Yukon University

YukonU traces its history to the Whitehorse Vocational and Technical Training Centre founded in 1963, became Yukon College in 1983, moved the Whitehorse campus up the hill in 1988, and was granted university status in spring 2020, when all thirteen campuses were renamed Yukon University. The Whitehorse campus was opened with a potlatch in October 1988 and named Ayamdigut—a Tlingit name meaning "she got up and went"—by Mrs. Angela Sidney.

The college roots are not a footnote: trades, upgrading, and vocational certificates are still a large share of what YukonU delivers.

Degrees are a short list: Business Administration, Indigenous Governance, Northern Environmental and Conservation Sciences, Social Work, and two Education (YNTEP) routes—degree and after-degree. Public Administration is the only graduate listing. Several programs, including Heritage and Culture, Millwright, Pipe Trades, and Carpentry for women, are currently marked "Not accepting applications."

YukonU adds that individual program application dates may vary and that dates are subject to change.

This replaces the earlier position that no final Fall 2027 deadline existed. The dates are university-wide; limited-intake programs still close earlier.

Verified current-cycle examples: the Bachelor of Social Work closed April 14, 2026 and YNTEP closed April 17, 2026, both with a single intake per year, and Northern Environmental and Conservation Sciences uses a May 1 deadline for Fall and November 15 for Winter.

The named April and May dates belong to the Fall 2026 intake. Expect an equivalent mid-April window for Fall 2027 and confirm on each program page rather than relying on the July 15, 2027 university-wide close.

Published current examples include English 12 at 65% for Northern Studies, Liberal Arts, Northern Outdoor and Environmental Studies, Early Learning, and Visual Arts; English 12 at 65% plus Math 11 (Foundations or Pre-Calculus) for Business Administration and Aviation Management; English 12 at 65% plus Math 12 (Pre-Calculus) at 65% plus Chemistry 11 for Earth Sciences; and English 10 and Math 10 for Culinary Arts.

Yukon University: International admission requirements by program · Verified August 15, 2026

Academic Regulation 2.08 allows an applicant who will be at least 19 before the first day of classes to be admitted by meeting the applicable entrance course requirements, even without a Secondary School Graduation Certificate or Adult Graduation Diploma. Regulation 2.09 requires the Registrar's permission for anyone under 17, and applies the same age rules to open studies. Students may take up to six credits per term as an open-enrolled student without applying to a program, though some professional or limited-enrolment programs exclude open enrolment.

YukonU states that applications without official transcripts cannot be processed. High school graduates submit an official transcript; current Grade 12 students submit a transcript plus their most recent report card and arrange a final transcript later; mature students—defined here as 19 or older, or 17 and out of school for at least one full academic year—submit a high school transcript and may be required to write University Assessments. Letters of acceptance and all later correspondence are emailed, and registration is not automatic after an offer.

IQAS is the only evaluator named across every program table, and YukonU recommends starting the evaluation before or as soon as you apply.

Direct-entry applicants must supply a final secondary school transcript; where the deadline falls before secondary studies end, YukonU issues a conditional offer with a stated transcript deadline and deregisters students who miss it. Outstanding prerequisite conditions give a student two terms to complete the course or be moved into University Access Pathways and reapply. Missing documents must reach the Office of the Registrar by the first day of term. A wait list is created when a program is full, and refused applicants are told the reason, how to upgrade, and their right of appeal.

Business Administration

A Yukon-made Bachelor of Business Administration, diploma, and certificate with northern and decolonial context, community or online delivery in some courses, and Yukon First Nations core competency.

Indigenous Governance

A 90-credit Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Governance. At least 45 credits must be completed at YukonU, and many courses are available by distance.

Northern Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Years three and four of a University of Alberta BSc in Environmental and Conservation Sciences, Northern Systems major. Students complete the first 60 credits at YukonU or another recognized institution; the University of Alberta confers the degree.

Social Work

A University of Regina Bachelor of Social Work delivered at YukonU. Entry follows 30 university credits, a 70% average, named English and social-work courses, and supplementary selection; qualified Indigenous applicants have half of the limited seats reserved.

Yukon Native Teacher Education Program

A four-year, 120-credit University of Regina Bachelor of Education with northern specialization, cultural camp, practica, and internship. Applicants complete YukonU and University of Regina admission steps.

Science pathways

The 30-credit Science certificate commonly supports transfer into second year of a BSc. Northern Science (Biological Sciences) and Earth Sciences diplomas provide additional northern field and laboratory routes.

Public Administration (MPA)

YukonU's only graduate listing, delivered online by the University of Alaska Southeast. UAS sets tuition; YukonU publishes an average of CAN$1,400 to $2,800 per course and states the programme is ineligible for NASPAA national accreditation because of its size.

Trades, vocational, and upgrading

Carpentry, Electrical, Welding, Heavy Equipment Technician, Commercial Driving, Culinary Arts, Health Care Assistant, Practical Nurse, and University Access Pathways make up a large share of the catalogue. Several trades routes are currently marked as not accepting applications.

Two degrees are YukonU's own: the Bachelor of Business Administration and the Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Governance. Three are partnered—the University of Alberta confers the BSc in Northern Environmental and Conservation Sciences, and the University of Regina confers both the Bachelor of Social Work and the YNTEP Bachelor of Education. The Public Administration MPA is delivered by the University of Alaska Southeast. Reading the credential rather than the campus name is the single most important comparison step here.

YukonU describes the BBA as "distinctive in that it has been created from a de-colonial perspective," rooted in low population densities, vast distances, remoteness, and higher costs. Entry is English 12 at 65% plus Math 11 (Foundations or Pre-Calculus). The certificate, diploma, and degree ladder carries completion limits of five, eight, and ten years respectively, and graduation requires a cumulative GPA of 2.00 plus the Yukon First Nations Core Competency. Many courses run part-time day or evening in Whitehorse, and several are available through the community campus network or by distance. The capstone places student teams on a real northern business, government, or nonprofit problem.

YukonU states many Business Administration courses have recently been revised and that transfer agreements are currently pending—verify BCCAT transferability with a program advisor before planning to move credits elsewhere.

The Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Governance requires 90 credits including FNGA 341 or 342 and the FNGA 343 capstone, a residency requirement of 50% (45 credits) completed through YukonU, a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, and the Yukon First Nations Core Competency. Admission is English Studies 12 at a minimum 65% OR five years of manager-level work experience. Many courses are available by distance through web conferencing or online delivery, so students can participate from home, any YukonU campus, or off-campus locations.

YukonU delivers years three and four of a University of Alberta BSc in Northern Environmental and Conservation Sciences with a major in Northern Systems, taught by both U of A and YukonU faculty. Students first complete up to two years (60 credits) of transferable coursework—at YukonU or elsewhere—and those coming from a YukonU diploma should complete at least 24 credits (8 courses) from the recommended list. Transfer credit requires a grade of C- or higher, and applicants must also meet the entry requirements of the U of A Faculty of Agricultural, Life, and Environmental Sciences, including a minimum admission GPA of 2.3 plus Biology 12, Chemistry 12, and Pre-calculus 12. Students apply directly to the University of Alberta after pre-screening by the ENCS Program Advisor.

Yukon University: Northern Environmental and Conservation Sciences degree · Verified August 15, 2026

The University of Regina grants the BSW and the program is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. Entry requires a minimum 30 university credit hours with a 70% average, including two English courses at the 100 level or higher with a 70% combined average, Social Work 200, and 21 general university credits. There is one intake per year with limited seats, half reserved for qualified Indigenous applicants, and YukonU states qualified Indigenous applicants are given first priority. The full package adds a personal statement, three references sent directly by referees, a current Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check, and a resume, followed by an interview with faculty and community-based social workers in April and early May.

The Fall 2026 BSW deadline was April 14, 2026 and the YukonU application fee was waived for that cycle. Confirm both the Fall 2027 deadline and whether the fee waiver repeats.

Yukon University: Bachelor of Social Work delivered with the University of Regina · Verified August 15, 2026

YNTEP began in 1989 in response to Together Today for our Children Tomorrow. It is a four-year, 120-credit Bachelor of Education credentialed by the University of Regina; graduates qualify for both Saskatchewan and Yukon teacher certification and are eligible for certification throughout Canada. Seats are first offered to qualified applicants of Indigenous heritage, with priority given to Yukon First Nation applicants. Applicants who did not graduate from high school can enter by being out of full-time secondary school for at least two years, demonstrating ability to succeed through life or work experience, and reaching a minimum 65% in ENGL 060 or equivalent plus acceptable Math assessment scores. Applicants are accepted only after both YukonU and the University of Regina confirm acceptance.

The Fall 2026 YNTEP deadline was April 17, 2026 with one intake per year and a waived application fee; confirm the Fall 2027 equivalents before planning.

Yukon University: Education (YNTEP) degree: structure, priority, and deadlines · Verified August 15, 2026

Public Administration is listed as a graduate credential but the degree is delivered by the University of Alaska Southeast, online through synchronous and asynchronous classes. UAS is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and is an institutional member of NASPAA, though the page states plainly that "Due to the size of the MPA program, we are ineligible for national accreditation with NASPAA." Tuition is set by UAS, with course costs averaging CAN$1,400 to $2,800 per course.

All campus housing sits at Ayamdigut in Whitehorse: the 500 Building holds 47 individual dorm spaces across 48 units with communal kitchens and washrooms and is attached to the main campus; the 510 Building is a quieter detached dorm with 13 units restricted to students over age 25; the 500A Building has 8 two-bedroom split-level family apartments; and the 520 Building offers 60 individual rooms in two- and three-bedroom self-contained apartments once its transition from family units is complete. Units come furnished with utilities included, and campus WiFi is covered by the Student IT Fee.

Refunds tighten fast: cancelling within 30 days of move-in forfeits the damage deposit, and after 45 days of occupancy no housing fee is refunded.

Both are current YukonU publications.

This guide does not pick between two official figures. Check the amount displayed in the housing portal at the moment you pay, and keep the receipt—the fee is non-refundable in every published refund scenario.

The review-date table is undated and recurring: the Fall intake opens March 1 and closes July 15 with reviews starting May 27, the Winter intake runs October 1 to December 15 with reviews from November 15, and the Summer intake runs January 1 to April 1. YukonU warns the application period may close earlier than the stated deadline if it receives more applications than it can accommodate.

YukonU tells international students that "Whitehorse is currently experiencing a shortage of housing" and highly recommends making accommodation arrangements before arriving. Off-campus listings are described as coming from Facebook Marketplace and groups, Kijiji, and Yukon News, with heat, electricity, internet, and cable usually budgeted separately from rent. Students attending the Yukon School of Visual Arts in Dawson City have no campus housing option at all—independent off-campus housing is the only route.

Effective for programs and courses within the 2026-27 academic year starting September 1, 2026: undergraduate credit courses $152 per credit or $456 per three-credit course; University Access Pathways courses $96 per credit or $288 per three-credit course; full-time vocational and Culinary Arts $2,100 per term; pre-apprenticeship trades programs $3,275 per program; and graduate-level courses $500 per credit. Thirty credits of undergraduate study is therefore $4,560 in base tuition before fees.

YukonU sets one Canada-wide rate and extends it to Alaska residents—there is no separate out-of-territory Canadian rate.

Application fee $30 domestic and $100 international. Per term: Student Union fee $55 full-time and $15 part-time, technology fee $105 full-time and $26 part-time, and student activity fee $37 full-time and $20 part-time—$197 per term for a full-time domestic student. Invigilation is $75 for the first three hours plus $25 per hour after that, and students who miss the payment deadline are blocked from future registration and lose access to transcripts and library loans.

Health and dental insurance is mandatory for all international students at $216.30 per term, optional in Spring if not enrolled. The deposit is refunded in full only if YukonU cancels the program; an IRCC study-permit refusal refunds the deposit less a $300 processing fee if the refusal letter is provided within three months.

A tuition-times-credits calculation understates the real cost in exactly the northern, land-based, and studio courses that make YukonU distinctive.

The Yukon University Entrance Scholarship offers five awards of up to $3,500 toward first-year tuition over two sequential semesters for students with a minimum 80% average, prioritising graduates of Yukon high schools, then Canadian post-secondary institutions, then Canadian high schools outside Yukon. The Academic Potential Entrance Award offers one award of up to $3,500 for applicants who cannot supply a Canadian transcript averaging above 80%, requiring an essay and a community letter of recommendation. The Winter Entrance Award offers two awards of up to $1,750 toward Winter tuition on financial need. All require Canadian citizenship or permanent residence and full-time registration of at least 9.0 credits.

The two $3,500 awards carry a May 15, 2027 deadline while their eligibility text still names Fall 2026 entry—YukonU has not yet updated the semester label, so confirm the entry term with the Funding Advisor before applying.

YUSU describes itself as the voice of undergraduate students, providing representation, leadership, advocacy, and direction through an elected Executive Council, and covering academic, cultural, environmental, social, extracurricular, and athletic activities across Whitehorse and the community campus network. It is ensconced in legislation via the amended Yukon University Act and incorporated under the Societies Act. All students registered in credit programs at the Ayamdigut campus pay the Student Union fee, and the published executive roster runs from President to Board of Governors Representative and Student Senators.

Activities and student-run clubs are free and open to current students and staff only. Four clubs are currently listed: the YukonU Beading Club, which meets weekly with Elders on campus and provides supplies free to students; the YukonU Volleyball Team, aiming at local tournaments; the Technology Club; and the YukonU Rotaract Club, founded in 2025 and sponsored by the Whitehorse Rendezvous Rotary Club. YukonU advertises paid student research roles throughout the year, directed studies, scholarly-activity support, and field or lab work. Its Research Centre focuses on northern questions including climate, biodiversity, permafrost, and mining.

Program-specific practice

YNTEP includes practica and an internship; Social Work includes professional preparation under the University of Regina route; and northern science programs emphasize field and laboratory learning. Confirm placement sequence and eligibility on the exact program page.

YukonU states: "We are a national leader in the number of paid student researchers, and we aim to hire more students every year." Students can work with faculty or at the YukonU Research Centre, and hiring runs all year—full-time, part-time, summer, or during the semester. Published student stories include a master's student studying industrial disturbance and wolverines in the Klondike goldfields with the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nation and the Government of Yukon Department of Environment, and an international student who progressed to teaching introductory chemistry and running the Research Centre lab.

The BBA instead ends in a capstone where student teams work under faculty and community guidance on a live challenge brought by a northern business, government, or nonprofit, producing a professional consulting presentation and report.
