Computer Studies and co-op admission

Langara describes Computer Studies as a Diploma in the Department of Computer Science. It is a minimum two-year program with full-time or part-time study, January, May and September starts, and limited enrolment. The curriculum page lists a minimum of 60 credits, including required programming, database and networking courses, communications, a business course and electives.

Computer Studies has a separate co-operative education option. To participate, students must be enrolled in at least three program courses (nine credits, excluding EXPE 2300) and maintain at least a 2.6 GPA each term. They must also pass an employability interview and earn at least a C in EXPE 2300. These are entry conditions for the option, not a promise of a job.

Computer Studies admission uses English Category 3. Some admitted students still need additional English courses to meet the prerequisites of required courses. Admission to the program does not guarantee registration in every required class, so check the academic planner, prerequisite sequence and available sections before choosing a start term.

Compare the associate degree and web certificate

Computer Science leads to an Associate of Science Degree, while Computer Studies leads to a diploma. The associate degree page lists open enrolment, a two-year minimum, full-time or part-time study and an optional co-op component. Compare the receiving university’s requirements if further study is your goal; the credential name alone does not establish transfer credit.

Internet and Web Technology is a shorter, limited-enrolment certificate focused on web development and computing. It lists full-time study and January, May or September starts. The College says a Fall start can finish in three consecutive semesters; another start can take longer. Prior computing knowledge is not required, but the program’s Admissions tab still controls general and language eligibility.
