Compare the credential before the pathway
Calgary, Alberta
Use broad school and credential discovery first, then verify the chosen program's delivery, equipment, transfer and work-integrated learning conditions.

Choose a credential and purpose
Program discovery spans business, technology, health and wellness, community studies, entertainment arts, arts and sciences, upgrading and language learning. Credentials and purposes differ: career certificates and diplomas prepare for occupational fields, while Open Studies permits individual course registration and arts-and-sciences offerings can support further study. Compare the official program record rather than choosing from a school label alone. Check credential, number of terms, delivery mode, intake, applicant eligibility, admission requirements, course sequence and any equipment or placement obligations together.
Inspect a current program example
Software Development is a useful scoped example. Bow Valley College describes a four-term diploma covering planning, programming and quality-assurance testing, with practical projects and a required Windows-based laptop. It is marked open to international students and shows January 2027 in the intake area reviewed on September 13, 2026. Availability, course delivery and the PGWP-related information shown on a program record can change; international applicants should use the current program page and government rules when making a decision.
Understand transfer into BVC
Transfer into Bow Valley College is assessed rather than automatic. The College says students may earn up to 75% of a program through transfer, but eligibility includes acceptance, recognized prior post-secondary study, currency and standing conditions. Course-to-course assessment expects at least 80% alignment with the requested course's learning outcomes, and the general minimum is C, 64% or 2.0 on the College scale, with higher requirements possible. The confirmation fee must be paid before transfer-credit and PLAR grades can be awarded.
Confirm transfer-out decisions
Transfer out is controlled by the receiving institution. Bow Valley College publishes pathways and directs students to Transfer Alberta, but expressly says a pathway does not guarantee that another institution will admit the student or award credit. Open Studies can help a learner explore or complete selected courses that appear in career programs, yet successful course completion still does not promise admission to the target credential. Ask both institutions for current written advice before relying on a course as a prerequisite, block transfer or degree pathway.
Decision checklist
- Compare credentials and purposes before comparing course names.
- Verify program-specific delivery, intake and equipment.
- Obtain a current transfer assessment from the institution making the decision.
