus full-time non-instructional total, including the $182.50 U-Pass. Augustana's total is $1,276.95.
Know which fees you can and cannot opt out of
The Athletics and Recreation fee and the PAW Centre fee are published with no opt-out. The Students' Union Health Plan at $204.93 and Dental Plan at $199.84 can be opted out of, as can the APIRG fee, the Access Fund, and Course Material Access. The U-Pass is a mandatory assessment students themselves voted for in 2007, covering Edmonton, St. Albert and Strathcona County transit — and Augustana students are exempt from it entirely, which is why their fee total is lower. Exempt students cannot opt in.
Updated July 2026
Recognised student groups
The student groups page, marked 'Updated: July 2026', states that the University of Alberta recognises over 475 unique student groups and that recognised groups hold over 3,000 events for their members and invited guests each year. The Student Group Procedure has been replaced by Bylaw 220: Student Groups, under which the Students' Union plays an expanded role.

Current pages
Three different student-group counts are live at once
The student groups page, dated July 2026, says 'over 475 unique student groups'. The About page says 'More than 425 student groups'. The admissions home page says 'over 450 student clubs'. All three are current U of A pages.
The 475 figure is the only one carrying an explicit update date (July 2026), so treat it as the current count and the other two as stale marketing copy.

2026-2027 fees
The U-Pass is a mandatory fee with named exemptions
The U-Pass is $182.50 for 2026-2027 and the U of A states that in 2007 students voted to accept a mandatory fee assessment for it. All students registered on-campus in at least one for-credit course at the Edmonton campuses during Fall, Winter and/or Spring/Summer are assessed the fee. Augustana students are exempt, as are Executive MBA-only students, off-campus thesis graduate students, and Faculty of Extension students — and exempt students are not eligible to opt in.
