For Fall 2027, Canadian universities accept CAPE through different admission rules. U of T asks for six units. McMaster asks for four subjects, three at Unit II. Memorial adds a CAPE average of 3 from Winter 2027 onward. Compare your exact subjects, English evidence and degree prerequisites before choosing where to apply.
Reviewed October 18, 2026 for Fall 2027. The comparison distinguishes current policies from older editions. A published minimum allows consideration. Strong grades can't replace a missing required subject, and meeting a minimum doesn't secure admission to a competitive program.

| University and official rule | CAPE units and grades | Program prerequisites | English scope | Cycle and verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto | Six CAPE units. This curriculum page doesn't publish one CAPE grade floor for every program. | Pure or Integrated Mathematics at CAPE level for a Calculus prerequisite; other prerequisites at CAPE level. | Academic English at CSEC or CAPE level. Separate proficiency route accepts CSEC English I or II. | Current policy checked October 18; program competition varies. |
| Queen's University | CAPE diploma with at least six unit courses. Competitive average II or B for consideration. | Prerequisites at the two-unit level, except Communication Studies. Engineering names Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics at Unit II, plus Communication Studies. | Communication Studies is named for the programs shown. English-language proficiency is a separate check. | Current CAPE policy; Commerce letter-grade wording needs clarification below. |
| York University | CAPE diploma with at least six units, at least three at Unit 2, plus three CSEC results. Unit grades 1, 2 or 3; overall minimum 3 out of 7. | Prerequisites at Unit 2 with minimum grade 3 unless another rule is stated. Higher program grades can apply. | Meet your program's English prerequisite and York's separate proficiency rule; no blanket Caribbean waiver is stated here. | Latest available 2026-2027 handbook; confirm Fall 2027 requirements with York. |
| University of Manitoba | At least two CAPE-level courses plus three CSEC courses. University 1: equivalent III (70%) average, no course below IV (60%). | Engineering: equivalent II (80%) average, no course below III (70%), across English, Pre-Calculus Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics; at least two at CAPE level. | English or first-language literature for University 1; Engineering names English. Proficiency remains separate. | Current program tables; percentages are Manitoba's own equivalents. |
| McMaster University | Four subjects, three at CAPE Unit II. The current CAPE section doesn't print a general admission grade floor. | Both units of Pure Mathematics cover Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Biology, Chemistry and Physics each need Units 1 and 2 for the listed Ontario science equivalent. | The better of CSEC English B, or CAPE Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies. Proficiency is separate. | Current policy; don't import a grade floor from an older summary. |
| Wilfrid Laurier University | Three CSEC plus at least two Unit 2 courses. Two Unit 1 courses can replace one Unit 2 unless a specific Unit 2 is required. Honours minimum average V. | Unit 2 Pure Mathematics for listed senior maths requirements. CSEC Mathematics is accepted for BA Psychology and Bachelor of Kinesiology. Applicants without Unit 2 have limited Arts routes. | CSEC English or CAPE Unit 2 English for senior English. Check proficiency separately. | Current page checked October 18; minimum V is the published wording. |
| Memorial University of Newfoundland | Winter 2027 and beyond: CSEC average 2 in required areas, plus two two-unit CAPE subjects with average 3. | Required areas: English, Mathematics, laboratory science, Social Studies or a modern/classical language, and an elective. Competitive degrees can add conditions. | Further proficiency proof normally isn't required after CSEC and CAPE; the postsecondary route has a separate English check. | Explicit Winter 2027 and later rule applies to Fall 2027. |
| McGill University | Reviews CSEC, CAPE Unit 1, predicted or final Unit 2 and school results under its advanced-level route. No separate numeric CAPE admission cutoff is printed. | General framework: three advanced-level subjects or equivalent, or two A levels plus two AS across three subjects. Engineering names at least two of Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics at advanced level. Confirm CAPE mapping. | At least four years living and attending school in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language can meet the stated exemption. | Current admission framework; Fall 2027 credit confirmation pending. |
| University of Waterloo | Selected high-school CAPE result: five subjects, at least two at Unit 2. Biomedical Engineering recommends mostly 1s; required course minima are 2. | Biomedical Engineering: Unit 2 Pure Mathematics and Physics; Chemistry and English at CSEC, CAPE recommended; another Unit 1 or 2 academic course. Admission Information Form (AIF) and online interview required. | This selected result requires a test if your four most recent full-time school years weren't in an English-language school system. | Verified selected Biomedical Engineering high-school result, not every degree. |
| Carleton University | Current international admission selector: at least five CSEC subjects plus either two two-unit CAPE subjects or four one-unit CAPE subjects. | Prerequisites must normally be at CAPE level, with program-specific exceptions. Use the selector for your exact program; the live 2027 viewbook no longer prints a CAPE table. | The viewbook describes a three-year English-schooling exemption with country and instruction conditions; confirm your record. | Current selector result for Caribbean CAPE applicants; program rules can add conditions. |
Each row gives a published CAPE rule or an explicit CXC assessment route. Carleton's rule comes from its current international admission selector, not its 2027 viewbook, which no longer prints a CAPE table. A search result can still show an older table, so use the selector result for your exact program.
UBC's international requirements selector needs your campus, country and degree. The checked page showed the selector, without a selected CAPE result. Its exact unit count and grade rule are pending here. A readable landing page isn't evidence that a particular course combination is accepted.
Keep a copy of the rule you use. Write down the degree, source date and full subject names beside your results. If the university changes its wording while you're applying, you can ask which version applies to your file. Your offer and applicant portal will also set conditions that a broad curriculum page can't resolve.
Count subjects, units and awards correctly
Don't treat every reference to a course as the same thing.
CAPE is the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination. CSEC is the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate. The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) awards certificates for completed CAPE units. Its diploma requires at least six units, including Caribbean Studies. Its associate degree requires a prescribed ten-unit group, including Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies. CXC allows up to five years to complete the required group for those awards. The CXC qualification page explains the award structure.
A university can ask for six units without asking for the full diploma. Another can require the diploma itself. A third can count advanced subjects alongside CSEC results. Copy the institution's wording into your plan. Don't replace six units with six subjects, or assume that two unrelated Unit 1 courses always count as one two-unit subject.
Laurier makes that distinction useful. It permits two Unit 1 courses to replace one Unit 2 course for the general count. The exception is a specifically required Unit 2 prerequisite. That means the substitution doesn't let you replace required Unit 2 Pure Mathematics with two unrelated first units. Its options without Unit 2 are limited to the Arts routes named on its page.
If you haven't taken CAPE, compare the CSEC-only routes. Memorial names CSEC plus at least one year at a recognized college or university as an alternative. You must then apply as a transfer student. That route still has admission and English conditions. It isn't a promise that any college year will lead to any Canadian degree.
The Bahamas' BGCSE is a different credential. Don't apply a CSEC or CAPE rule to it because the school is in the Caribbean. Use the Bahamas admissions guide. If you complete an Ontario high school diploma, A levels or another curriculum instead, follow that credential's route and disclose your full school record.
Grade rules aren't one Canadian conversion
Keep the university's own grade scale beside its own requirements.
CXC reports overall CAPE grades with Roman numerals and module results with letters. Those are different results. Its grade descriptors explain the distinction; they don't create a universal CAPE-to-percentage scale. Don't turn a module letter into an overall exam grade to meet a university threshold.
Manitoba publishes its own equivalents within each degree table. University 1 uses a different standard from Engineering. The same page gives still other program conditions. Those local percentages tell you how Manitoba describes its rules. They don't establish what a Grade III means at Toronto, McMaster or another university.
Queen's publishes II or B as its competitive average. Its Commerce row separately prints a minimum Mathematics and Communication Studies grade of A. That letter wording needs clarification for a CAPE record. Ask Queen's what result it expects; don't silently translate it into an overall Roman-numeral grade. The mandatory Commerce supplement is a separate requirement.
McMaster's current CAPE section gives the subject count and prerequisite equivalents. It doesn't print the old general grade-floor claim found in some summaries. The grades needed for your program remain a separate check. A missing general number doesn't mean that any passing grade will qualify you for Engineering or another competitive degree.
Match CAPE subjects to the exact degree
Choose your degree before deciding which Unit 2 subjects to take.
McMaster maps both units of Pure Mathematics to Ontario Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Unit 1 Pure Mathematics alone covers Pre-Calculus. Both units of Applied Mathematics map to Statistics instead. A mathematics course can count toward the overall credential and still fail to meet a Calculus prerequisite. Read the subject map before dropping a second unit.
Waterloo now has a readable Biomedical Engineering CAPE result. It specifies the advanced Mathematics and Physics courses. It also names the level for Chemistry and English. Use that selected high-school result for Biomedical Engineering. Don't take a college-transfer page, or a document checklist, as the entrance requirement for a school-leaver.
Your choice of degree can add tasks beyond grades. Waterloo's selected Engineering result requires the AIF and an online interview. Queen's lists supplements for some programs. Check the university portal after applying so you can see the required forms and dates. Submitting the main application doesn't complete those later steps.
McGill explicitly reviews CSEC and CAPE records under its advanced-level framework. That framework also lists A-level subject groups and typical grade ranges. It doesn't print a direct CAPE conversion for every range. Ask how your CAPE subjects meet the chosen degree's requirements instead of treating an A-level letter range as a confirmed CAPE cutoff.
CAPE transfer credit by university
Admission eligibility and degree credit have separate rules.
CAPE transfer credit by university comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| University | Published credit scope and limits | Official credit rule |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto | Up to 3.0 full credits, final I or II, at Arts & Science, Daniels, Mississauga and Scarborough. Assessed after offer acceptance; final results direct from CXC. | Check the policy |
| Queen's University | General high-school credit policy has an 18.0-unit ceiling. It doesn't establish a CAPE-specific grade or course entitlement; request confirmation for your faculty. | Check the policy |
| York University | CAPE diploma: up to 18 credits. Most two-unit academic subjects with grades 1, 2 or 3 qualify; two separate one-unit courses can't be combined for credit. | Check the policy |
| University of Manitoba | The entrance table doesn't establish a CAPE credit ceiling or grade rule. Ask for the course assessment before planning a shorter degree. | Check the policy |
| McMaster University | Unit 1 and Unit 2 courses with final II or better may be considered. The faculty decides; no universal credit maximum is printed in this section. | Check the policy |
| Wilfrid Laurier University | Unit 2 grade III or better: up to six courses, depending on program. Final official or provisional certifying statements must come directly from CXC; predicted grades don't earn credit. | Check the policy |
| Memorial University of Newfoundland | Accepted applicants may receive course-based CAPE credit. The curriculum page doesn't state one grade threshold or maximum for every degree. | Check the policy |
| McGill University | Current credit page: CAPE III or better; BCom Mathematics II or better. Up to 30 credits, faculty and subject dependent. The page still labels its cycle Fall 2026. | Check the policy |
| University of Waterloo | Normally Unit 1 or 2 at grade 2 or better. Engineering grants no first-year CAPE exemptions, including electives. Other faculty ceilings differ; see the credit comparison below. | Check the policy |
| Carleton University | The selector says two-unit CAPE courses completed with grades I to III in each unit may receive transfer credit, subject to assessment. The general credit page gives no CAPE ceiling. | Check the policy |
Waterloo shows why a headline maximum can mislead. Arts normally considers up to 4.0 Waterloo units, with lower limits for some degrees. Mathematics allows up to 1.5 units, equal to three term courses. Science allows up to 2.0 units. Engineering gives no first-year CAPE course exemptions, including academic electives. Architecture has a separate elective limit of 0.5 units.
The credit unit itself also differs between universities. U of T's 3.0 full credits aren't the same measure as York's 18 credits or Waterloo's 1.5 units. Compare the courses those amounts replace. Ask whether the credit meets a major requirement or only an elective. A large credit total might leave your required first-year timetable largely unchanged.
Final results control the assessment. U of T assesses after you accept an offer and requires results directly from CXC. Laurier doesn't award credit from predicted or unofficial results. Keep your first-year course plan open until the faculty confirms the assessment. Check before repeating an exempted course, since doing so can affect the credit you receive.
Predicted results and the CXC transcript order
Use your portal's checklist to decide what to send and when.
Waterloo's document list requests the CSEC award, previous CAPE Unit 1 or Unit 2 results, and predicted grades as available. Unofficial uploads can support review. Final offer conditions require official records from the school or examining authority, as directed. A screenshot you upload doesn't become an official CXC delivery.
Memorial similarly permits uploaded CSEC results and interim or predicted CAPE grades for early acceptance. Verified acceptance needs official CSEC and CAPE records sent directly from CXC. Laurier also requires direct CXC results to clear conditions. These examples show why a school-issued prediction can start a review but can't always finish it.
For a transcript order, first copy the university's recipient details and deadline. Gather your exam sittings and candidate information. Use the CXC transcript service guidance to place the request, then keep the receipt. Check the university portal after delivery. An order receipt proves that you requested a record; it doesn't prove that admissions matched it to your file.
CXC staff currently list US$17.50 per sitting and three weeks to process. Courier charges are US$70 overseas or US$15 within Barbados. The FAQ says transcripts must be couriered, while official support guidance permits email delivery to institutions and explains removing the courier charge. Confirm the accepted delivery route and checkout total before paying. Allow extra time for delivery and university processing.
You normally start with the university's own undergraduate document instructions. Don't buy a WES report simply because you're applying from abroad. Use the credential evaluation guide if a checklist specifically asks for an assessment. Disclose prior postsecondary study even when you hope to enter first year or receive no credit for it.
English evidence and Fall 2027 dates
An English prerequisite and language proficiency are separate checks.
U of T requires academic English at CSEC or CAPE level. Its proficiency page separately accepts final CSEC English I or II. Memorial normally needs no further proficiency proof after CSEC and CAPE. Neither policy creates a waiver at every university. School location, years of study and the actual course result can all affect the decision.
McGill's stated exemption involves at least four years living and attending school in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language. Waterloo's selected result asks about the four most recent years of full-time study in an English-language school system. Those conditions aren't identical. Check the wording that applies to your record before deciding you can skip a test.
For Ontario applications, the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) gives Group B no common deadline. January 15, 2027 is the Group A application deadline. Your current schooling determines your group. Track the chosen university's application date, then the document and supplement dates. Use the Ontario deadline guide to plan; a scholarship can close much earlier.
Scholarships and the cost of the degree
Check the live award cycle before putting it in your budget.
UBC International Scholars is open for September 2027. It requires strong academics and significant financial need, plus nomination and other eligibility conditions. Submit UBC admission before starting the award form. Both applications are due November 15, 2026. Required admission documents and English evidence are due January 31, 2027. Read the current award conditions for degree exclusions and nomination details.
Pearson's earlier steps have closed. For September 2027 entry, school nomination was due October 9, 2026 and the admission application October 16. Both dates have passed as of this review. November 6, 2026 remains the scholarship-form deadline for eligible nominees who met the earlier steps. The current Pearson page shouldn't be read as a new opportunity to start every step today.
Carleton's live viewbook now publishes tuition for 2027-2028 and 2028-2029. Its listed annual tuition includes CAN$39,000 for BA and BSc, CAN$45,000 for BCom, and CAN$55,000 for BCS and BEng. Estimated miscellaneous fees are separate. These examples aren't a national average or a lowest-cost ranking. Housing and travel must also fit your family budget.
Compare each offer using the degree's own fee schedule. Check the course load and whether the quoted year matches your entry year. Count a competitive award as possible funding until you receive an award letter. The Carleton fee guide separates cost categories. Check the Carleton university guide alongside the scholarship guide when you build the full cost plan.
Study permit, funds and PAL or TAL
University admission and permission to study are separate decisions.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has a document checklist for study permits. It requires an acceptance letter and financial evidence. Most undergraduates also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL or TAL), unless exempt. Your school explains its process. Quebec uses a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ). The PAL and TAL page checked here doesn't confirm 2027 expiry dates. Don't extend the published 2026 validity rule by assumption.
For applications from September 1, 2026, IRCC's living-expense minimum is CAN$23,448 for one person outside Quebec, plus tuition and transportation. Larger families need more. Amounts change yearly, so check again at submission in 2027. Show how you'll fund the full degree, without relying on work in Canada. Explain the source of funds, not only the balance.
A guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) is one acceptable financial document. It isn't mandatory for every Caribbean applicant. Canada ended the Student Direct Stream on November 8, 2024. Use the regular study-permit process and the checklist for your circumstances. An old Student Direct Stream article or a fixed GIC figure can't replace the current requirements.
Choose your country and program guide
Use the curriculum comparison above alongside the details for your home system.
The Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Guyana guides cover country-specific choices. The Eastern Caribbean guide covers the named island systems. Barbados also compares finishing CAPE with an Ontario Grade 12 route. Keep BGCSE questions with the separate Bahamas guide.
For degree choices, compare Engineering, Computer Science or Business and Commerce. Use the McMaster Engineering and Waterloo Engineering guides for their program details. The university's current offer conditions remain the final checklist for your own application.
