Identify required WIL
Medicine Hat College defines WIL as curricular experiential education connecting academic study with a workplace or practice setting through a student, host and institution partnership. Its current list identifies programs where WIL is a required graduation element, including Information Technology, Kinesiology, Nursing, Practical Nurse, Social Work and several business and community credentials. Inspect a practicum example
Kinesiology provides a concrete boundary. Its practicum is unpaid and begins only after satisfactory completion of all courses and requirements from the first three semesters. A placement may require a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, and First Aid plus CPR-C is required; the student pays associated fees. Those conditions affect schedule and budget, but they do not describe every MHC placement or imply that every WIL experience is unpaid.
Prepare international documentation
As of April 1, 2026, IRCC says eligible post-secondary international students do not need a separate co-op work permit for a required student work placement. Eligibility includes full-time study at a post-secondary DLI, a valid study permit with the required work condition, a DLI letter confirming the required placement, and placements totalling no more than 50% of the program. MHC tells affected applicants to upload its co-op support letter with the study-permit application. Some public-health placements require an immigration medical exam. The same IRCC page retains older lower-page instructions referring to co-op permits, so students should use its dated April 2026 change notice and current eligibility section and seek IRCC guidance if their documents conflict.
Keep outcomes separate
Career preparation and outcomes should remain separate from placement requirements. Keep evidence of courses, WIL objectives and completed hours, and ask the relevant employer, regulator or receiving institution to assess the next step it controls.
