Start with the private-rental market

Camosun says it currently has no on-campus residences or dormitories. Students generally rent apartments, condominiums, basement suites or rooms in shared houses. The college’s rental guide lists rents from $900 to more than $2,000 monthly and says shared accommodation usually costs less. The page does not date that range; compare current listings rather than treating it as a quote or market measurement. The first student-housing project at Lansdowne has funding approval, but it is not current room inventory.

Price the commute to the correct campus

Match the search to the selected program before choosing a neighbourhood. Camosun identifies Interurban in Saanich and Lansdowne in Saanich and Oak Bay, while noting that Greater Victoria municipality names are often used interchangeably. Test the bus, bicycle or driving time to the correct campus. A lower rent farther from Saanich or Victoria can add transportation time and cost, so compare the complete trip rather than the listing's city label.

View and verify before paying

View the accommodation before agreeing to rent or paying, or ask someone you trust to view it. Camosun says an in-person long-term search can help avoid scams and suggests temporary accommodation while searching. Public listing sites are leads only: Camosun does not inspect units or interview landlords, and its main housing page does not endorse or guarantee third-party accuracy, legality, privacy or security. Rental applicants can prepare a cover letter, references and Renting it Right certificate; landlords cannot charge an application fee.

Read the agreement and deposit rules

Read the written tenancy agreement before signing, keep a copy, and ask how notice or early departure affects rent. Confirm utilities, internet, parking, pets and whether new roommates can be added.

For tenancies covered by the cited BC rules, Camosun's guide says a security deposit can be no more than half one month's rent. A permitted pet deposit can also be up to half a month's rent. Discuss rent, bills, chores and guests with every roommate before committing. Its rights page warns that the provincial Residential Tenancy Act does not cover every arrangement, including a common example where a tenant shares a kitchen or bathroom with the owner.
