The OUAC System Deep Dive

The OUAC System Deep Dive

The Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) is your gateway to all 21 Ontario universities. Understanding this system is essential for a smooth application process.

What is OUAC?

OUAC is a not-for-profit, centralized application service that has been processing applications for Ontario universities since 1971. Instead of applying to each university separately, you submit one application through OUAC, which then transmits your information to your chosen universities.

Which Application Type Do You Need?

OUAC uses a "smart application" system that determines your applicant group based on your profile:

Group A (101 Application)

You are a Group A applicant if ALL of the following are true:

  • You are currently enrolled in an Ontario high school
  • You are under 21 on December 31 of the application year
  • You have (or are working toward) an OSSD with six 4U/M courses

Group B (105 Application)

You are a Group B applicant if you don't meet Group A criteria:

  • 105D: Canadian citizens/permanent residents not currently in Ontario high school
  • 105F: International students (citizens of countries other than Canada)

OUAC 101: Ontario High School Students

How It Works

  1. Your Ontario high school provides you with a PIN code
  2. Use the PIN to create your OUAC account
  3. Your Ontario Education Number (OEN) links to your transcript
  4. Grades are automatically sent by your school
  5. You apply to programs (up to 3 initially)

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Get Your PIN

  • Your guidance counselor provides your PIN
  • Typically distributed in October/November
  • Keep it safe - you'll need it to access your application

Step 2: Create Your Account

  • Go to ouac.on.ca
  • Click "Apply to Undergraduate Studies"
  • Enter your PIN and personal information
  • Create login credentials

Step 3: Complete Your Profile

  • Personal information (address, citizenship)
  • Educational background
  • Indigenous ancestry (optional)
  • Accessibility needs (optional)

Step 4: Select Programs

  • Search by university, program, or keyword
  • Add up to 3 programs initially (more available for additional fee)
  • Order matters for some universities

Step 5: Pay and Submit

  • Base fee covers 3 programs (~$150)
  • Additional programs ~$50 each
  • Payment by credit card or online banking

Who Uses 105D?

  • Students currently in high school outside Ontario
  • Canadian citizens/permanent residents returning from abroad
  • Postsecondary transfer students
  • Mature students with Canadian status

Key Differences from 101

  1. No PIN required - Create account directly
  2. Transcripts - You must arrange to send transcripts
  3. More documentation - May need to provide more supporting documents
  4. Credential evaluation - Some may need WES evaluation

Application Steps

  1. Create OUAC account at ouac.on.ca
  2. Complete application form
  3. Select programs (same as 101)
  4. Pay application fee
  5. Request transcripts from your schools
  6. Complete university-specific requirements

OUAC 105F: International Students

Who Uses 105F?

  • Students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Students studying at international high schools
  • Students with foreign credentials

Additional Requirements

  1. Credential evaluation - May need WES or similar
  2. English proficiency - IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent
  3. Study permit - Required after acceptance
  4. Financial documentation - Proof of funds

Key Considerations

  • Apply early (processing takes longer)
  • Check specific requirements for your home country
  • Some programs have earlier deadlines for international students
  • Additional fees may apply

Understanding Your OUAC Reference Number

After submitting, you receive a unique OUAC Reference Number. Keep this safe - you'll need it for:

  • Logging into OUAC
  • Communicating with universities
  • Sending additional documents
  • Tracking your application status

Application Fees

ItemCost (approximate)
Base fee (3 programs)$150
Each additional program$50
International application feeMay be higher
Fee Waivers: If you have financial hardship, contact your guidance counselor (101) or the universities directly (105) about fee waivers.

After You Submit

What Happens Next

  1. Acknowledgment - Universities confirm receipt
  2. Portal Access - You gain access to each university's applicant portal
  3. Document Requests - Universities may request additional documents
  4. Grade Updates - Your school sends interim and final grades
  5. Admission Decisions - Decisions released January through May

Tracking Your Application

  • Log into each university portal regularly
  • Check for missing documents
  • Monitor your email (including spam)
  • Note response deadlines

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Wrong applicant group - Using 101 when you should use 105 (or vice versa)
  2. Missing deadlines - Mark ALL deadlines in your calendar
  3. Incomplete applications - Check every university portal
  4. Wrong program codes - Double-check program selections
  5. Payment issues - Ensure payment goes through
  6. Not checking email - Universities communicate via email

Tips for Success

  1. Apply early - Don't wait until the deadline
  2. Keep records - Screenshot everything
  3. Check portals regularly - At least weekly
  4. Use correct program codes - Verify before submitting
  5. Ask questions - Contact OUAC or universities if unsure
