Chinese students can apply directly to Canadian universities. They use the Senior Middle School or Senior High School Graduation Diploma. But Canada has no single national rule. The rules cover the Gaokao, Huikao or Xuekao, Senior 3 grades, CSSD verification, English tests, or admission cut-offs.

The receiving university controls the evidence. McGill, McMaster, Waterloo, UBC, SFU, Alberta and York each publish their own Chinese-curriculum rules. These rules are very different from each other.

Fast answer: choose the degree first, open that university's current China requirement, match every Senior 3 subject to the program prerequisites, disclose whether you will write Gaokao and which curriculum you follow, and order CSSD or another verification report only when the university tells you what to send.

How to apply to a Canadian university from China

Use this sequence:

  1. Choose the exact degree and campus. At the same university, routes can differ. Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Science, Health, Arts, Architecture, Music, and co-op routes can have different subjects, supplements, and capacity.
  2. Identify the curriculum being assessed. Say which curriculum the student follows. It may be the Chinese national curriculum. It may be IB Diploma (the International Baccalaureate diploma). It may be A levels. It may be AP (Advanced Placement courses and exams) plus a school diploma. It may be a Canadian curriculum. It may be a blended program.
  3. Open the university's China requirement. Note the required diploma and Senior 3 courses. Note the Huikao or Xuekao evidence and the Gaokao rule. Note any exception that applies to one province.
  4. Map every prerequisite. The subject may be Mathematics, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or English. It may be another subject. It must appear at the level the university accepts. That level is for that program.
  5. Separate admission English from an academic English subject. An English-medium school or English course does not create one national IELTS waiver.
  6. Apply through the correct route. Ontario choices commonly use OUAC Group B. UBC uses EducationPlannerBC; other universities use their own or another provincial service.
  7. Wait for the applicant checklist. The institution decides what is required. This may be an initial upload, a school-issued transcript, an official final document, a CSSD report, a test score, or a translation.
  8. Complete only assigned supplements. Essays, personal profiles, activity forms, videos, portfolios, auditions, interviews, and references are program-specific.
  9. Compare the full international cost and real scholarship conditions. Look at tuition, fees, housing, food, insurance, and travel. Also look at currency risk, deposits, and renewal terms.
  10. After admission, complete the study-permit process. These are separate decisions. They are a university offer, a PAL or TAL, a study permit, and entry to Canada.

Gaokao, Huikao, Senior 3, and CSSD requirements by university

These examples come from current official publications. They demonstrate why no private “Canada Gaokao conversion” should be applied to every institution.

Gaokao, Huikao, Senior 3, and CSSD requirements by university comparison table
UniversityPublished Chinese-curriculum evidenceImportant difference
McGill UniversitySenior high-school transcripts. Huikao or APT results you have. Final graduation records. Gaokao results if written.McGill normally expects averages of at least 85% in each year and in each prerequisite course. Pass/fail Huikao results can lead to a request for more external academic evidence.
McMaster UniversityFive Senior 3 academic subjects. Huikao or APT results where applicable. Confirmation that the applicant will write the Gaokao.Applicants not writing the Gaokao must provide a formal explanation. Required sciences must be at Senior 3, and McMaster publishes its own subject equivalencies.
University of WaterlooA Chinese High School Diploma and at least five Senior 3 academic courses. After that, final official CSSD-verified documents.Program prerequisites and supplements still control. Waterloo's Engineering, Mathematics, and other competitive programs use their own forms. They also use their own deadlines.
University of British ColumbiaIt covers the Chinese secondary-school curriculum. It also covers the general and degree-specific requirements. These are selected for the intended campus and degree.UBC says it can reconsider an offer for Chinese-curriculum students. This happens if the student misses the provincial Tier 1 Gaokao cut-off. Students who do not write Gaokao need competitive recognized AP, A-level, or IB results.
Simon Fraser UniversityChinese-curriculum applicants need the Senior Middle School Graduation Diploma. They also need Senior Year 3 academic results. They also need Gaokao results.SFU requires at least 70% in Senior Year 2 or 3 Mathematics on a 60% pass scale and makes offers conditional on program-dependent Gaokao results. IB and A-level applicants do not submit Gaokao.
University of AlbertaWhere this applies, send Joint Senior Middle School Graduation Exam results. Also send the Senior Middle School Diploma and the three-year transcript. Send university-entrance exam results too if you have finished them.The diploma and examination records must follow Alberta's issuing-authority rules. Five required admission subjects differ by program, and admission remains competitive.
York UniversitySenior 3 or Grade 12 graduation examinations for applicants from the People's Republic of China.York's country listing establishes the qualifying credential. It does not establish one guaranteed cut-off. The intended program can require stronger grades. It can also require prerequisites and a supplementary application.

This comparison uses evidence. It is not a full list of universities that can assess a Chinese credential. Check that the page applies to undergraduate admission. Also check it applies to the student's exact curriculum, province, campus, degree, and entry year.

Is Gaokao required in Canada?

There is no national answer:

  • SFU makes Chinese-curriculum offers conditional. You must send Gaokao results. The school says the required result depends on the program. IB and A-level applicants do not submit Gaokao.
  • UBC says a Chinese-curriculum offer can be reconsidered. This can happen if the applicant does not meet the provincial Tier 1 Gaokao cut-off. A student not writing Gaokao must present competitive results in recognized AP, A-level, or IB examinations.
  • McMaster asks for confirmation that the applicant will write Gaokao. A student not writing it must provide a formal explanation.
  • McGill requires the official final result when the student writes Gaokao. But its published assessment begins with school transcripts. It also begins with available Huikao or APT results.
  • Alberta lists university-entrance examination results when completed alongside the diploma, transcript, and relevant final school examinations.

“Gaokao accepted” does not mean Gaokao alone wins admission. Program prerequisites, school results, Huikao or Xuekao evidence, English proficiency, supplements, and capacity still apply.

Huikao and Xuekao are not handled identically

Huikao, Xuekao, and Academic Proficiency Test terminology can vary by province and university publication.

McGill requires Huikao or APT results when they are available. The grades must be numbers or letters. If a province reports only qualified or unqualified, or only pass or fail, McGill expects extra academic evidence. This also applies if the province does not offer the examination. The extra evidence can be ACT, SAT, AP results, school-based graduation examinations, or other stated evidence. Its page explains case-by-case review where none is available.

McMaster requires Huikao or APT results. But it exempts some applicants. It exempts those in provinces where the exam is not offered. It also exempts those without the relevant permanent residence or household registration. A Chinese national curriculum mixed with another international curriculum is reviewed case by case.

Do not invent a missing examination, convert pass/fail into a percentage, or hide a blended curriculum. Explain the province, hukou or registration context, curriculum, and examinations accurately in the application and follow the assigned checklist.

Match Senior 3 subjects to program prerequisites

An accepted diploma does not prove that the applicant has every required subject.

McMaster currently publishes these Chinese National Curriculum equivalencies:

Match Senior 3 subjects to program prerequisites comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally

Match Senior 3 subjects to program prerequisites comparison table
Senior 3 subjectMcMaster equivalency
MathematicsOntario Pre-Calculus and Calculus
BiologyOntario Grade 12 Biology
ChemistryOntario Grade 12 Chemistry
PhysicsOntario Grade 12 Physics

Those are McMaster's rules. They are not a national conversion table. Another university may classify a course differently. It may require a particular examination result. It may ask for a detailed syllabus.

Before applying:

  • list every required subject for the exact program;
  • confirm whether it must appear in Senior 3, Huikao or Xuekao, Gaokao, IB, A level, AP, or another record;
  • confirm any minimum subject grade;
  • ask how a blended or international curriculum is evaluated;
  • preserve course descriptions where a title does not make the content clear;
  • distinguish eligibility from the stronger results normally needed in a competitive program.

McGill's China page is one example. It requires mathematics plus set sciences for Engineering and Science groups. It requires mathematics for Management. It requires program-specific mixes for Nursing, Kinesiology, Architecture, and other degrees. Its normal 85% minimum does not guarantee admission. This is true where demand is stronger.

CSSD and CHSI document verification

CSSD, the Center for Student Services and Development under China's Ministry of Education, operates CHSI and verifies:

  • Chinese secondary-education qualifications;
  • Gaokao scores;
  • Huikao or Academic Proficiency Test results;
  • higher-education student records and qualifications;
  • university transcripts and degree information.

CSSD says it can issue Chinese- and English-version reports. These are for the relevant high-school qualification, Gaokao, and Huikao records. Its application instructions list different supporting documents for each report type.

Do not order every report in advance

The correct process is:

  1. Submit the university application.
  2. Read the applicant portal's exact document list.
  3. Check which route the university wants. It may be an upload, an official school transmission, a CSSD report, or another route.
  4. Match the report type: diploma, Gaokao, Huikao, transcript, or higher-education record.
  5. Use the university's requested recipient, reference number, language, and delivery method.
  6. Monitor the university portal until the item is accepted.

An uploaded scan can support an initial review while a CSSD report later clears an offer condition. One does not automatically replace the other.

Keep passport, application, school, and CSSD names consistent. Disclose every secondary and postsecondary institution attended. Do not edit grades, omit an examination sitting, translate a document yourself when certified evidence is required, or purchase an unofficial “expedited verification” promise.

WES is not an automatic requirement

Do not order a WES evaluation just because the applicant studied in China. Undergraduate universities often use their own country rule to check Chinese secondary credentials. They may ask for CSSD.

Waterloo's document guidance says a WES evaluation may be requested and that instructions are provided after application. “May be requested” is not a universal requirement.

Use the credential evaluation guide to distinguish university admission assessment, official Chinese verification, transfer-credit review, WES reports, and immigration-purpose Educational Credential Assessments.

Chinese national curriculum versus IB, A levels, AP, and Canadian curricula

The student's location does not decide the curriculum. A school in China can teach IB or British-patterned A levels. It can teach AP with an American or other diploma. It can teach a Canadian provincial curriculum. It can also teach the Chinese national curriculum or a blended program.

Disclose:

  • every curriculum and awarding authority;
  • every school attended;
  • anticipated and completed examinations;
  • predicted and final results;
  • whether the student is writing Gaokao;
  • whether Huikao or Xuekao applies in the province;
  • any postsecondary enrolment after graduation.

UBC's recognized non-Gaokao examples and SFU's IB/A-level exemption are part of their own policies. McMaster says blended curricula are evaluated case by case. Do not assume a rule transfers to another university.

English-language requirements for students in China

There is no single Canadian IELTS rule. There is also no automatic exemption for every international school.

A university can consider:

  • the applicant's first language;
  • the language of instruction;
  • the number of recent full-time years in an English-language system;
  • the country and curriculum of study;
  • a school letter or declaration;
  • IELTS Academic, TOEFL, Duolingo, CAEL, PTE, Cambridge, or another accepted test;
  • minimum overall and component scores;
  • an approved pathway or academic-English program.

According to McGill's China page, official English-test results are required. There is an exception if the applicant meets its published exemption conditions. Waterloo uses its own language and education-history test. Waterloo can assign a Declaration of English Language Exemption in the applicant portal.

Before you pay for a test, check the rule. Still allow enough time to take an accepted test. Allow time too to send official scores by the document deadline. A test score cannot stand in for a required Senior 3 English or program prerequisite. And an academic English course does not necessarily replace proof of language proficiency.

OUAC and application routes from China

The Ontario Universities' Application Centre handles undergraduate applications to Ontario universities. A student who goes to school in China is normally Group B. This is under the current OUAC guide. International applicants do not meet every Group A condition.

OUAC is not a national portal and does not make admission decisions. After submitting:

  • the university normally issues its own applicant account;
  • transcripts and verification reports may go to the university;
  • English evidence and supplements can use separate systems;
  • each institution controls international eligibility and deadlines.

UBC uses EducationPlannerBC. McGill, Alberta, Waterloo, McMaster, SFU, York, and other schools post their own application steps. Use the path that the university names. Do not rely on an agent's general checklist.

Published examples:

  • Waterloo lists these dates. For Engineering applications, January 15, 2027. For Engineering documents, February 1. Most other applications have February 1. Most other documents have February 15.
  • On its current China page, McGill lists January 15 for admission applications. It lists March 1 for supporting documents. Major scholarships and some programs have earlier or separate dates.
  • UBC says its application opens in early October. Its standard deadline is January 15. Its current page still has 2026 cycle details. Confirm the Fall 2027 cycle before you rely on them.
  • UBC's International Scholars Program says 2027 applications open in September 2026.

These dates do not create one Canada-wide deadline. A scholarship or faculty can be earlier or later. So can a portfolio, audition, English test, housing application, or document condition.

Scholarships for Chinese students in Canada

Costs and awards open now: Statistics Canada's early 2026-27 average international undergraduate tuition is $42,062 across Canada. In Ontario it is $50,088. These amounts are before fees and housing. Our scholarships for international students page lists awards open right now from our Scholarship Finder. Each award has the university's own link and the date we checked it. Parents can use the guide for international families for proof of funds, custodians and health insurance.

Search four categories:

  1. automatic international entrance awards;
  2. application-based merit scholarships;
  3. school-nominated or need-based international programs;
  4. faculty, program, or legitimate external awards.

Read the current rules for eligibility, value, renewal, nomination, citizenship, and combination. UBC's International Scholars Program for 2027 needs a school or non-profit nomination. It also needs significant financial need. It needs direct entry from secondary school. It needs a separate process. It is not an automatic full scholarship.

Compare:

international tuition + compulsory fees + housing + food + health insurance + books + travel − confirmed renewable funding

Do not describe a nomination, competitive application, “up to” amount, or agent promise as secured funding. Use the engineering, computer science, business, and health sciences guides to build a program-first shortlist before comparing awards.

Canada study permit from China

Admission and immigration approval are separate. For most Chinese undergraduates, IRCC's current document guidance includes, where applicable:

  • a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution;
  • a provincial or territorial attestation letter, or a Quebec CAQ;
  • a valid passport and identity evidence;
  • proof of financial support;
  • a letter of explanation and the documents assigned by the online checklist;
  • biometrics and, when required, a medical examination, police certificate, or local visa-office record.

IRCC says you normally apply for a study permit online. The personalized checklist controls. The current China or local visa-office instructions also control.

PAL, TAL, and Quebec CAQ

IRCC says most postsecondary applicants need a PAL or TAL unless an exemption applies. The student usually contacts the school after accepting an offer. The student may need to pay part or all of the tuition before the school starts its process.

A PAL or TAL is linked to the school and study-permit cap year. A 2026 letter normally expires December 31, 2026 and cannot be carried into another cap year. Quebec applicants generally follow the CAQ process.

Proof of funds

For a study-permit application submitted on or after September 1, 2026 outside Quebec, IRCC currently lists CAN$23,448 in first-year living expenses for one student. You also need first-year tuition and transportation. A longer program also needs an explanation of funding for its full duration.

IRCC examples include tuition or housing payments with other evidence. Other examples are bank statements and education loans. More examples are bank drafts, sponsor evidence, and scholarships. Qualifying Canadian accounts or guaranteed investment certificates are examples too. You do not have to submit every item.

Explain the source, ownership, and availability of funds truthfully. Explain their history and currency transfer. Recheck the annual amount, local instructions, and fees. Recheck the exchange rate right before applying.

The Student Direct Stream is closed

IRCC closed the Student Direct Stream on November 8, 2024. A new Chinese applicant now uses the regular study-permit route. Do not pay for an “SDS package,” guaranteed decision, or unofficial fast track.

Stellar Advisers provides educational planning information, not immigration or legal advice. No school, agent, or adviser can guarantee admission, scholarship funding, a study permit, work authorization, or permanent residence.

Common mistakes Chinese applicants should avoid

  • treating Gaokao as universally required or universally optional;
  • hiding that the student will not write Gaokao;
  • assuming Huikao, Xuekao, and APT evidence is identical in every province;
  • using one university's grade or subject conversion at another institution;
  • omitting a school, curriculum, examination, or postsecondary record;
  • failing to match Senior 3 Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or English to program prerequisites;
  • assuming international-school attendance guarantees an English-test waiver;
  • ordering WES or every CSSD report before the university requests it;
  • submitting a scan when official school or CSSD delivery is required;
  • missing the document or supplement deadline after meeting the application deadline;
  • preparing a generic personal statement instead of the actual program prompt;
  • describing a competitive scholarship as guaranteed funding;
  • relying on the closed Student Direct Stream;
  • using an old proof-of-funds amount;
  • paying a third party that promises guaranteed admission, visa approval, employment, or permanent residence.

China-to-Canada application checklist

  • Shortlist exact programs and campuses by academic, financial, and personal fit.
  • Identify the awarding curriculum and disclose every school attended.
  • Record the university's diploma, Senior 3, Huikao or Xuekao, and Gaokao rules.
  • Match every program prerequisite to an accepted senior subject.
  • Save separate application, document, supplement, English, scholarship, and housing dates.
  • Confirm whether Ontario choices use OUAC Group B.
  • Arrange predicted grades and official school records.
  • Order only the CSSD or external evaluation the university requests.
  • Confirm the university-specific English-language policy.
  • Complete program-specific profiles, essays, videos, portfolios, auditions, interviews, or references.
  • Build a multi-year cost plan and apply for eligible international awards.
  • Compare offer conditions, deposits, refunds, residence, and final-document rules.
  • Obtain a PAL or TAL if required and follow IRCC's current online checklist.
  • Keep copies of every form, report, receipt, reference number, and portal confirmation.
